HTC EVO 4G :: Texting Plugged In / Not?
Nov 28, 2010
When I text "unplugged" (power cord) the touch screen is normal, responsive, and usable. When I text "plugged" in, the screen acts like there is a "force field" on top of it, in other words I have to put more pressure on the screen to be able to use the on screen keyboard. Haven't noticed it on surfing or doing other things, just the on screen keyboard. It just started recently and just seems weird. I have the HTC EVO, pretty much standard, normal updates, etc. Haven't updated anything in a couple of weeks, but this just started. Not a show stopper but a little annoying is all.

Is it bad to use your phone while plugged in (web browsing, music, tv)? I know it will take longer to charge, but is it bad for the battery or phone? Also, anyone else notice that it takes longer to charge after 2.2?

Has anyone else noticed this? I got my wife an ALLY, she loves it. When I went to charge it, I powered it down and and when I plugged it in, the phone took it upon itself to start back up. Not a real issue, but I find it a bit odd.

I've been keeping the phone plugged into the wall charger all night when I sleep, and by the time I hit lunch hour the battery is nearly dead. I've had it hooked up to my USB port for nearly 8 hours and the battery is still only 10%, and as i post this thread i got a message "Battery is low. the charging current is not enough for device power consumption. please switch to AC power" I nly have a USB cable here at the office. is this low current USB the cause of poor charging? the phone is getting very warm too.

It still says 'charge only' and not 'disk drive', yet when I plug it in I can still open the folder for Evo to view contents and on the phone itself, the SD card is unavailable.
I don't know what exactly I did to cause this. Its especially strange since it says charge only on the phone. Are there any common setting or app culprits for this?

I have my evo plugged into my computer via USB and I never got the screen asking what I wanted to do, i.e. use as disk drive, just charge, etc. I tried unplugging and plugging back it, still nothing. Also nothing in the notification bar. I've tried 2 different plugs and same thing happens. It's not showing up on my computer either but it is charging according the the phone. I'm trying to copy some movies onto my phone and now I can't because I can't make is a disk drive.

Does it hurt the phone or battery any to leave the phone plugged in while fully charged and using it? I have been watching a lot of Netflix lately and have been leaving it plugged in when watching even when it is fully charged.

My 2.2 DINC with lastest OTA (been over a couple of weeks) while plugged in as usual overnight, announced "DROID". I looked over and the phone had obviously rebooted itself. This is the only time this has happened to my DINC. I don't find anything out of the ordinary on the phone. Any clues why it would reboot itself without being asked?

I was able to root my phone with this method when everything else failed. Try this if you have had trouble with other methods. I did not discover this, I heard it from someone on IRC (forgot who).
1. With your phone booted up and plugged in via USB, type adb reboot recovery.
2. Start your adb shell loop (using the while loop or bat file).
3. Click in and out your SD card repeatedly while the phone is booting into recovery (apparently every 0.5 sec will do).
4. Watch for "- exec '/system/bin/sh' failed: No such file or directory (2) -" to appear in your terminal
5. Follow the rest of the instructions at public:adb_in_recovery [RootWiki]

Has anyone had this problem on their Evo? It seems to work if the phone is off the charger but when I charge it overnight and have it set to wake me up in the morning it doesn't go off. And I have downloaded a new alarm app and tested it off the charger and on it and it as well only works when the phone is off the charger.

Yesterday I exchanged my Eris for a new one because the screen brightness on my old one was too dim. Now I notice that when I plug in the phone to charge, the phone stays awake. On my first phone it would just go to sleep when charging so my awake time was usually around 15-20%. When I took my new phone off the charger this morning it was up to 58% . My gf's Eris also sleeps when being charged so I'm thinking mine is the exception now. I'm thinking of calling Verizon tech support later but wanted to see if this happens to anyone else here.

I can't seem to find in the settings anywhere how to do this: I want to keep the display on whenever I am plugged in and getting power via USB on the Galaxy S. It is especially important since I have to type in a password each time to access the screen due to my work email security requirements (it's almost not worth it).

I've heard that today's batteries' health depends on how many cycles they have gone through, and considering this it should be wise to leave the phone plugged in while fully charged and under heavy use. This way you will delay the cycle and get a "healthier" battery. This was just MY theory and I was not too sure about it. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I've made a nice little dock while I'm at work for keeping my phone upright and flat against a board while plugged in at my desk. This enables me to answer texts by just reaching over and tapping out my reply instead of taking the phone into my hand. What I'm after is an option, app, widget, Anything that will allow my phone to stay on while it's plugged in (sort of like a mini laptop). Right now it goes black after a minute, as it would do if it was on battery.
The only option I can find in the settings is when to turn off the display, which only offers a maximum of 30 minutes and doesn't take into consideration whether you're on battery or charging. It would be preferable if this option existed only while on charge, as I don't want my phone on all the time while on battery, obviously. For what it's worth, my Desire is running 2.2 with the Cyanogenmod 6.0.2 ROM.

I own an EVO - when I connect it to my Dell Vostro laptop it charges without any problems whatsoever. When I attempt to charge it from my work laptop (Dell Latitude) it never charges. I am not changing any settings, just simply unplugging it from the Vostro and then plugging it into the Latitude.

I've had my Eris for almost a year now. Like most of you, it was great until the upgrade to 2.1. Since then, I've been disappointed but it's been managable. However recently, it's gotten worse. I too am experiencing the autoscrolling issue when my phone is plugged in. I really don't have the time to go and haggle in a Verizon store about it, so I've just been dealing with it and not trying to do anything while my phone is plugged in.
Now, it's autoscrolling even when it's NOT plugged in. Half the time I can't type because it scrolls back, and I end up typing things backwards. I can't open apps because it automatically will select things or scroll to the farthest left screen. What gives?
Also, my texting has been freezing and force closing a lot lately. I will repeatedly close and reopen Messaging, but I still cannot send a text. I've also had a problem with other people not receiving texts that my phone says have been sent.
I also recently got a message that my phone internal storage is reaching capacity. I don't have many apps installed, but I went though and cleaned up anyway. I'm guessing one culprit is my texts, because I've deleted very few of any texts I've sent for the life of the phone. I have tried going in and deleting one thread (the largest one, I figured it would be the quickest fix: it's over 2,000 messages), but it just causes my phone to freeze and won't delete it.

Anyone know of a way to set up an alarm clock that will be enabled only when my MT slide is plugged in? I often get up before my alarm, and it would be nice if the alarm was disabled when I unplug and re-enabled when I plug back in before bed.
