Has anyone found an easy, reliable way to reposition the cursor so that you can modify text you've already written? The only suggestion I was given was to "swipe" the cursor over to where I wanted it, which turns into a series of moves that have the cursor jumping all over the place. Are there no equivalents to the "cursor arrows" that let you move the cursor up, right & left?
Does anyone have a better way?

I'm trying to develop an RPG for Android, so I need to paint a scenario where I'll move my character.
My idea is to do it 2D. I've developed 3D games and Java games for desktop, but in Android i don't get how to star the scenario.
Could it be developed with a matrix of information, so I could know where my character steps?

I'd like to have the statusbar at the bottom of the screen like this:
Is this possible by editing some xml stuff in the systemUI.apk or framework-res.apk? I am using the stock rom and dont want to flash a custom rom.
This is just the tablet mode. But I dont want the tablet mode, I just want the phone mode with the statusbar at the bottom.

There is obviously a mechanism for selecting, cutting, pasting, and generally editing text in text fields. Little pointer widgets appear under text from time to time. In general, I can't figure out how to use them. Furthermore, on a Kindle screen (which is bigger than a smartphone screen) I can't touch or drag them accurately--they're too small, the drags required are too small, and there isn't any automatic magnifier like there is on my iPod Touch.
What I find particularly frustrating is that I can't find an easy way to move the insertion point back and forth one character at a time, the way I would with cursor keys, and I can't find any easy way to delete the character just ahead of the cursor.
Is there some kind of how-to guide that spells out just how to do text editing within text fields on a touchscreen Android device?

Am I missing something or is there not a character counter for when you are composing text messages on the standard Desire text message app? If there isn't one - is there a recommended alternative solution?

In Android if I have an edit text and the user entered 123456789012, how could I get the program to insert a dash every 4th character. ie: 1234-5678-9012? I guess you need to say something along the lines of:- a=Characters 1~4, b=Characters 5~8, c=Characters 9-12,

Would it be (easily) possible (for a dev, so not me) to add undo/redo buttons to text editing? This is a HUGE feature missing in Android, soon 2013, five years of android, and still not there...

I am switching from a BB. I receive text messages from my office with client's phone numbers. We prefer to keep our mobile numbers private, so we need to block our caller id on a per call basis. It wouldn't work for us to block caller id on all calls. On my BB, I would copy and paste the number and then add *67 as a prefix.
On the Hero I can't find a way to edit the phone number from the text message. I can delete it, but can't add to it. Most of these numbers I would not want to add to my address book. I had my office text the number with *67 as a prefix, but the Hero doesn't recognize the *. It just copies the digits. What workaround options do I have?

Just noticed that there doesn't appear to be any kind of optical trackpad on it. How will you be able to do things like move a cursor through text? Are they just relying on the bigger screen to enable more accurate touching?

I only just discovered this after owning the phone since January - but you can move the text autocorrect bar up and down by press-hold a la moving widgets on home screens! To many of you this is old news, but to many others this is kickass. This is great since I was always miffed that the default location of the text-correct bar always overlayed the text I was entering.

I want to cause the focus of one edit text box to move to another on editting (meaning you can only type on letter before it automatically moves on to the next edit text).
It's the "on edit" that I can't get my head around. Theres a lot I need to implement it into, so just a basic understanding should set the ball rolling.

Can you use the optical trackpad to move the cursor when writing text? So if you realise you've gone wrong you don't have to place your finger in-between two letters. On my existing very old touch scree phone this is a big issue as i can never get the cursor exactly where i want Another trackpad question - what purpose does it have when browsing, does it highlight links allowing quick navigation without using the pinch and zoom?
Final track pad question- do you use it? The battery- with moderate to heavy use will it ALWAYS last a long day 7-11 for example? Hows the froyo update, is sense still as smooth as ever?

I use the hardware keyboard exclusively, but am wanting to use the software keyboard more, figuring that my next phone may only have that. My real problem is figuring out how to move the cursor around in the text. If I want to go back and edit using the hardware keyboard, I just use the d-pad to move back to the spot I need. How do I do that with the software keyboard? Am I forced to tap the screen (which never chooses where I want it, and I have to key pecking at it to get it in the right place)?

I can't see any arrow keys on the keyboard to move the cursor around in a text entry box. So, when I want to correct a typing mistake I have to stab my finger somewhere to the right of the error then backspace over the error (usually deleting a few correct characters in the process) before retyping. There must be a better way.

Sorry for the newb question. Of course you can tap in the right spot, but that is not very accurate. The d-pad on the hard keyboard works of course, but what about on the soft keyboard?

I come from the iphone scene and bought an evo. i got the emulators and while playing it i noticed that sometime it starts acting up and my character moves by itself when i hold 2 buttons together then let go of 1. is this just the way the touchscreen was designed? i know the iphone had some kind of multi touch they pattented so it took a while for other phones to come out with pinch ability on their touchscreens. iphone works perfectly for being on-screen buttons but on this phone i seriously cant even play cause the controls are so messed up. sometimes my character is like crouching repeadedly or running right , does anyone else have this problem or is it just my phone? specifically while playing snes emulator since there isnt many other apps that use more than 1 button at a time.
