Android :: How To Use Three Unicode Values In Android In Text Editing Area?
Oct 12, 2010
I am trying to display two Hindi characters in the text editing area. These characters are a combination of three unicode characters. For example: In order to display number 9, I use HTE following in the XML file:
<Key android:codes="57" android:keyLabel="9"/>
One character is a combination of three unicodes --> 0915 094D 0937 How should the XML file be modified in order to display the above two hindi characters ? How can I use three unicode values in android: codes in the text editing area?

I'm fetching some data from my web API that returns XML with content which includes escaped unicode characters. So there is content such as "Izložba" which I need to display in a TextView as word "Izložba". How can I do this? Right now these characters are either omitted or displayed as that raw escaped value.

There is obviously a mechanism for selecting, cutting, pasting, and generally editing text in text fields. Little pointer widgets appear under text from time to time. In general, I can't figure out how to use them. Furthermore, on a Kindle screen (which is bigger than a smartphone screen) I can't touch or drag them accurately--they're too small, the drags required are too small, and there isn't any automatic magnifier like there is on my iPod Touch.
What I find particularly frustrating is that I can't find an easy way to move the insertion point back and forth one character at a time, the way I would with cursor keys, and I can't find any easy way to delete the character just ahead of the cursor.
Is there some kind of how-to guide that spells out just how to do text editing within text fields on a touchscreen Android device?

Ocassionaly, when responding to a text, the area you type in for me that says "Tap to compose" is greyed out and when I type, nothing happens. Usually requires a reboot. Anyone have any idea why it would be doing this or how to fix it? I love my phone, but the reboots take forever.

I get a poor signal at home (did on my Nokia), so half the time when I send a text, there won't be a signal to send it. I always then go and put my phone in a place where there is a signal and leave it..
With my Nokias, the phone would send it fairly quickly (usually within 10-15 minutes).
The message is still sat in Handcent with the whirling round icon next to it. If I copy the message, and resend it, whilst there's a signal, away it goes. I can't find any way to force the send when I want, and I left the resend in a signal area for 1hr 15 mins and it still hadn't sent..

I have encountered a problem with focused text fields in a WebView not showing entered text values.As long as a WebView text field has focus it will not show text or even the blinking cursor.You can select and highlight the text or unfocus the field to see it, but when it gains focus it will not show the text as if the foreground color of the text is white.The simplest code to demonstrate this is below.With the setTheme using a Light background, try typing values into the Email text field to notice that the text is not visible when the field is focused.

I'm writing an Android application that allows a user to maintain a list of products. In the EnterProductData activity, the user can enter information about the product into form fields, which will then save the info to a SQLite DB. The EnterProductData activity also allows the user to initiate a barcode scan via the Barcode Scanner app in order to capture the UPC code. The problem I'm facing is trying to set the value of the UPC text field in onActivityResult() once the barcode scan activity is complete and returns the value.
What is ending up happening is my onResume() method is calling a function (populateFields()) that sets the values of the text fields to whatever is currently saved in the DB. And this seems to be happening after onActivityResult() is called. This means the scanned UPC is set as the text field value, only for an empty value to be set to it immediately after. The line of code to blame is commented with asterisks next to it. I imagine that if I immediately save the scanned UPC to the DB in the onActivityResult() method, I can avoid this problem, but that doesn't seem to be the best practice, in my opinion. Can someone advise me on what I should do?
EnterProductData.java
public class EnterProductData extends Activity {
private Button mScanButton;
private EditText mUPC;
private Button mSaveButton;
private Long mRowId;
private DbAdapter mDbHelper;
@Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
mDbHelper = new DbAdapter(this);
mDbHelper.open();
setContentView(R.layout.enter_product_data);
mUPC = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.UPC);
mScanButton = (Button) findViewById(R.id.scanButton);
mSaveButton = (Button) findViewById(R.id.saveButton);
mRowId = (savedInstanceState == null) ? null :
(Long) savedInstanceState.getSerializable(DbAdapter.KEY_PRODUCT_ROWID);
if (mRowId == null) {
Bundle extras = getIntent().getExtras();
mRowId = extras != null ? extras.getLong(DbAdapter.KEY_PRODUCT_ROWID): null;}
populateFields();
mScanButton.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
public void onClick(View view) {
IntentIntegrator.initiateScan(EnterProductData.this);}});
mSaveButton.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
public void onClick(View view) {
setResult(RESULT_OK);
finish();}});
}private void populateFields() {
if (mRowId != null) {
Cursor product = mDbHelper.fetchProduct(mRowId);
startManagingCursor(product);
mUPC.setText(product.getString(
product.getColumnIndexOrThrow(DbAdapter.KEY_UPC))); //******}
}@Override
protected void onSaveInstanceState(Bundle outState) {
super.onSaveInstanceState(outState);
saveState();
outState.putSerializable(DbAdapter.KEY_PRODUCT_ROWID, mRowId);
}@Override
protected void onPause() {
super.onPause();
saveState();
}@Override
protected void onResume() {
super.onResume();
populateFields();
}private void saveState() {String upc= mUPC.getText().toString();
if (mRowId == null) {
long id = mDbHelper.createProduct(mRowId, UPC);
if (id > 0) mRowId = id;
}} else {mDbHelper.updateProduct(mRowId, UPC);
}}protected void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent data) {
switch(requestCode) {
case IntentIntegrator.REQUEST_CODE: {
if (resultCode != RESULT_CANCELED) {
IntentResult scanResult = IntentIntegrator.parseActivityResult(requestCode, resultCode, data);
if (scanResult != null) {
String upc = scanResult.getContents();
mUPC.setText(upc);
}}break;
}}}}

I need help in setting up value and display text in spinner. As per now I am populating my spinner by array adapter e.g. mySpinner.setAdapter(myAdapter);
And as far as I know after doing this the display text and the value of spinner at same position is same. The other attribute that I can get from spinner is the position on the item. Now in my case I want to make spinner like the drop down box, which we have in .NET. Which holds a text and value. Where as text is displayed and value is at back end. So if I change drop down box , I can either use its selected text or value. But its not happening in android spinner case.
For Example:
Text Value
Cat 10
Mountain 5
Stone 9
Fish 14
River 13
Loin 17
So from above array I am only displaying non-living objects text, and what I want is that when user select them I get there value i.e. like when Mountain selected I get 5. I hope this example made my question a bit more clear.

I am switching from a BB. I receive text messages from my office with client's phone numbers. We prefer to keep our mobile numbers private, so we need to block our caller id on a per call basis. It wouldn't work for us to block caller id on all calls. On my BB, I would copy and paste the number and then add *67 as a prefix.
On the Hero I can't find a way to edit the phone number from the text message. I can delete it, but can't add to it. Most of these numbers I would not want to add to my address book. I had my office text the number with *67 as a prefix, but the Hero doesn't recognize the *. It just copies the digits. What workaround options do I have?

I've been having an issue with area codes and text messaging. The contact's number is stored properly xxx-xxx-xxxx in the contacts. But when he sends a text, it only shows up as xxx-xxxx, so when I reply, of course, it won't send because Nebraska is now on mandatory 10 digit dialing. So then I have to compose a new message instead of just replying in the current thread.
I had this issue at first, but only with the numbers entered in as (xxx) xxx-xxxx. So I made sure to change every number to xxx-xxx-xxxx and it seemed to fix it for a while at least.

Has anyone found an easy, reliable way to reposition the cursor so that you can modify text you've already written? The only suggestion I was given was to "swipe" the cursor over to where I wanted it, which turns into a series of moves that have the cursor jumping all over the place. Are there no equivalents to the "cursor arrows" that let you move the cursor up, right & left?
Does anyone have a better way?

I am going crazy! Every time I try to text my wife's phone from my contacts, it removes the area code and errors out when trying to send. I have edited the contact info and sure enough it has the correct 10 digit number. I have tried deleting the her contact info and recreating it. No dice. I again deleted her contact info, went to her phone and sent a text to mine and replied. The incoming message has the correct 10 digit number. Replying again stripped the area code and tried to use the 7 digit number. Of course this failed.Any ideas? I need some help here. I am not sure if this is an issue with the phone or with AT&T.

On my sister's phone (and I've checked the contact, and reentered the number) when she receives a message from a certain number, the other number on her account and replies to it, the message seems to be sent to the 7 digit number, without area code, and so it fails. She keeps having to resend messages, as a new message, to the number typed in in full. On receiving a reply, simply responding to it results in another failure.This is samsung moment to samsung moment, only happens with the one contact, and doesn't happen on mine.

I am developing application for android phone. Currently I am testing my system in the emulator. In my application, I want to send Unicode character (Amharic language character) via SMS to the other emulator instance. But in the receiver side, the message is not viewed properly. I think the problem is some character encoding related problem. In addition similar problem happens for texts which are queried for the sqlite database. That is when I send a query result via SMS the same problem occurs.

In some cases I have messages, typically shown in a toast message, where there are three trailing periods. For instance, "bla bla bla. Please wait...". Note that this is _not_ an elipsis, as the string is not truncated. The problem is that sometimes the string is wrapped at the end of line and I get two periods in the first line, a newline, and then a single orphaned period in the next line.
I'd like to have the "..." not broken by any means. How can this be done in a reliable way? E.g. is there any Unicode single char guaranteed to be available in all Android appliances that gets rendered as three periods?

I have an assignment to be completed. The assignment needs sms texting service facility in Roslien Font (for each English alphabet we have a corresponding alphabet in Roslien, something like Wingdings) for Android platform. On going through the posts available on different forums in INTERNET, I observed that in order to send a different language text, I need to send the sms as a unicode string. The problem is, I have no clue on how to obtain the unicode string for a completely new font , Roslien. I have a " .ttf " file for the font which as such which contains the alphabets in the language.
Please help me , how do I obtain unicode string for the particular font.
