HTC EVO 4G :: Taking Evo On Vacation
Jun 17, 2010
This week I took the family to South Padre Island and here's how the Evo "fit" into our lives...
1. Google maps w/voice navigation! Even the wife was impressed! lol! Seriously, finding the hotel, restaurants and local attractions were a breeze. Sure you can do it on the iPhone, but I could sit back and listen to the directions...for free.
2. the kids are bored as hell during the 5 hour drive. Ah! Loaded up Sprint TV and streamed Spongebob...all grins! Afterwards they watched Alice in Wonderland. Peace ensues.
3. Took the kids to the beach and the 8 megapixel camera captured the moment beautifully!!
4. Arrived at the hotel no wifi. No problem, launched the wireless tether app...yumm. I was able to check email, facebook and manage a website.
5. So we're at the hotel trying to get ready and the kids are restless. I pull out my ipad, connected it to the Evo and launched Netflix. Thank God...peace and harmony.
6. So we're ready for dinner. I used the "Around Me" app and found a fantastic restaurant on the bay side....took a picture to capture the moment.
7. Today I used navigation to direct us to the USS Lexington! I used the Evo's built in camera to capture the experience...
8. We then proceeded to head back home using the Evos navigation.
Just wanted to share how the Evo integrated into our lives Sure the Evo has some build quality issues, but they will be addressed. Just hang on folks and remember why you purchased the Evo in the first place.

When it's really quiet at night and I turned off the shutter sound.Taking some pictures and I noticed that there would be slight noises at the moment it took the picture.I know it's probably nothing but I just love my EVO too much and want to make sure it's alright XDDD.I know it could be just the camera but somehow it sounds a little bit like a loosen screw?

At an event the other night that took place in a low-light restaurant, the EVO had trouble focusing and taking good pictures. It would also use way, way too much flash when put in automatic mode, and even seemed a bit much when turned down in the options.

Wondering if there was a way to carry over your personal saved scenes from stock to a new rom. It would be a nice time saver.

My problem is that i want to take a screenshot from whole display. I want to do it without human interaction, like a service, which launches the activity. I tried to do it with the getRootView and the method getDrawingCache but i didn't find the main view. Then I've tried to do it with a simply dialog box with a button (using the click event, and taking the view that it has in the attribute). This solution give me a screenshot from the activity (Dialog box only) but I have not idea how I can take a screenshot from whole display.

I have an Activity for my application to take pictures and store them with a content provider. The problem is that obviously I would like the picture to auto rotate depending if I have my phone in landscape or not and I would like to use the autofocus feature. So I'm wondering if I could just call a Camera app intent and get the URI of the picture taken. is that possible? I remind reading that it will only give me a small size picture.

Haven't downloaded a different camera app or anything, but when taking about every third or fourth photo my screen freezes up. And I mean over 20 seconds of wait time. The photo is there, but the phone isn't doing anything. I pressed menu, back, etc, and no response. Finally after pressing the top unlock button the phone wakes back up and loses the picture. My SD card is a class 6 - so shouldn't be having problems writing to it, correct?

I tried an old(er) example / tutorial to capture a picture from the camera. But "android.hardware.CameraDevice;" cannot be resolved. Has the name changed or have somebody a good tutorial for android 1.6 and the camera? If I press a button, I want to open the Camera and make a picture. After that i want to save the picture on a sdcard and go back to my activity.

I know a lot of people have been experiencing 4-5 hour time periods for charging the phone. If you want to cut that down to 2 hours or possibly less, just follow my fix steps!
1. Plug phone in
2. Turn Phone Off
3. Wait 5 seconds
4. Turn Phone On
Voila! But i still do the turning the phone off to get the full charge thing. Hope this helps you all!

Not sure if everyone is aware, but you can actually take pictures just by touching the screen on where you want to focus and holding your finger there for about a second...I find it more useful than using the optical trackpad button.

I'm considering getting a new mobile device, and this will definitely influence my decision about whether to go Android or Windows 7 (mobile).
I really like onenote because I can handwrite my notes- and so i remember them better than when I type them. I can also select my text with the lasso (or even individual strokes with a click!) and move it around, in case I don't leave enough room or something.
Anyway, I'm looking for an app for android that lets me take advantage of a stylus and take notes in multiple colors, and be able to select and move/resize my text. I'd LIKE (but could do without) to be able to sync to my desktop and add pictures or text or whatever- basically what i can do with onenote. However, I haven't found a comprehensive application for android, and I may go with the windows device, just so that I can use onenote (but the performance scares me a bit- android is really snappy!). I wouldn't mind paying for the app. <$100-150
I already checked out the web apps version of onenote, but it doesn't do handwriting.
Anyone know if an app like this exists, or is in development?

Heres a real easy way to jot down your notes while on the go. Create a new note and set yourself a reminder or search through your current notes.
New notes can be added at the top of the main screen or use your phones menu to Add a new note, Search previous notes, add a labels and establish your settings.
In Settings you can change things like the color of the notepad, font, font size, set up reminders, export and import notes to/from your SD card and more.
AK Notepad makes it easy to jot down quick thoughts, write a blog post, set-up grocery list and anything else you need to to remember.
Do you have this app? Prefer using another Android app for note taking? Let other know by leaving a comment below.
More screenshots of the AK Notepad app for Android.
You can download this app direct to your android phone. Just scan the QR code below with Barcode Scanner application from Android Market: GigaDroid.com

I did a search and didn't find anything so here goes....I installed the myspace application and it works great. I noticed the app itself was 3MB and after using it a few times the data is up to 12MB, so the entire thing is up to 15MB. Is the data like the cache on the browser, can the data be deleted, if so, how?..if not this program is too hoggy its just going to keep growing the more I use it.

I noticed that my internal space was getting low, so i decided to clear some cache and data, however, I realized that some of my apps are actually taking up more space than they're supposed to use!? For example, my NFL app is utilizing 6.78mb (should be 3.75mb), Google Maps is 7.36mb (should be 4.54mb), Facebook 3.72mb (should be 1.97mb). Again, this isn't data or cache, just the size of the app being displayed much higher (nearly twice) than it should be. It's happening for a lot of my applications. Anyone else experience this?
I'm running Aloysius v12 and have installed the zip file so all the Verizon apps are displayed in the market.

when i had my Evo, i would go to take a picture and the LED's would stay on the whole time while i took the pic and looked great.on the DX, the flash only comes on right when you actually take the picture. i find the pics arent as good on the DX, not necessarily because of the way the LED's act. but in general.is there any way to get the LED's to act like they do on the Evo? i think it may help the camera focus better at night

I'm trying to get on with doing some Android dev work. But when I start to edit files in Eclipse, javaw.exe takes up 50% of my CPU Usage and Eclipse crashes. Anyone know how to fix this problem? I've tried simple possible solutions like killing certain processes as well as doing a full restart of my laptop but still no luck.

Can you use the front facing camera on the EVO to take self portrait pictures? I don't imagine you'd be able to easily line up the rear facing camera very well without being able to see the screen at the same time.

Does anyone know the steps I'd need to take to get the video from a DVD onto my phone to watch? I want to watch some stuff on an airplane, and the phone is easier to handle than my laptop. I know how to rip the DVD to an ISO on my PC. I have used Handbrake to convert other videos to be viewable on my phone. What I don't know are the necessary intermediate steps.

Would it be legal and ok to take images/graphics from existing free apps (such as stop/start button etc) and using it in your own app that youre developing and planning to sell? I'm not good at graphic design and there are already some great pics out there. If not how do you develop/get your own buttons for apps?

Frankly, I'm fine with the video quality. It could be a lot better but I don't use my phone for anything serious. The audio quality is horrid. I pulled a video into MediaCoder to find out why. That is 12.8kbps at 8,000hz sampling rate. To put this in perspective; A low quality MP3 is 64kbps at 44.1khz (44,100hz). That is 5 times the bit rate and more than 5 times the sampling rate.
A decent quality MP3 is at the very least 128kbps. The audio that the Evo camcorder app is 1/5th the quality of a crappy MP3. This is a rather simple software fix. I'm not a programmer but I know how audio and video codecs work and I see no reason for this limitation. The phone can record excellent quality audio. Just download a recording app and try it. HTC or a third party developer needs to get on this. The reason the video is a bit jerky is that it is recorded at 10.01 FPS...
