Android :: Handwritten Note Taking App
Jul 2, 2010
I'm considering getting a new mobile device, and this will definitely influence my decision about whether to go Android or Windows 7 (mobile).
I really like onenote because I can handwrite my notes- and so i remember them better than when I type them. I can also select my text with the lasso (or even individual strokes with a click!) and move it around, in case I don't leave enough room or something.
Anyway, I'm looking for an app for android that lets me take advantage of a stylus and take notes in multiple colors, and be able to select and move/resize my text. I'd LIKE (but could do without) to be able to sync to my desktop and add pictures or text or whatever- basically what i can do with onenote. However, I haven't found a comprehensive application for android, and I may go with the windows device, just so that I can use onenote (but the performance scares me a bit- android is really snappy!). I wouldn't mind paying for the app. <$100-150
I already checked out the web apps version of onenote, but it doesn't do handwriting.
Anyone know if an app like this exists, or is in development?

Heres a real easy way to jot down your notes while on the go. Create a new note and set yourself a reminder or search through your current notes.
New notes can be added at the top of the main screen or use your phones menu to Add a new note, Search previous notes, add a labels and establish your settings.
In Settings you can change things like the color of the notepad, font, font size, set up reminders, export and import notes to/from your SD card and more.
AK Notepad makes it easy to jot down quick thoughts, write a blog post, set-up grocery list and anything else you need to to remember.
Do you have this app? Prefer using another Android app for note taking? Let other know by leaving a comment below.
More screenshots of the AK Notepad app for Android.
You can download this app direct to your android phone. Just scan the QR code below with Barcode Scanner application from Android Market: GigaDroid.com

There are many note taking apps but I am looking for one that e-mails me the note to my own gmail account as soon as the note is created.
Some note taking apps have this feature. For example, AK Notepad has a "share" button that allows you to open up gmail and e-mail the contents of the note to anyone. This is pretty much what I want but the problem with AK Notepad is that to send myself the note I need to do the following:
1. Create the note
2. Select menu
3. Select "Share"
4. Scroll to "gmail"
5. Gmail pops open - enter in contact information (in my case it would be username+notes@gmail.com)
6. Send e-mail.
I want an app that essentially skips steps 2-6. I want it so that AS SOON as a note is written it is automatically sent to my gmail as an email.

This is not meant to be specifically about particular apps for Android, but the state of note-taking & Android in general (though I suppose I do hope to get some guidance in finding just the right app), so if a Mod feels this should be in the Apps forum instead, I understand.
There are lots of note-taking apps in the Market, and I imagine we are all familiar with the most popular (NoteEverything, Ak Notepad, Springpad, Evernote, 3banana/Catch) and a search for "note" on AppBrain finds almost 3000 results.
I myself have been looking for the "holy grail" of note taking & syncing between Android and my PC, and unless I've missed something we seem to not yet have one best note "ecosystem" for Android.
To be clear, this is what I personally consider the perfect note ecosystem. Others may disagree.
1. Create and Edit text notes on the Android device. (capturing photo notes, QR codes, and voice notes are not necessary, but certainly awesome-sauce on top).
2. Arrange notes in separate "notebooks" (or folders) within the app.
3. Easily sync the notes to my PC so that they remain in their separate notebooks (folders), and so that I can edit them easily on my PC either in a different program, or a program specific to the Android app. This syncing does not need to have a step in the "cloud" (I prefer keeping things on my PC anyway) but it wouldn't hurt.
So far on my phone I've been using NoteEverything and Catch (formerly 3Banana).
NoteEverything (NE) lets me organize my notes in folders and sub-folders (notebooks) but does not sync to the cloud or a PC. NE does let you import and export, but when you export it does not export the notes in their folders, but rather one entire batch of .txt files. Then you have to copy those files to your PC (I have been using my USB cable, and MS SyncToy). I have considered using the DropBox app to keep NE notes synced to my PC, but it still requires me to export and import manually. Not the same as syncing. (For the record, I am using the FREE version of NE).
Catch/3Banana lets me sync my notes, but only to the web/cloud. There is no desktop client from Catch to sync to my PC. I want to be able to access those notes when offline (with my laptop). Also, Catch does not use folders/notebooks, but # hash tags instead (which i don't care for. Not the way my brain organizes).
The official Evernote app in the Market does NOT allow offline access to notes, and there is a whole snafu where notes created using Rich text (or other formatting) elsewhere and then synced to EN can only be appended not edited. EN does have notebooks however, and i can sync it to my desktop EN client. EN does have a new Beta that was just released through their web site that allows offline notes, but I haven't tried it yet, and it has its own problems so far (as it's still in Beta).
Springpad is more like Catch, you can sync it online, but has no desktop PC client for offline use.
GDocs is an app that will let you open and edit your Google Docs files, but when I used it it seemed kind of buggy and hard to use well.
Docs 2 Go is great if you want to pay for it (i have) but again the problem is syncing with the desktop. I suppose this could be done with DropBox. Not sure how well this satisfies my requirement of notebooks/folders, nor how "slick" an implementation this would be.
Those are the only note apps I've tried so far, so it's entirely likely I've missed one that will do what I want, but the trick seems to be getting it on to the PC.
Evernote would be the best option so far if it had offline notes on the phone. Perhaps when the new version is out of Beta that will be the best bet, however when it comes to a desktop client, while I do use EN at work (and a portable version on my USB stick) on my PC I use (and swear by, not at) MS OneNote.
MS OneNote is amazing. I wish the Evernote desktop client had the options and tools of OneNote, but it doesn't. OneNote, can sync (or import/export) with the new online version of OneNote, but there is currently no Android app for OneNote.
So there's the whole thing, and now I'd like to know what others think of the Android/PC Note-taking ecosystem. Is a unified system with all the bells and whistles possible? Does it already exist and I've missed it?
What are your methods for keeping notes synced not just with the cloud, but to your PC?

I have tried a lot of notes apps, but all of the widgets are just single icon space widgets. I would like a full screen widget for simple notes. Anyone know of a good one? This is not for taking notes at like school, but for quick reminders, etc.

I have an Activity for my application to take pictures and store them with a content provider. The problem is that obviously I would like the picture to auto rotate depending if I have my phone in landscape or not and I would like to use the autofocus feature. So I'm wondering if I could just call a Camera app intent and get the URI of the picture taken. is that possible? I remind reading that it will only give me a small size picture.

I tried an old(er) example / tutorial to capture a picture from the camera. But "android.hardware.CameraDevice;" cannot be resolved. Has the name changed or have somebody a good tutorial for android 1.6 and the camera? If I press a button, I want to open the Camera and make a picture. After that i want to save the picture on a sdcard and go back to my activity.

I did a search and didn't find anything so here goes....I installed the myspace application and it works great. I noticed the app itself was 3MB and after using it a few times the data is up to 12MB, so the entire thing is up to 15MB. Is the data like the cache on the browser, can the data be deleted, if so, how?..if not this program is too hoggy its just going to keep growing the more I use it.

I'm trying to get on with doing some Android dev work. But when I start to edit files in Eclipse, javaw.exe takes up 50% of my CPU Usage and Eclipse crashes. Anyone know how to fix this problem? I've tried simple possible solutions like killing certain processes as well as doing a full restart of my laptop but still no luck.

why a picture taking application works on some phones and not on others? The app was tested with the 1.1 emulator and the 1.0 developer phone. Some customers reported that they could not find the resulting pictures using the Picture application after they powered off the phone and powered it back on to cause a new media scan. Others find them just fine (in the dcim/camera directory). Are there any known conflicts for applications taking pictures? The only other thing I can think of is that the developer phone, currently at 1.0, will function differently at 1.1, however, the app works on the 1.1 version of the emulator.

Hi Guys! I'm coding a little app, but I don't know what I'm doing wrong. The App does the following: - Launches a Service which listens for an sms, then captures a picture with the cam and sends it to a predefined email adress. (no, i'm not trying to spy somebody out... I'm using the app to get a "3G-Webcam", sort of at least)
The problem: My App works great in the emulator, but as soon as I try it on my HTC Magic (cm6, android 2.2) it stops working.

Is there a way to use Google Voice for Android without it taking OVER the whole phones voice mail system? I want to use Google Voice as a second phone number I can give out to people I don't want to know my REAL number. Problem is, when I set it up, it takes over my phones own voice mail which I dont want it to do. I want to have my cell number go to my normal Sprint Voice mail and my GVoice number go to my GVoice voice mail account.
I still want to be notified on my phone in real time that someone is calling etc. What options do I have? How do I set this up? My friend says I can do what I'm asking but he never seems to have time to show me. I know he uses it too though.

Tried to search for this one but the search terms I used didn't seem to find worthwhile results. I'm creating an application to run on a device with a 800x480 resolution (the archos 5) so I've created an AVD in the emulator with that resolution. However, when I run my program in the emulator it simply shows the program with the default android size, centered in the 800x480 window. It is not stretched to cover the whole screen. How can I fix this? I'm using Android 2.1.

I've just added a header to my ListView and I have to change a bunch of code because the header essentially becomes position 0 (Meaning the Cursor indices of my CursorAdapter do not line up with the indicies of the list. They are off by 1 now). Why? This seems a bit silly to me.
The only reason I can come up with is that a developer may want to access the header. Fine. Provide something like getListView().getHeader().

I have an old cellphone that only is good for making calls and taking very bad pics, vids and sending slow txts. But I dont txt much if ever..I dont really care about photos or vids all I need is a phone to use for phoneing people and it would be nice to be able to check my email and get on the web alittle. I also carry a Blackberry PDA that I use alot. I would love to be able to buy an all in one PDA and phone/web serfing thing. The main things it must do is have what my PDA calls a To Do list. I can make a note there like (order 25 cases of white wine for joes restaurant) and it will record the not with the day and time I wrote it. Then laster once i have placed the order i can go back and change the not to read (ordered 25 cases white wone for joes restaurant) and it will update the time and date. Then once the order arives I can move the note to a Done box where it will let me know I have done this task and it will record when I completed it. So does anyone know of a app for Driod that does this?

For those of you that want to take screen shots and are not rooted, not as simple as that but can be done if you want to try it. FYI thanks goes to Chewedpup for researching and finding this info:

Taking screenshots on an Android-based phone by Christina Warren
Even before playing with the new Android phone, the T-Mobile G1, I knew that I would need to be able to take screenshots of the phone itself. Using a digital camera to capture screens externally just wasn't going to cut it. Because the Android platform is open (and now, open source), I really didn't expect this to be a problem. If anything, I thought there would be a way to take screenshots directly from the device like you can with the iPhone and iPod Touch. Alas, I discovered this is not the case. After scouring Google trying to find answers, I asked Engadget's Editor-in-Chief Josh Topolsky what they used for the screenshots in their review, and he was nice enough to fill me in on the details.
Warning: right now, taking screenshots from an Android device requires installing the SDK. That doesn't make it as simple as pressing a button, but it's not the end of the world. If you've got a few minutes, and a quick connection with which to download the SDK, we'll show you how to take delicious Android screenshots of your own.
Step 1: Enable USB Debugging
On your Android phone (in this case, the G1), go to Settings, then Applications, and then Development. Check the checkbox for "USB debugging."
Step 2: Download the Android SDK
Download the SDK for your platform here. Google also has some great installation documentation if you get lost. You will need to make sure you have a current copy of the JDK. To use the SDK, you also need to download an IDE like Eclipse. After installing Eclipse, you can install the Eclipse plugin to connect Android and the IDE together, or just do a lot of stuff via the command line. Go ahead and plugin your Android handset into a USB port on your computer, if it is not plugged in already.
Step 3: Run DDMS
After configuring Eclipse or whatever IDE you use to work with Android, you need to open up the DDMS application from within the "tools" folder in the Android SDK's main folder. After DDMS launches, select your handset from the menu on the left (it should be the only device listed). You might see an error message, but the debug tool should be loaded. Then, click CTRL-S on your keyboard. This will bring up the "Device Screen Capture" interface. From here, a static image is captured from what is appearing on your handset. You can save the image (nicely defaulted as PNG) and then refresh to your heart's content to grab updated or different screenshots from your phone.
That's it! There is a caveat: Because your device has to be plugged into USB to be accessed by the SDK, the SD card cannot be used for taking photographs, playing music or downloading music from the Amazon.com MP3 store. You can take pictures of some of those screens but to actually download anything, take movies, or take a photo, you cannot have your device plugged into the computer and accessed by the SDK. Again, this is hardly as simple the iPhone's screenshot interface, but it is still very doable.

Love apps so was pleased to get 2.2 and start moving stuff over to create space but noticed than when an app moves, it typically takes up a lot less space.
As an example, install alchemy today:
Space according to market = 2.08MB
Without running, app manager space reported = 2.35MB
Move to SD
Space reported = 276KB
I haven't done any kind of detailed research so I'm not sure why this is but would make a guess at the install/temp files being disposed of when they move...?? Makes sense to me, all apps still work fine but take up much less space.
