HTC EVO 4G :: Simple Root Loaded Cant Get To Recovery
Jul 21, 2010
I did the most recent OTA simple root.
I got all of that loaded. Updated. I am stuck at the red section. When I go to recovery I get the black screen with the Triangle exclamation mark.
Note: This process will only work if you already have the engineering HBOOT. (If you have NAND unlocked, you already have it and can proceed confidently.) If you'd like to check the actual version, you can boot into HBOOT and look near the top of the screen: it should say HBOOT-0.76.2000, not 0.79.0000. If you have 0.79.0000, you will need to do Toast's Part 2 first before starting here.
Download this file, rename it PC36IMG.zip, and put it on the root of your SD card however you like.PC36IMG-1.47.651.1_eng-hboot_RA-1.7.0.1.zip (md5=1ae574c403e9a2694de97706391255c0)
Power off your phone.
Hold down the Volume Down and Power buttons until the white screen appears.
HBOOT will scan the PC36IMG.zip file. You'll see a blue progress bar on the right side of the screen.
When it's finished scanning, it will ask if you want to start the update. Press the Volume Up button to answer Yes.
Wait a while for it to flash all the images.
If you get a "Fail-PU" error on the recovery image, see below.
When it finishes and asks if you want to reboot the device, press the Volume Up button to answer Yes.
After the phone has rebooted, delete the PC36IMG.zip file from your SD card.
Download this file to your SD card:su-2.1-e-unsecure-signed.zip (md5=a055c916168db7e61a75a37a13993cd6)
Power off your phone.
Hold down the Volume Down and Power buttons until the white screen appears.
If you forgot to delete PC36IMG.zip from your SD card, HBOOT will scan it again now. When it asks if you want to start the update, press Volume Down to answer No. When it asks if you want to reboot, press Volume Down again.
Now you should be at the HBOOT menu. Press Volume Down to move the selection to RECOVERY and press the Power button to select it.
In a moment, you'll be at a different looking menu.
Using the Volume and Power buttons as before, select "Flash zip from sdcard."
Select su-2.1-e-unsecure-signed.zip from the list and follow the prompts to flash it.
When that's finished and you're back at the menu, choose "Reboot system now."
You should now have root, unlocked NAND, working WiMAX, and great battery life.

Are the any disadvantages to using unrevoked to root and then their new recovery program, versus the more extensive process, like using the new "simple root" app that roots/nand/rom

I unrooted my incredible, but in Hboot today I tried to go to Recovery, and I ended up with a Red Triangle with Red ! through it (obviously an error message). Did the stock recovery not get loaded back on when I unrooted? How can I fix this? I am taking my phone in later today to be sent off for service.

I'm rooted the 2GB pny way and have the unrevoked recovery system on my phone. When verizon decides to let the ota/froyo/maintrelease (or whatever it's being called) as reported on bgr and here, what exactly do I need to do to get this as I should over the OTA?I am assuming I need to unroot (but why?) and restore the Recovery System, as well as remove any root programs from the phone.

I just can't get it.Yes, I'm new to this stuff but I've read every thread and watch hrs of youtube (which may have screwed me up more).I got my new Evo last week, I'm coming off of a jailbroken Iphone (blackrain).I'm looking for wireless tether, ROM flashing is ok but I'm not going to go crazy.I'm running 2.1 (I never upgraded, because I'd thought it be easier to root). It seems I get to the end of both rooting programs and the deal get's done.Unrevoked says- The app is loaded on my phone, however is say's something crazy when I hit start in the app I wiped the system, so I can't remember what it says, but it's like fhugh something.
Simple Root-I'm able to go through all the steps of simple root, when I hit wireless tether, it tells me.NOT ROOT? and my kernals aren't right. Also, simple root is a two click program now vs the majority of vidoes that are 3/4 clicks. This can't be that hard to do.

There have been a few different posts dealing with this concept, but I still haven't found a solid answer..which probably means there isn't one. Anyway, I am about to root and have been reading everything I can find, and there seem to be some people that do not like the unrevoked because it does not "fully" root the phone; or does not nand unlock completely or something. I wont try to explain details because I do not know much, but bottom line is:

For anyone here that has used Simpleroot, anyone had issues with Step 2? Everytime I click Unlock NAND, instead of moving into that step it does Step 1 again and tries to push the .img to the SD card. Is this a known issue?

I just downloaded a simple file and uploaded it with Astro to root my phone before I ever put a custom ROM on it. I'm just simply trying to find a root for my friends phone that doesn't involve needing to make a nandroid backup ect. like I did with my Ally. Does anyone have a simple root file that I can upload on my friend's Hero? He has the 2.1 update... also does anyone know of any custom ROM's for his phone that have the 2.2 update? If so, then I will go through the trouble to make his recovery, backup and flash the ROM (which should already have the root), but if not, then it's only worth getting a simple root.

Is there any way to query a root view of an activity for all of its child views even before the root view or its children have been inflated? I guess what I'm looking for is whether a view knows ahead of time what children it will have before it gets inflated, and can I get that list in some way. Bizarre I realize, but I think it will help me with some unconventional automation testing I'm working on. I haven't found anything in the API like this.

I am pretty sure I have root, as if I open emulator and SU It goes $ to #. I am running build "2.19.605.1 CL123435 test_keys" and everything seems stable. It's funny that I'm running 2.1 because I never flashed the ROM, I couldn't get past recovery partition set-up.
When I try to press power+up volume all I get is the yellow triangle exclamation point with the android cartoon. This is where I stopped on my first attempt. When I powered the phone back up, it's running 2.1.
Can I re-download the recovery partition .zips and re-flash the root ROM to start all over? I'm thinking my DL's of some of the recovery images may have been corrupted. I'm thinking since I have root, re-flashing the root ROM shouldn't hurt anything right?
Kinda green here, it took me a long time to realize why there a bunch of different files with the same name, but not the same contents (pmb). I'm assuming that's the only filename that the boot loader will recognize.

I cannot get SPRecovery to recognize my DROID, thus I cannot install it (I have tried every tip known to man). Can I just rename a ROM to update.zip and do it the way I updated to Froyo? Why does this or does this not work and what are the consequences?

I have recently purchased two HDC Galaxy S4 EX phones which have the MTK6589T 1.5GHz CPU and 2GB RAM/32GB ROM.I have been trying to get a CWM Recovery installed on it as well as rooting it but so far I have had no luck at all.
Firstly, I tried using MTK Droid Tools to modify a dump of my ROM and uploaded the recovery back to the phone using this procedure: URL....I did this by dumping the ROM off phone 1 (which I was avoiding starting up until I had a stock ROM backup) while I was playing around with phone 2. Phone 2 was booting into recovery mode by holding VolumeUp + Power and booting into a chinese factory mode by holding VolumeDown + Power. The recovery mode was very basic and did not have CWM.
I dumped the ROM from phone 1 with SP tools, created a modified recovery image with MTK Droid Tools and downloaded that to phone 2. I could not load either recovery mode or factory mode any more. No matter what key combination I tried the phone would just boot normally. I flashed back the unmodified recovery image and had the exact same problem. It wasn't until some time later I tried booting phone 1 and found it did not boot into recovery mode at all either . Unfortunately I only dumped the ROM from phone 1 and not phone 2 so I don't have a copy of the recovery image that seemed to boot ok on phone 2
So anyway, I have tried flashing a whole heap of recovery images from all sorts of HDC S4 sources but I have never been able to boot into any form of recovery mode with any of them. They ALWAYS just boot normally using either volume up or volume down. I'm not sure if that is because all of the images are for the 1.2GHz CPU instead of the 1.5GHz CPU.
The second problem is that I cannot root this phone at all.I have tried the motochopper exploit which seems to be the only root option I have found for these phones (there are lots of options but they all appear to be the same tool). When I run that root tool it copies the pwn, su and busybox to the phone fine but whenever it runs the pwn script it just comes up saying "Failure" without any explanation why.The same thing happens when I try to use the root option with MTK Droid Tools. So I'm at quite a loss right now, I can't get a CWM recovery image working and I can't get root....
I've tried flashing some of the HDC S4 ROMs but so far none of them have booted (I'm guessing because it is the MTK6589T model?).The only option I have had is to flash back my original ROM dump.
Is there any way to alter a recovery image to change the boot keys it uses? Are the boot keys even defined in the recovery image? is it maybe something else like the preloader or boot image I should be trying to change?I can't wait to start customizing my own ROM for this phone...

I think where I messed up was I then installed ROM Manager from the market to try to get overclocked. Before I did any searching or downloading for kernels, I tried to do a backup using ROM Managers Clockwork utility. It constantly crashed my phone; I didn't get one successful backup. So I was going to try using SPRecovery, but when I turn off my phone, then turn it on holding the X key, the Motorola logo stays there forever, blinks, and then reappears again. I have to release the X key for it to get passed the logo, but then it just boots normally.I've already uninstalled ROM Manager, but do I need to do anything different so I can use SPRecovery?I'm thinking my phone is confused as to which backup/recovery mode to launch.Did I just mess up my phone?I'm a total noob at this and feel like a moron.

Not so long ago I flashed a custom rooted ROM. After this I realized that I forgot to save some important app configs (im history, notes). As far as I know, Android uses ext4 filesystem on its root partition. Is there a way to perform undelete or any other method to try to recover deleted files? Searching the forums gives some results of repairing data on internal storage, but I guess the user data space is meant, not the root. My device is Huawei U8850 Vision, Android version 4.1.2.
