Do i have to be rooted to use this method? How to start over: Fully rooted stock 1.47.651.1 in one shot (no adb!) - xda-developers
I read that a new OTA update is coming for the EVO. When a new update comes from Sprint, should I wait for a rooted version of it? If so, how do I apply it? Through recovery? Sorry if these have been asked before, but search results were kind of wonky and all over the place.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a US Cellular Desire - I rooted it with Unrevoked 3 forever - only to free up some memory and take some apps off that were preloaded. I did not delete any stock files - or use a custom rom of any kind. My question is - when the 2.2 official OTA froyo update comes - will I be able to do it OTA since there is no custom rom? Or will I have to do it another way. If I have to do it another way -what is that process? I dont care if it stays rooted or not - I am new to all of this - and would actually prefer just to go with the 2.2 official froyo update and not be rooted in the future.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm new to the phone and not particularly computer savvy. I've been doing my homework and research about rooting and I was wondering... a friend mentioned that when Verizon releases an upgrade to Android OS 2.1 (Flan), Android will likely remove the exploit that allows for rooting. If that is the case, you will not be able to root in the future. But if I rooted now I would always be able to. He also mentioned if I rooted I would lose the ability to upgrade to 2.1 over the air and would have to download the upgrade via a computer and USB. Is this true?

Simple question about Moto Droid Update to 2.1 truly blocking rooting after this OTA update. Will this block my un-rooted Driod so that I cannot root later after I finish some learning about rooting in the next couple of weeks? If it will I would like to root before IF that is necessary.

View 49 Replies View RelatedI recently did the Telus OTA Froyo update and now I am wondering if I can still root my phone? Did I screw the pooch buy installing the update? And it would seem most of the benefits of rooting were addressed in the update but I am interested in overclocking, better apps and partitioning. Seems like even with the update I still can't move all my apps to my SD card as I thought I might be able to and I've been told that is the dev's problem and not Google but with rooting can more be moved to my SD?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have read up a lot about rooting my phone, and I think I might give it a go, mainly to get rid of some of the bloatware on the sprint hero, and also for the apps2sd capability. My question is however, how will this effect my ability to update to android 2.1 in the first half of next year. Will I have to wait for a custom ROM to be made or will i be able to update as normal?

View 4 Replies View RelatedSo I just got done installing the leaked OTA and rooting my phone, but now I've read conflicting reports that when Froyo comes out in a couple weeks, I won't be able to install it without going back to stock 2.1. Even worse, going back to stock means erasing all the data and apps on my phone. I was under the impression that one could use Titanium backup to make sure all apps, data, and settings can be re-imaged to the phone, but then I realized that Titanium only works if you have root, which I won't if I go back to stock. But when the official update comes out, how do I install it without losing all my data? Why can't I just install it on top of the rooted OTA update OS?

Now my question is since I did not flash a custom ROM on to my device will I be able to update the phone when Sprint releases the OTA Update or will I have to use the RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_1.56.651.2_signed_release.exe to put my phone back to factory stock. (Also can I just do a hard reset to accomplish the same thing).

I am rooted with the first of toast's steps and running an early fresh rom 2.1. I never felt up to doing the rest of the steps and I never did the ota update. View 1 Replies View RelatedThe version of the software that is most current is version 6 (the phone shipped with version 3).
To ascertain version: Go to Dialer/Hit Star/#9999#
You will see the PDA; Phone; and Software Version numbers in this section
The T939xxxx6 for PDA AND PHONE and then
Software Version - ending in .006 on the last line.
I was told that the reason that I keep seeing the "No update file exists" message when I check "update firmware" is because I have the latest version.
At some point my phone was updated without giving me a message. I did notice the red and blue arrows yesterday. But there was no message. My SD card mounted and dismounted on its own and gave an error message, and then all references to the error and SD card disappeared.
If your phone is/has exhibited this sort of behavior, you may already have the update.
Onee the " official" fryo comes out will I have to flash to stock then update or can I just apply the update to my rooted phone?
