Motorola Droid :: Will Update 2.1 Prevent Rooting Or Not?
Feb 16, 2010
Did a little searching and not sure what the final answer is about update 2.1 blocking rooting if not already rooted. Simple question about Moto Droid Update to 2.1 truly blocking rooting after this OTA update. Will this block my un-rooted Driod so that I cannot root later after I finish some learning about rooting in the next couple of weeks? If it will I would like to root before IF that is necessary.

It may seem crazy, but I have an app that I use for business purposes (ustream). They do not support 2.2. I emailed them and they quickly responded with grim news. Basically, they don't know if/when they will support Froyo. Qik vid doesn't do what I need it to do. Also, I hear there are many other apps that won't work with froyo. As good a an improvement Froyo is, it prevents me from doing what I do. Any way to prevent update and update reminders?

I'm new to the phone and not particularly computer savvy. I've been doing my homework and research about rooting and I was wondering... a friend mentioned that when Verizon releases an upgrade to Android OS 2.1 (Flan), Android will likely remove the exploit that allows for rooting. If that is the case, you will not be able to root in the future. But if I rooted now I would always be able to. He also mentioned if I rooted I would lose the ability to upgrade to 2.1 over the air and would have to download the upgrade via a computer and USB. Is this true?

When I root my droid 2.1 and whenever 2.2 aka froyo comes out what do I do to update it to that operating system? Is it easy? Or should I just wait till 2.2 comes out then root from there.

I'm rooted and I manually installed 2.2 a few weeks ago, but a couple times a week I get a notification I have a system update. If I hit install later, it keeps popping up like every hour or something like that. If I try to install it, it just says installation failed. Is there a way to completely block OTA updates so I don't have to be annoyed with this anymore?

possible to prevent processes from starting on reboot/boot for Droid 2.1?
there's a few processes that are always running, that turn themselves on, which i infrequently use. a couple examples are Voice Search and Skype, which when I ended processes for, freed up a significant amount of memory and 4 processes. I'd like to be able to set them up something akin to what windows will do, where they are on manual startup, and only start when app is called on. I still want to use the apps, just don't want background processes running constantly.

I want the screen to stay awake in the car dock even when its NOT charging. Both of my power outlets are broken, so I cant charge it while driving. Kinda bothers me that the screen wont stay on. I tried running a stopwatch in the background, but she timed out anyway.

Is there a way (with root) to keep the Car Dock app available for manual launching but prevent it from automatically launching without installing another app or removing the magnet from the car dock? Can I edit the CarDock.apk file or some other system file to disable this behavior?

I am looking for a case that will prevent the keyboard from sliding out. I know I will more than likely not find what I am looking for because the slide out keyboard is a selling point for this phone, but mine keeps sliding out in my pocket and I am concerned that the open portion of the keyboard might bend, flex or crack if it is bent the wrong way. Maybe I am being paranoid, but it never hurts to be preventative

I use an app of which the new version causes a huge battery drain, so I googled for the old version and reinstalled it. Every time I open Play Store, the dreaded update shows up again for download. How can I remove it from the list? I already tried breaking the market link through Rom Toolbox (I have root) and clearing Play Store data.

I notice that my app's data on external storage (i.e. SD card) gets deleted during an "adb install -r". While this is normal for uninstall (and then afterwards install optionally to notice it), I do not understand why this is the case for reinstall (and thus for Market updates as well). I could have sworn this was not always the case.
Referring to http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/data/data-storage.html#filesExternal I am specifically using "Accessing files on external storage" on Android 2.2, but not "Saving files that should be shared" or "Saving cache files". So I am writing and reading data in "/sdcard/Android/data//files/somefolder/data". My preferences do stick.
@Commonsware: The problem is not so much with getExternalFilesDir() IMHO as I see my data is written where I expect it. It just does not stick. I am using a.o.:
public static File getDefaultDirectory(Context context, String packageName) { File dir;
if(mActivity_getExternalFilesDir!=null){//API >=8
dir = invokeGetExternalFilesDir(context, "fortune");
}else if(mEnvironment_getExternalStorageDirectory!=null){//API <=7
dir = invokeGetExternalStorageDirectory();
dir = new File(dir.getPath() + "/Android/data/" + packageName + "/files/");
}else{ //should never occur return null;
}return dir;
}

Ive been rooted for a while. I am going to root my friends phone. Its been a while since I first rooted and was wondering if there was a new way to get ROM Manager on 2.1 OTA. IS there an easier way to get ROM Manager on the phone besides flashing the SBF file which gives you SPR recovery , then flashing a rooted ROM, then installing ROM Magager, then finally installing the ROM that you really wanted in the first place?

I bought (and rec'd on Monday) the Seidio super-honking-big extended battery. All day yesterday and today (until I could get home and swap it out), I was getting false indications of low battery that would get "fixed" upon reboot, yet 2-3 hours later it would again indicate that it's low. Here's a thread on it in the regular Droid forum:
Battery meter won't accurately read the long-life Seidio battery.I'm holding out very faint hope that a ROM junkie might now of a work around. I'm currently intending on putting a rooted 2.1 on my phone, but I'll gladly deviate to something else if it'll fix this problem.

I did a search but did not find anything directly applicable to my situation. My apologies if I missed it.My Droid is currently running Android 2.1 update 1.I had previously rooted under Android 2.0.1, but I inadvertently installed the Verizon automatic system update, which took away root privileges. (Incidentally, is there a way to disable automatic updates? Before my slip-up, I had been canceling the dialog box for over a week.)I tried the method described in this post and it seemed to work, but I can't execute "su" from the terminal emulator console. I have the superuser permissions ninja under apps, but I also had it after the forced Verizon update. I suspect this is a vestige of the previous rooting.
I would be immensely grateful if someone could direct me to instructions on how to EITHER: A) download everything necessary to revert to 2.0.1, use the root exploit, and then upgrade to a rooted version of 2.1, OR B) root my current installation of 2.1.Also, if you could recommend a good ROM with wireless tethering, that's be icing on the cake.

I read that a new OTA update is coming for the EVO. When a new update comes from Sprint, should I wait for a rooted version of it? If so, how do I apply it? Through recovery? Sorry if these have been asked before, but search results were kind of wonky and all over the place.

I'm rooted, and swap roms, backup everything pretty confidently (thanks again to Joe for helping me get in the pool).
But there are some things I don't understand. I really want to go to a 2.1 ROM. I've tried a few with verying degrees of happyness, and some of the later ones I've tried just send me through enless reboot cycles. I've tried Pete's new one (figuring if anybody put out something dependable it would be him) and though it boots up FAST and runs great, after playing around for a while it sends me through reboot cycles and freezes up.
I always follow all instructions to the "T", so it makes no sense that others are having success when I am not. Is there some other process that I have to go through that are just unspoken "common sense" steps among the more advanced users that aren't outlined in install instructions? Or am I just supposed to let the phone do it's thing for a while after installing? It just makes me nervouse when it is looping through 3-5 reboots in a row.
