HTC EVO 4G :: Playing Movies With HDMI Out
Nov 15, 2010
I've been a member for a little while, but until now I've been able to just search and find answers to my questions. However, for this issue I can't seem to find anything. I bought a micro HDMI cable, and it works great when I play videos that I have recorded. However, I am not able to play movies and TV shows that I download and play with Rock Player. I've tried a bunch of file formats, and I haven't been able to play any of my own videos without Rock Player. That doesn't really matter to me as it still works fine. But, I would like to be able to plug in the HDMI cable and play a movie on a TV, but when I try, it just plays on the phone screen. So has anyone been able to play their own movies on a TV with the HDMI? Can anyone provide some input here?

This is the final question for me that has yet to be answered. It's the only thing still left up in the air. I want to be able to plug my EVO into the TV and use all the features currently on the phone. Specifically web browsing. If this is not available can we blame it on a hardware limitation or software. Maybe it's something that will work with the Dock when it's released since it comes with an HDMI cable. I can't believe I can't find a straight answer considering Ive seen the question asked on other forums as well. If it works the way I would hope then it's an easy replacement for my jaloppy of a computer.

It's been widely reported that the X can only output video via HDMI that was recorded using it's internal camera. Many have speculated that this is due to the non-implementation of HDCP on the HDMI port. I have found that this is untrue. I took some video, compressed it to .3gp (which is Droid's native video codec) in Sorenson Squeeze to 854 x 480 (Droid's screen resolution), copied it into the Droid's Video Gallery and played it out on a 37" HD monitor. It looked ok -- but it was only 480p.
Then I took the same video, compressed it to .3gp in Sorenson Squeeze to 1280 x 720 (Droid's HDMI output resolution limit), copied it into the Droid's Video Gallery and played it out on the same 37" HD monitor. And it looked very good -- as it was 720p. Finally, just for the hell of it, I took the same video, compressed it to .3gp in Sorenson Squeeze to 1920 x 1080, copied it into the Droid's Video Gallery and it would not play out at all. Not a surprise -- as the decoder in the X is known to not handle 1080p.
The key to success seems to consist of 3 parts:
1. Do not let the Droid convert the video upon import when prompted only select "No, Just Copy".
2. Also, if you are encoding to 1280 x 720 (720p) you must convert to .3gp at a combined bitrate (audio + video) of no higher than 1.5 Mb/s. In my tests, the X could not playback bitrates that were higher that 1.5Mb/s.
3. Finally, remember that the Droid's SD card file format is FAT32 so files cannot not exceed 2GB.
It is worth noting that Sorenson Squeeze is an expensive compression tool that does multipass encoding. I'm sure there's open source encoding software in the wild that will convert video to .3gp but I kinda doubt it will be multipass. Regarding runtime, it's worth repeating that I tested 1.5 Mb/s to find out what the upper limit was for external HD viewing. To be honest, the video quality would probably be perceived as quite "watchable" to a number of people 1 Mb/s.
If I were traveling and wanted to have some movies on hand and I WAS NOT sure if I'd ever be jacking-into an external monitor. I'd go for a MUCH, MUCH lower bitrate and resolution -- especially for display on a 854 x 480 4.3" screen. However, if I knew I was going to be largely watching on an external HD monitor. I'd go for the 1.5Mb/s maximum. So, you're probably wondering about the effect of that FAT32 2GB file limit: 2GB = 17,179,869,184 bits
At 1.5Mb/s: 1.5Mb/s = 1,500,000 bits/s
17,179,869,184 bits divided by 1,500,000 bits = 11,453 Seconds
11,453 seconds = 190 Minutes
190 Minutes = 3 Hours 10 Minutes
And at 1Mb/s:
1Mb/s = 1,000,000 bits/s
17,179,869,184 bits divided by 1,000,000 bits = 17,179 Seconds
17,179 seconds = 286 Minutes
286 Minutes = 4 Hours 46 Minutes
So, you can see that from a Feature Film point of view the FAT32 2GB limit is not an issue due to Droid's apparent maximum bitrate cap of 1.5Mb/s. From a storage volume point of view, I purchased a 32GB Micro SD Card for $99 with the phone. And that 32GB card should be able to store 50 Hours 40 Minutes of video at the highest bitrate of 1.5Mb/s. Which, at an average of 2 hours per Feature Movie, equates to 26 movies.

Has anyone figured out how to play audio from the HTC EVO (mp3, Pandora, etc) through the USB or HDMI ports?I've looked seemingly everywhere and have not found anyone who has done it.I want to be able to amply drive my Grado SR80i headphones.I believe I could do it with a portable amp like HeadRoom's Total AirHead through the headphone jack, but if I'm not mistaken, the headphone jack is sonically inferior to a line out jack. The problem is, the EVO doesn't have a line out jack.my inquiry regarding harnessing audio from either the USB or HDMI ports.Let's assume the answer to my question above is NO.I'm relatively satisfied with the sound quality I get from the EVO using Sennheiser PX 100 headphones and the tiny FiiO amp. The problem is, I blew the Sennheisers. That's why I bought the Grados.Undoubtedly, the Grados will handle more power. Unfortunately, my tiny FiiO amp won't power the Grados. So my second question then is will a better amp sufficiently power the Grados through the headphone jack?

so I went to sync my movies using the V Cast Media manager and it told me I could not copy my "digital copy" movies to the phone. Does anyone know how to get them to the phone to play? I can move them over using simple file manager (not the V Cast Media manager), however they still will not play. Anyone else able to get this to work? These are my ligit digital copys of the movie, so I don't know why it will not work.

Any power-point viewers capable of playing videos? I'm pretty close to trading in my Android for an Apple given that there is no viewer that I have been able to find that supports videos.
I could convert my ppt to a movie, but would prefer not to go this route. Also, I am unable to wait until 2013 when Microsoft makes available its Office for android as well as ipad/iphone.

I've noticed that none of the new phones coming out have HDMI out on them anymore. I've got a Razr Maxx that I'm looking at replacing and was looking at the new Droid Maxx but I'm concerned about the lack of HDMI out. I'm a boater and have a TV on my boat. I connect my Razr Maxx to my TV with a Micro HDMI to HDMI cable and watch Netflix when I'm on the. I'd hate to give that up but also realize that my Maxx won't last forever.
Any new phones that do have HDMI out?

I searched and cannot find an answer for this: I have not been to a hotel with a TV with an HDMI input, they typically have the red/white/yellow inputs. Is there a cable that is micro HDMI on one end and the three on the other end? I realize it won't be HDMI quality, but i could at least put movies up on the TV from my phone.

Ive been doind a lot of research trying to select THE right phone for me and one of the things Im looking for is the hability to connect the cell phone to a TV and play videos. There are some very interesting cell phones out there that dont have either av or hdmi out, but Ive been seeing a lot of USB-to-HDMI cables out there. Do these cables work on all cell phones that have USB ports? Some phones that Im considering that dont have AV or HDMI out are for instance HTC Desire HD are Samsung Vibrant.
