HTC EVO 4G :: Compass Application Wildly Inaccurate
Jun 10, 2010
I tried using Layar 3 different times in 3 different locations, and each time it showed the locations of things to be completely opposite of where they were supposed to be. So I installed a Compass app and (at least in this room) it seems to be about 90* off. Can anyone else mess around with Layar / Compass app and report their findings?

I just tried a bunch of compass applications, and they all seem to be off by about 45 to 90 degrees. It's the same on goggle sky. Does anyone else have this same problem?

Downloaded compass application and didn't find it to be very accurate. Used it next to a real compass and an Iphone with its compass....Iphone matched the real compass...this one was way off. Anyone have better luck, or did they get the compass chip from the same guy they got the crappy GPS chip from.

I need to build compass for my application.
From reading the documentation it seems there are two reasonable ways of doing this:
Sensor.TYPE_ORIENTATION method: This is the easy way of doing it. The problem with this is it is not accurate. When I compare my reading with Snaptic Compass it is about 10-15 degress off which for my purposes is unacceptable.
Sensor.TYPE_ACCELEROMETER, Sensor.TYPE_MAGNETIC_FIELD and getRotationMatrix() in conjunction with remapCoordinateSystem() and getOrientation() method: The documentation says this "is usually more accurate". The problem is regardless of the delay I register with listener the compass goes crazy even when the device is stationary on flat surface.

I'm a bit new to Android but after searching on the Market, the web and this forum, I can't seem to find anything like this but I feel like it has to exist (or hopefully will soon). I'm looking for a camera application that can place the current compass direction on the image (and stamp the saved image with the direction). The tilt of the phone would be cool to have, too, but just the compass would be great. I did find an application that shows the compass direction on over top of a feed from the camera ("Reality + Compass" by Udell Enterprises).
I want something just like this, but with the ability to save the image. In case you're wondering, I'd like to use this for bettering the storm spotting community. A problem when people send in images of clouds/storms/tornadoes/etc is that you never know (1) where the picture was taken and (2) in what direction. Ideally GPS location could be added, too, but for now I just want the compass. (Other image services can handle the location part fine, like Twitter for Android/Twitpic.)
(I'm on the HTC Aria, but I can sideload apps now thanks to the new version of HTC Sync.)

When i bought my N1, one thing (among many others) that impressed me is how acurrate Gmaps were. I was using CyanogenMod 5.X when Froyo was released and i moved to modaco's froyo with 4.06.00.12_7, since then, my gps is inaccurate for about 20-25 meters.

If I have line of sight with satellites (Outdoors) my locations is perfect(Scottsdale, AZ). If I go into a heavy concrete building such as my work, the GPS says I am at a house in Latvia. Is this a bug or something is wrong with my phone? I guess my fear is it has been cloned by someone in Latvia or something, I checked and I have no odd charges which is good. If the GPS was just broken and giving a bogus locations, wouldn't it be much more likely it would think I am in an Ocean or non populated area? A house in Latvia seems a bit too suspicious.

I was using the phone reading email and the battery indicator all of a sudden went from 50% to 5% and i got a prompt telling me to charge it. I knew this could not be right and i proved it by surfing the net for 10 mins and watching a video for 75 minutes before the phone died. Has anyone had this happen to them?

I have noticed that the battery meter on my captivate (SRE + lagfix installed) is very inaccurate. For instance, I got the low battery notification and plugged my phone in when it got to 8%. However, the second I plug my phone in the battery meter jumps to 34. I unplugged it and sure enough, the battery stayed at 34%. Anyone having this problem?

This is an issue that Sprint/Samsung are currently working on. That is all I know. Sorry if this has already been posted and you are aware of the current situation. Battery life should be adequate for the phone/use ratio regardless.

If you look at the apps that are in the "Top paid" category, and then go to Cryket.com and look them up, I find it hard to believe that these apps are really the "top paid".
For example, Buka is 1000-5000 downloads at about 1.25 or so. Color Pop! is 1.49, and is also in the 1000-5000 download range.
I've seen lots of apps (including my own of course) that are in the 1000-5000 range and cost more than these two, what makes them "count" as being on the main page as "top".
This "website" (I call it that loosely since it really needs some work!, I mean why even have it if it's not up to date with what is going on) seems completely arbitrary to me. I other words, what you you have to do to get Google's magic attention to get put on the site?
You shouldn't have to do anything anyway, it should just work automatically. Hopefully this will be the next thing they work on as well.

my wife wants a compass app on her phone (I think this is so she knows which way to walk to the most expensive shops, and becuase her friends with iPhones have them ).... as it appears that there is not one on the SGS, can anyone reccommend the best one to download? I presume that they are all as accurate as each other, but are there any that have any nice additional features?

I noticed that when I am lookinh at google map (satellite or normal), when I turn the phone the map will not stay to point to the same direction. It turns with the phone. Is this the way it should be?
I also downloaded the Compass application. and it behaves kind of wierd: holding the phone horizonally, I turn around. The compass should keep pointing to the north regardless how I turn. Mine is all over the place. If I point the phone to NE, it does show the N direction but when I try to turn the phone to point to the North it goes all over the place.
This is regardless GPS on or off. I am still at 1.5...

It's listed in all the specs I've seen on multiple sites, including on the official home page for the Legend: HTC - Products - HTC Legend - Specification
But for the life of me, I can't find it on my phone. It's definitely not listed under Programs. Does anyone have a clue? Where could it have gone if it's a default, built-in feature? Pardon my ignorance but this is the first smartphone that I've used and I was keen on using this feature to impress friends...

Just got my legend this friday and very happy about it until now.
I have some trouble with apps using the compass though:
When the Legend lies flat on a table there is no problem in finding North and South. When I turn the phone the compass needle stays. (Using the Compass app from the Market). But when I pick up the phone and hold it vertical (this is required for most Augmented Reality applications) it only points at South. And it's very annoying.
This happens with Google Street View Compass mode, Layar, Google Sky Map and the Compass application. I haven't tried other programs.
So is there something wrong or does something need calibration?
What I have tried till now:
- Waved the phone in an 8 shape for a while.
- Calibrated the G-Sensors.
- Tried in different locations making sure nothing magnetic is near by.
- Tried tipping the back of the phone.

In the last few weeks my compass has needed constant recalibration. Whenever I open my compass app, it says 'abnormal field', I calibrate, and it lasts for about five minutes. Google Sky Map is pretty much useless as well as compass mode in Street View.
