Android :: Implement Javascript SetTimeout Function In Java
Nov 1, 2010I am currently trying to integrate a live search functionality in android. I use a customized Autocomplete widget. The widget itself provides me with a threshold to only start a query after a certain amount of characters have been typed in. But what I also want is that a query only starts, say if a user has stopped typing for 2 seconds.
As I load my contents with a AsyncTask I tried blocking the doInBackground function by calling Thread.sleep() right at the beginning. If the user would then continue typing the program would look after an existing task, cancel it and start a new one. This was my idea. But it doesn't quite work the way I expected. Sometimes it sends out queries even if the user is still typing, sometimes queries are canceled after the users stopped typing. Do you have any ideas on this or maybe a better way to solve this? Android :: Not Accurate - Build Compass For My Application
May 4, 2010I need to build compass for my application.
From reading the documentation it seems there are two reasonable ways of doing this:
Sensor.TYPE_ORIENTATION method: This is the easy way of doing it. The problem with this is it is not accurate. When I compare my reading with Snaptic Compass it is about 10-15 degress off which for my purposes is unacceptable.
Sensor.TYPE_ACCELEROMETER, Sensor.TYPE_MAGNETIC_FIELD and getRotationMatrix() in conjunction with remapCoordinateSystem() and getOrientation() method: The documentation says this "is usually more accurate". The problem is regardless of the delay I register with listener the compass goes crazy even when the device is stationary on flat surface.

Jul 12, 2010I'm a bit new to Android but after searching on the Market, the web and this forum, I can't seem to find anything like this but I feel like it has to exist (or hopefully will soon). I'm looking for a camera application that can place the current compass direction on the image (and stamp the saved image with the direction). The tilt of the phone would be cool to have, too, but just the compass would be great. I did find an application that shows the compass direction on over top of a feed from the camera ("Reality + Compass" by Udell Enterprises).
I want something just like this, but with the ability to save the image. In case you're wondering, I'd like to use this for bettering the storm spotting community. A problem when people send in images of clouds/storms/tornadoes/etc is that you never know (1) where the picture was taken and (2) in what direction. Ideally GPS location could be added, too, but for now I just want the compass. (Other image services can handle the location part fine, like Twitter for Android/Twitpic.)
(I'm on the HTC Aria, but I can sideload apps now thanks to the new version of HTC Sync.)

Jun 10, 2010I tried using Layar 3 different times in 3 different locations, and each time it showed the locations of things to be completely opposite of where they were supposed to be. So I installed a Compass app and (at least in this room) it seems to be about 90* off. Can anyone else mess around with Layar / Compass app and report their findings?

Used it next to a real compass and an Iphone with its compass....Iphone matched the real compass...this one was way off. Sep 18, 2009I have a couple of images on available to my program. They are parts of jigsaw puzzle (with rectangular pieces though). I wanted the look and feel similar to that of google maps in android.
One way I could implement was to create a set of ImageViews and keep recycling them, as the user pans the image in any direction. However, to me that appears like a brute force method. Is there any alternative approach to implement such kind of application? Or rather how is google maps implemented? A set of Imageviews ?

Sep 3, 2010I've always been a fan of V Cast music ID before I recently switched to my Droid X. It was one of my favorite features. I was able to find it in the Verizon apps, as well as Shazam and SoundHound in the Droid Apps. However, both Shazam and Soundhound, no matter how many times I try, say they didn't receive any music or failed to identify a song, and V Cast SongID just stays on the "Listening" screen until I have to close the app. The songs I've tried are relevantly popular songs so I know they're not too unique for the databases. I've placed my phone in every possible way up to my speakers but no such luck. Is this a common problem? Could it be leaning towards a phone issue and not an app issue with three apps all failing to carry out their function. I'm not going to pay for a full version until I get it worked out.

Oct 18, 2009I've been trying to make my app implement the built in quick search, similar to how it is done in ApiDemos' "app/search/invoke search". I have tried everything from trying to follow different examples, to copying the code exactly as it is in ApiDemos. All I've found for the former have been concerned with older versions of the SDK, and simply not worked. As for the stuff that I can actually run and see working in ApiDemos, I've tried copying the following

This copying gets me a view that looks exactly like the one I'm facing when running ApiDemos, but when I click the search button, in the quick search box, Android always just opens up a browser window, with Google search results for the given query. I simply cannot find the critical component in ApiDemos that tells android that I want to use my own custom code for handling the search request. Both documentation and other online resources seem very lacking when it comes to this.

Aug 30, 2009I've implemented an onSaveInstanceState function in the main activity of my TabHost-based application. I need to save the state of various objects I am keeping in memory that I have all marked as serializable, as well as some basic int and string values. I have stepped through my application and watched it call the onSaveInstanceState function and presumably save everything without any manner of exception or problem. The issue is that my onCreate function is being called with a null Bundle value every time after I start the application again. I'm really at a loss and unsure why it would call the save but not pass anything into the create.
