Android :: Not Accurate - Build Compass For My Application
May 4, 2010
I need to build compass for my application.
From reading the documentation it seems there are two reasonable ways of doing this:
Sensor.TYPE_ORIENTATION method: This is the easy way of doing it. The problem with this is it is not accurate. When I compare my reading with Snaptic Compass it is about 10-15 degress off which for my purposes is unacceptable.
Sensor.TYPE_ACCELEROMETER, Sensor.TYPE_MAGNETIC_FIELD and getRotationMatrix() in conjunction with remapCoordinateSystem() and getOrientation() method: The documentation says this "is usually more accurate". The problem is regardless of the delay I register with listener the compass goes crazy even when the device is stationary on flat surface.

Wondering how many of you have a compass that is accurate through its entire travel? Mine heads in the right direction for about 270 degrees (rotating the phone) and the other 90 it is off by about 30 degrees. I have checked out 4 or 5 others in stores since launch day and they behave exactly the same. I also see this behavior using street view.

I hope this is the right section to post this, I have an HTC / G2 on a T-Mobile UK contract. I'm after a good weather forecast app that works well for the UK and Europe. I also use WeatherPro on my iPOD Touch (when I can link up to my home WiFi) and it is great - it picks up small towns, gives 5 day forecasts, 24 hour forecasts broken down into 3 hour time slots, shows satellite and radar, temperatures in 'F and 'C, windspeed and direction. It is very accurate too! I can't find it on the Android Market though.

I'm a bit new to Android but after searching on the Market, the web and this forum, I can't seem to find anything like this but I feel like it has to exist (or hopefully will soon). I'm looking for a camera application that can place the current compass direction on the image (and stamp the saved image with the direction). The tilt of the phone would be cool to have, too, but just the compass would be great. I did find an application that shows the compass direction on over top of a feed from the camera ("Reality + Compass" by Udell Enterprises).
I want something just like this, but with the ability to save the image. In case you're wondering, I'd like to use this for bettering the storm spotting community. A problem when people send in images of clouds/storms/tornadoes/etc is that you never know (1) where the picture was taken and (2) in what direction. Ideally GPS location could be added, too, but for now I just want the compass. (Other image services can handle the location part fine, like Twitter for Android/Twitpic.)
(I'm on the HTC Aria, but I can sideload apps now thanks to the new version of HTC Sync.)

The battery status is horrible. Why does it look like it's at 50% when at 30%? I downloaded an app that puts the percentage in the status bar, but it's at the top left in notifications. Is there an app that replaces the current icon with one with a percentage or, at least, is more accurate? I doubt there is. I didn't find anything on Marketplace or through search.

I just tried a bunch of compass applications, and they all seem to be off by about 45 to 90 degrees. It's the same on goggle sky. Does anyone else have this same problem?

I tried using Layar 3 different times in 3 different locations, and each time it showed the locations of things to be completely opposite of where they were supposed to be. So I installed a Compass app and (at least in this room) it seems to be about 90* off. Can anyone else mess around with Layar / Compass app and report their findings?

Downloaded compass application and didn't find it to be very accurate. Used it next to a real compass and an Iphone with its compass....Iphone matched the real compass...this one was way off. Anyone have better luck, or did they get the compass chip from the same guy they got the crappy GPS chip from.

I am a complete novice to the field of Android applications. I want to build a basic Android application of an "website alert and post service".
Eg: Lets take FACEBOOK or TWITTER as the website. The application which I design should intimate me about the new posts or tweets of my friends. At the same time I must be able to post or tweet just by opening a text box in the application and writing in it. As soon as I write, the message should get posted or tweeted on the website.
I am not sure about the complexity of the above application but I feel this would reduce the trouble of opening a browser, typing the website name and then logging in by putting the username and password.

I'm working on an app that is meant to be used by fans of a sport team. In the future, I expect to use the same app but for any different team. So, what changes would be the colors, team logo, app name and the like. So, is there any technique that allows me to build binaries for different teams without having duplicated resources?

Has anyone got the WikiNote from
http://code.google.com/p/apps-for-android/
What I did was:
1) Checkedout the project via apps-for-android instructions
[svn checkout http://apps-for-android.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/ apps-for-android-read-only]
2) Opened a new Android project using existing source dir [per the WikiNote direction]
3) Cleaned the project and let it rebuild
It won't build the APK though and reports compilation errors (the top level dir is flagged red in eclipse but nothing else is so I can't track down where the error supposedly is)

I am currently finding about how to build a XMPP client application on android 2.1.I came across this link which somewhat talks about the same problem.I am a newbie to android dev and thus found the solution given there to be difficult to digest.
The system currently has Active MQ as a JMS provider. My job is to fed the messages coming from JMS to the XMPP server and then develope XMPP client on android 2.1 which will listen and show notification to the events pushed by the server. I have following concerns(which might sound foolish)
1.How do I push the events from JMS to the XMPP server which will in turn push them on android?
2.Which XMPP server implementation I should use?I have 3 options....................

I downloaded the Android 2.2 source code and try to build it. When I executed the make command, I got an error here like this build/core/java.mk:20: *** frameworks/ex/common: Invalid LOCAL_SDK_VERSION '8' Choices are: current 4 5 6 7. Stop. Then I changed the frameworks/ex/common/Android.mk to LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 8 from LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 7. Next place, build/core/java.mk:20: *** external/jsr305: Invalid LOCAL_SDK_VERSION '8' Choices are: current 4 5 6 7. Stop. I changed the external/jsr305/Android.mk to LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 8 from LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 7
Last one, build/core/java.mk:20: *** external/guava: Invalid LOCAL_SDK_VERSION '8' Choices are: current 4 5 6 7. Stop. I changed the external/guava/Android.mk to LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 8 from LOCAL_SDK_VERSION = 7
By these changes the code started the compilation.
1. Why the error occured?
2. Changes which I did is correct or not?

I doubt there are too many people who run CDT in eclipse for native apps also with ADT installed for Android, but in the off-chance that someone here knows anything about this, my problem is that any time I run any android app, my C builder kicks in for projects totally unrelated. I have no idea why and have been digging through settings on everything, unable to find out why. All I can think is that the ADT pre-launch process triggers it via a refresh or some kind of catch- all type call in eclipse API land that I'm unaware of. Does anyone know anything about this? It's very annoying to have a C builder run for a different project than the one you're working on every time you launch the app.

I'm trying to get my current location and show it on a map. Class com.google.android.maps.MyLocationOverlay.MyLocationOverlay does most of the work for you. But it's coming back with a very coarse result that's off by a couple of clicks. I'm listening for onAccuracyChanged() but that never gets called.
How can I get a more accurate location, when using MyLocationOverlay ?
PS. manifest has
<application android:icon="@drawable/icon" android:label="@string/app_name"
android:debuggable="true">
<uses-library android:name="com.google.android.maps" />

I'm writing my first location based android app, but got confused about some of the GPS service api. Here are some questions I have:
1) To get my current location, I called requestLocationUpdates() with a listener in the onCreate() method of one activity. But what happens when another activity starts and the current activity goes invisible? Is the GPS location update going to stop? If so, how do I keep it on after the activity is switched?
2) how accurate is the Location.getSpeed()? How is it computed? Can it tell the difference between on bicycle and on foot?
3) not really a question about android. How to calculate the coordinates of a location, say, 100m away from my current location?
4) To stop the GPS, I only need to remove all the listeners that have been registered to locationmanager?

I recently posted this question on stackoverflow (http://tinyurl.com/ yzrofne), but maybe someone here can help me. I am using the location manager's requestLocationUpdates() method to receive an intent to my broadcast receiver periodically. The system is correctly firing the intent to my broadcast receiver, and I have been able to use it correctly. The only problem is that the GPS location provider only stays active for a few seconds after the initial location acquisition, and I need it to stay on a little longer so that the location estimates are more accurate. For example, if I tell the location manager that I want an update every 5 minutes, it correctly fires the intent with location information from the GPS. However, the GPS only stays active for about 5 seconds, so it doesn't give much time for the location to reach a high accuracy (say, less than 10-20 meters). My question is how to make the GPS location provider stay active for each periodic request that comes from the LocationManager requestLocationUpdates. Does anyone know how to do this?
