Nov 8, 2009Does anyone know how to use voice recognition on google maps on the droid phone? According to the tv adds, you can say a street address in lieu of typing it in.

HTC Droid Eris : No Voice Output On Google Maps
Feb 2, 2010How come there is no voice output on Google maps, turn by turn like a regular gps normally has? Is it just me or just the way they did it? Any "upgrades" (free) for Google Maps default app?

Apr 14, 2012I am planning an app using the android speech input api (Speech Input | Android Developers). How the learning occurs? So for example initially my phone could not recognize proper nouns, local locations, uncommon names of my friends, etc, but now it recognizes all of these things so clearly it has learned. But are all of these words now available to other users?
I am envisioning an app when each of my users would be contributing to a database constructed by other users, so that a proper noun that someone else entered is now available to be recognized by someone who has never used my app, is this something I can count on happening automatically?

Oct 19, 2010I'm running Cyanogenmod 6. I just noticed that I can't find Google voice or Google maps in the market. I do have the apps installed, but can't see them int he market to get updates. I tried out LFY1.7 and Ultimate Droid 1.0.0, and see the same issue.

Nov 22, 2009I recently purchased a Droid Eris for my wife. When you start Google Maps on her phone it pins "My Location" as somewhere in Northern India. Additionally, the weather HTC clock/weather widget on the home screen is showing weather for that location. The only way that I can get it to detect the correct location is to turn turn off cellular/wifi location detection and use gps exclusively. I have seen one or two posts on the Verizon forums claiming that the Eris is incapable of determining location using the cellular network and will only work with gps outdoors. I have looked through the forums here but can't seem to find any similar posts. Is anyone else having this problem with the Eris or could it possibly be a problem with this particular phone? I am hoping it is just this phone in which case I can take it back and exchange it for another one. After showing her so many different apps on my Droid that use location detection to give local information, it would be a shame if these will only work outdoors with a clear view of the sky.

May 16, 2010I have searched around for an answer to these two issues, but haven't been able to find anything. After doing the manual upgrade to 2.1 OTA, most everything is fine. However, Google Voice and Google Listen are having issues. Google Voice is giving me a Force Close message every time I receive a text message in Hand cent SMS (to my non-GV number). I don't actually use GV on my voice all that often. Google Listen seems to have lost all trace of any of my pod casts, including new ones that have come in since the update. Every episode on every pod cast has, just under the title: "Error (sd card/com.goggle.android.apps.listen/downloads/e55bee71)" The string of letters and numbers on each one is different. I used Astor File Manager to look in this folder and each of those files is not there. Some of these folders were downloaded a month ago (I'm a little slow in getting to some pod casts) and some I have listened to already pre update but still getting the error now. Some that I have listened to are not giving the error. And any that were downloaded after the update are giving the error.

Nov 14, 2010I'm sure its been discussed and all but I think that the voice recognition software is capable of being much more advanced.There should be a way to just give your phone a voice command without having to manually open an app. It probably would have to be running in the background the whole time, analyzing everything it hears, so it may use a lot of battery and cpu.therefore it may be easier to have a starter phrase to tell it to listen more carefully. for example: say the said app is running in the background,listening to every noise, but it wouldn't begin to really analyize until you say something like; "hey, phone!" or "yo, droid!" (or whatever tag phrase). I don't know what would have to go into an app like that for it to work but hey, if an app like that was designed, then I think the android would be a really smart smartphone. In the end thanks for all the awesome apps you guys are already developing. be sure to tell me when someone develops something like that though.

May 25, 2010Is there a different voice synthesiser that can be used for google maps navigation? To start with her mispronunciations and bizarre inflections were a source of amusement but now it is doing everyone's head in. I think I'd rather have Stephen Hawking than this deranged ladybot.

Jan 18, 2010After working well for the first month or so, it looks like GPS is not working very well for me. I'm not sure what changed. I now, when using the locate feature in Google Maps, often find myself in the middle of the Pacific off the Social shore. I usually try to remain on land when possible, though. Or it my randomly 'telephonist' me a few hundred yards off in some direction, then I'm back withing seconds. But a lot of the time it's not able to really locate me well at all. I think the network locating is doing 'k', but GPS is failing pretty bad lately. The icon shows GPS working, and I try disabling and re-enabling it. But that doesn't help. Anyone else having issues with GPS accuracy? Any apps that can help 'fine-tune' the GPS?

Jun 17, 2010I.e.: 50% bug, dialer issues, no sound bug, 2.1 OTA update probs, etc. Despite this, I'm really liking my phone. One positive aspect out of all this has been that I've gone from knowing absolutely nothing about the ins and outs of the Android OS, to feeling really comfortable and relatively knowledgeable (I pick this stuff up quick). And I think I really like Android, arguably more than the iPhone OS.
One of the things that has worked very consistently is the GPS and maps functions. I've been using them together quite a bit and continue to marvel at how well the Maps and Navigator apps have worked with the GPS antenna. Anyone who's had a Verizon smartphone over the last few years (BlackBerry, Palm Pre) can probably feel me with the GPS _never_ working.
A few hours ago, I turned on the GPS antenna and loaded maps, and it took a far longer time than usual to lock on to my location in an area it has found me in with no problem before today. Eventually (a couple of minutes probably), it displayed my little blue triangle avatar, but the background went completely blue. It stayed blue as I zoomed in and out, quit maps, force closed the app, reset the phone both by powering down and by pulling the battery, uninstalled and reinstalled from the store, and disabling all the "labs" buttons. I might have done a couple other things I don't recall, but I think that covers it.
Also, trying the GPS in the only other app I use with GPS--Weather Bug--didn't yield any results either. It was updating the data, but not the location. I haven't downloaded/installed any apps for a couple of days.

Jun 23, 2009The new GOOGLE MAPS? How do you actually use the voice search? I can't seem to get it to work on the Magic or find the option for it. The other thing as well I dont understand the lack of a Compass? No Orientation of Google Maps they did it with the new Iphone why not with Android?? we have a Compass.Bad Google! did they only give the USA the Search VIA Voice? Other then the 2 points I listed this app is great!

The fact is that I would like my route to be explained in some vocal way (better for driving, isn't it?).I already have Speaking Pad from `IDEAL Group, Inc.' installed. This application lets me type some text and let the HTC Desire litteraly `say' (pronounce) it. Thus, I already have the good vocal libraries, and I do not understand why I do not have the speaking ability in my Google Maps.

Jul 14, 2010Is there any way of changing the voice on these, the synthesised voice is AWFUL. Apart from not being able to pronounce English words correctly (E.g. Kew <queue> said as koo - I can't imagine what is must be like if I had to drive down Gloucester or Leicester) it's soooooo grating and harsh on my lugs.I've tried both English and American English settings but both are as bad as each other.Is there a download for new voices or one in the pipeline?I'm shocked this passed Google's quality control!

May 24, 2010So as the handle suggests I need step by step directions to do anything involving a computer. I took a jump by rooting my eris, and now I have a problem and don't know how to fix it! which is frustrating, but it is exactly the reason why I rooted in the first place! To have a reason to learn this stuff! So here I am reaching for help. The problem with my phone is that when I open google maps and type two or three characters on it it force closes on me. 50% of the reason to get this phone was for google maps. It could replace a gps with longer battery life than 4 hours which means I can leave the house and ride all day without having to plug it in. Any way I have tried turning off the phone, turning it back on, and clearing the settings on the application then turning it off again. still I get a force close message. It is using 2.1, but I am not sure which version it is using. would updating to a newer rom like 2.1 v3 help? if so how would I go about it?

Apr 8, 2010When i check my battery usage its saying that Maps has been using 90 percent of the battery. Its been doing this the last couple days even with me charging it at night. I didnt use maps at all today and its not showing up in my app manager as running, or a newly downloaded task killer. Its not really affecting my battery life which is weird and doesnt make sense.
