I have installed this and it works fine though a little laggy. If you want to give it a go you'll need to find Speech Synthesis Data Installer in market and install Then you'll ned to download the app from here and install
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=630887 it wont let me log in to latitude but I dont use it anyway

Is there any way of changing the voice on these, the synthesised voice is AWFUL. Apart from not being able to pronounce English words correctly (E.g. Kew <queue> said as koo - I can't imagine what is must be like if I had to drive down Gloucester or Leicester) it's soooooo grating and harsh on my lugs.I've tried both English and American English settings but both are as bad as each other. Is there a download for new voices or one in the pipeline?I'm shocked this passed Google's quality control!

I have had my Desire for about 3 weeks got it over the Iphone and I am so happy I did. One question I have is with Google maps I see that you can voice search I was wondering if you need to get an app for this or does the latest version of Google maps come with the phone. I love the options I have but still can not find how to use the speech options?

I noticed a few mentioning that they have voice turn by turn navigation with Google maps. I don't have the voice with my Google maps. Do I have to download an app for that or activate something for that to work?

I'll be gettin a Desire in July when US Cellular gets it. I've read that the Desire does not have voice search like the Nexus One and Moto Droid. Will GMN still have voice search for finding places?

firstly apologies if this has already been answered but i couldnt find anything: i have a couple of questions about the google maps navigation:
1) how do you enable voice activation so you can search by voice rather than typing stuff in?
2) how on earth do you modify routes so that you can avoid motorways for example? i cant find any way to drag points on the map in the same way you can on the normal PC version of maps?

I'm running Cyanogenmod 6. I just noticed that I can't find Google voice or Google maps in the market. I do have the apps installed, but can't see them int he market to get updates. I tried out LFY1.7 and Ultimate Droid 1.0.0, and see the same issue.

Is there a different voice synthesiser that can be used for google maps navigation? To start with her mispronunciations and bizarre inflections were a source of amusement but now it is doing everyone's head in. I think I'd rather have Stephen Hawking than this deranged ladybot.

No Orientation of Google Maps they did it with the new Iphone why not with Android?? we have a Compass.Bad Google! did they only give the USA the Search VIA Voice? Other then the 2 points I listed this app is great!

Google Maps looks like a good alternative to naviguate using my HTC Desire's GPS. The fact is that I would like my route to be explained in some vocal way (better for driving, isn't it?).I already have Speaking Pad from `IDEAL Group, Inc.' installed. This application lets me type some text and let the HTC Desire litteraly `say' (pronounce) it. Thus, I already have the good vocal libraries, and I do not understand why I do not have the speaking ability in my Google Maps.

Does anyone know how to use voice recognition on google maps on the droid phone? According to the tv adds, you can say a street address in lieu of typing it in.

How come there is no voice output on Google maps, turn by turn like a regular gps normally has? Is it just me or just the way they did it? Any "upgrades" (free) for Google Maps default app?

I'm still curious about what potential lies ahead for Maps and Navigation. Will there be more options for the turn-by-turn voice character? The fembot that's there now sounds more synthetic than other GPS I've heard, and the voice sounds distorted with certain words.
Sometime the maps search has been frustrating. I could only remember the street name for one destination. I couldn't remember if it was "road", "street", "ave" etc. I kept trying to type in just the street name and maps would give me like one search result for a city on the other side of the world. Often on the Droid I feel like it could give more search results. It will say "Did you mean?" and list one option - a button for "no" would be nice so it could try a different search.
I still don't understand how to best organize my personal maps, and locations that I frequent (for example, sometimes I'm out in a new area and want to use Nav to get me to a friend's house that I go to often).
I'm trying to wrap my head around this stuff. I want to be able to mark locations easily, make notes/reviews about them and integrate "my maps", "where i've been", "places i've been" and stuff like "foursquare" and "yelp".
This is all new to me, and I'm guessing Google Maps + GPS is pretty new to anyone. Let me know if you have any tips or insight into the implications of all this.

Is it possible to store Google maps to my SD card so I wouldn't need a data connection when navigating? If yes how much free space would I need? If no, are there other alternatives?

I'm currently running the latest version of leedroid and I am having issues with google maps. About a week ago after charging my phone google maps just vanished from my phone, its no longer in the application manager and I am unable to install it via the market (it fails each time) I really do not want to wipe my phone again, as I've just got it the way I want it.

I have a Desire and have Google Maps installed, but when I want to go somewhere, it doesn't tell me my turns and what street to turn on. I only see the map and that's it. When maps was installed I had a popup that advised that I should download text to speech as well, which I did. I've watched on utube and the videos show turn by turn speech happening on the videos. I live in Canada. Is it not available here?

Has anyone manager to get Trapster to work properly on the Desire? On mine the app appears to work, but I can't get the audible alert funtion to work.I'd really like to get this operating so that I can run it in the background while using Google Maps Navigation. The aim is to use Trapster as an audible speed camera alert while using Google Navigation. Is it possible?

When I try to pinch zoom in, it sometimes zooms out twice as hard.
When I try to pinch zoom out, it sometimes zooms in twice as hard.
When I try to pinch zoom in or out, it sometimes just moves the map.
With sometimes I mean, every time I'm in google maps all 3 of those problems occur more than it works normal.

I am REALLY impressed with the google maps navigation on my Desire, I have a TomTom and pay for maps quarterly and it's up to date but still does not know about the 4 new roads where i live and one is a few miles long. However Google Navigation knew about the new roads (1 extra before i knew, let alone tomtom)
How can they offer such great navigation for free when i have just paid ?74 for my tom tom map update and it's still out of date.! if htc/google can fix the issue of calls via blutooth whilst using HTC desire for navigation i tell you TOMTOM are history and thats hard to say after all these years!
