HTC Droid Eris : Seeking Clarification - Set Of Instructions For Updradation
Jun 6, 2010
Alright I sifted though all the root/upgrade threads only to find myself confused so I apologize for the possibly common question but I seek clarification.
Some months back when I got my HTC Eris I installed a 2.1 leak and rooted it. Not 100% sure but I believe it was Version 2. I used these instructions:
Now that the official 2.1 is out I want to switch to it and root it again. I started looking at the pinned threads only to realize that depending on how and what one installed on ones phone it may or may not be possible and instruction vary.
Can someone point me to the set of instructions that apply to my case or confirm that I am out of luck. If you need some firmware build code etc from my phone to make an accurate recommendation I would be happy to provide the information.

I thought I would try to create a thread with short answers and links to instructions. I would like to keep this thread short. These are answers found on this forum not mine if you don't agree with them you can argue about it on the original threads. Feel free to add questions and answers/links. Please keep it short?.

I followed Caddyman's instructions on what to do if the Native SMS app was keeping my phone awake all the time. After rebooting and letting it sleep for 10 minutes, my phone is still at 100%. I just got it last night so I just have Weather Bug, Handcent SMS, Facebook, Gmail, and Peep installed. I've never had a smart phone so it's possible on of the other settings is keeping it awake, but I have no clue which it would be.

I'm sorry for being a newbie with all this root stuff, but I've been searching and haven't been able to find a "set" guideline on what to do with my just-rooted Eris. So I've gotten my phone rooted with the DUMMIES phone-only guide and rom'ed with Evil Eris 4.0, but I don't know what exact measures to take from there to install Engtools, OC, flash new roms, etc. I just want to be careful with everything in order to have the best possible root experience D: Basically, I don't know what "pushing" is and how it's done. I think the first thing I want to do is install Engtools, following this:
http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-eris/121597-how-install-engineering-bootloader.html
But, is amon's recovery already installed from the dummies phone-only root? Do I just vol-up+power-on when the phone is off to start it up? After that, what do I do with the codes? How do I push?
Also, after pushing all these files and getting Engtools installed, do I start OC'ing and whatnot? What do people normally do after rooting for performance improvements and other handy-dandy things?
Finally, how do I switch to a different ROM? Do I have to undo one ROM first?

I know there are many threads on this already, and I apologize for creating yet another one, but I can't seem to find a clear answer on how to do this. I've already tried the method described in the "Guide from stock 1.5 to the latest root 2.1 thread" and that method failed. Here is the situation, I'm having an issue with my phone that is basically making it unusable, see this thread: Phone stuck in headset mode. This is my 2nd eris after having it replaced once already, and I'm going to try and use this problem as an excuse to complain my way to an upgrade. But before I go into Verizon I need to unroot my phone. I currently have a rooted v of 2.1, I'm not sure what is is called but I think it's basically a rooted version of the official OTA. I am not on Leaked.
Now after the OTA I don't know if 100% stock means 1.5 or 2.1 but basically I need it so Verizon can't see that I've voided my warranty. I am looking for an idiots guide to going back to 100% stock. I've found a few threads on this but I am not tech savy enough to understand the technically discussion to know if these methods will even work for me. I'm looking for a easy to follow guide back to stock that is written so that even an 8 year old can follow it. And I'm not talking about one of those freaky computer genius 8 year old, I'm talking about the kind of 8 year old that picks his nose and eats paste, the one who is a little bit slow. You know who I'm talking about we all went to school with at least one kid like that.

Has or will anyone describe the process in detail for the mac users out there. I'm on a standard Eris and would like to move to the unofficial ROOTED 2.1 ROM but I don't own a PC and am hesitant about doing it without some guidance.

I'm using ImageView.setImageURI() to render an image that has been previously downloaded from the Internet. It works fine, but I haven't understood whether the call is blocking or not. In my code, I've implemented a background thread to download the bits, in the meantime a placeholder is rendered, and as soon as a download is complete, setImageURI() is called. This approach is used both for a Gallery with thumbnails and for a single, large rendered with ImageView. The thing is working, but I see that the application freezes for a while when a download has been completed and setImageURI() is called. Which make me wonders whether I'm using it properly.
For the record, I know that the images I'm downloading are larger than I need (at least initially); that is, they are much larger than the thumbnail and the large viewer. Since images, once downloaded, are stored locally forever, I should probably create some smaller-size previews in background and then pass them to Gallery and ImageView? Would that make the UI really more responsive?

I updated my Galaxy Note GT-N7000 (locked to EE - Orange when I bought it - in the UK) from Android 4.0.4 to 4.1.2 via Kies last week. The update is so awful (terrible battery life and really slow to load basic functions like messaging and contacts) that it has finally tipped me into going for a custom ROM. I haven't done this before, and there is so much information out there that I would just like to make sure I have the right ideas before embarking on the process - I don't want my much-loved Note bricking!
So, my understanding is that there are four steps in the process:
a. Back up data
b. Back up apps and stock ROM
c. Root the phone
d. Install custom ROM
Question 1: Is that right? Question 2: Have I missed anything or added things that are unnecessary? Q3: Have I got the list in the right order?
Next, when it comes to backing up the ROM, there seem to be many programs/apps out there to do the job.
Q4: What are the recommendations for programs to do this based on the criteria of it must be a) intuitive to use, b) reliable, c) put a completely original ROM back if needed, and d) is completely removable itself so that, in the event of it needing to go to be fixed, no-one could tell that I have played with it?
I'm thinking of putting the latest Cyanogenmod ROM on it, because it seems mature, well-documented, and stable.
Q5: Are my thoughts on this accurate? Q6: Are there any ROMs that work better on the GT-N7000 than Cyanogenmod?

It's been awhile since I've done an update. I'm on Ult Droid 9.0.0. I noticed that there are no ROM Manager instructions for 9.8.0 but that states you have to do a wipe and clear cache prior to installing the update. Do you still do all this through the ROM manager? Or is there another way to install this that is "better"?

create or has in the past created an app for android. I have a very good idea, that ide like to put to work, and cannot do it because I dont know how. Also dont know if this is the right section really. If this works, or can work, it might revolutionize, lets say, Blackberry to Android and vice versa, messaging.

I've been using androids MediaPlayer to stream from an http url and have a question about seeking. Currently, our urls expire after they have been used once or a certain time out has expired to dissuade scraping content. Now, this obviously makes progressive streaming past the buffer impossible with the exact same url as you need to open a new http connection with the same mangled key, which we intentionally don't allow.
However, MediaPlayer seems to do this when seeking before the current position (i.e. seeking from 1:00 in the audio to 0:30). As the file has already been downloaded up to the current position I'm confused as to why MediaPlayer is still trying to initate a new http connection in this case? The only thing I can think of is that MediaPlayer is getting rid of audio its already played up to the current position, and hence needs to restart the connection if you try to seek back on the stream. Is this correct, or is there something else going on?

An error that appeared in my Flurry logs but seemed impossible to reproduce otherwise just occured That's the good news. The bad news is that the LogCat info is not telling me enough.I would appreciate a second set of eyes taking a look and offering wisdom. The lead up is that I was playing with my app, and put it away for a while. I did a lot of other things with my phone since, like making phone calls, etc I hooked up my phone to the computer to make another attempt to find the mystery bug, and decided to see if anything weird appeared in the logs from earlier.I then brought my app to the foreground using the Home/Hold technique and whamo the bug appeared before my eyes in LogCat.

I've tried BeamReader Pro/paid, QuickOffice free and Adobe's Android Acrobat Reader. All have problems.
Acrobat Reader and QuickOffice free do not have the ability to search a PDF.
BeamReader Pro can search a document, but won't make use of an embedded index, so searches are slow, even on pre-indexed PDFs.
BeamReader looses its mind when you switch from portrait to landscape.
Acrobat Reader and QuickOffice recognize phone numbers in PDFs, so you can tap to dial them on Android, but BeamReader Pro does not.
I am very disappointed with all of the above. Is there anything better? I see that there is a US$9.99 paid version of QuickOffice, but the description does not mention capabilities pertaining to PDFs.

I fould this online and thought it may come in handy for some people 1. Benefits The CPU drains more power if it is running at a higher frequency. If the processor is running faster, the phone will be faster and more responsive, but the battery may drain more quickly. If the processor is running more slowly, the phone will be less responsive and take longer to complete tasks, but battery life will be increased. With SetCPU, you can set up profiles to manage the CPU speed based on certain conditions.2. Main Tab and Basic Usage To get started with SetCPU, start the app, read the introduction, and pick "autodetect frequencies." If you ever need to access this screen again, press the Menu button in SetCPU's Main tab, then choose Device Selection. If your kernel doesn't support autodetect, you won't see it choose the device that best matches your phone from the list. After you've passed the introduction screen, you may get a request from Superuser Permissions. Depending on your version of Superuser Permissions, either check the box for "remember" and press "allow" or press the "always allow" button. The sliders here allow you to manually control the CPU scaling bounds. The CPU frequency will always be between these two values. By default, the CPU should scale between the max and min frequencies based on need. The sliders also control the "main" profile as explained later. The "scaling" drop-down list is an advanced feature that allows you to control the behavior of the CPU scaling mechanism. See explanations for the different governors in the CPU Scaling Governors section.SetCPU also includes a widget for your home screen. Add SetCPU's widget like you would any other widget: long press on your home screen, select Widgets, and select the SetCPU widget. A screen will pop up so you can configure the widget's appearance. If you would like it to show current CPU speed, set the Active Refresh Interval to something other than "Passive," though a passive refresh interval is recommended to save battery.

I understand Android is new, but if you've got something out there to see already, that would really help. Five years ago I used to program in SAS. Since then I've been doing software QA of various types. Mostly manual (video games + web apps) testing with a tiny bit of automation.
I'd really like to shift careers back into programming. Specifically the Android platform has caught my attention. These are the books I've been reading and working through.
Learning Java, Third Edition - O'Reilly
Beginning Android 2 - Mark Murphy
Hello, Android - Ed Burnette
However, I think I need something that looks at programming from a less language dependent standpoint. Something that takes a bird's eye view if that makes sense.
It's very easy to see how particular functions work, but I'm looking to get a better sense of how all the pieces fit together. How does one split up an app into individual classes and packages? Do I have a method in main that shuffles my deck of cards (object) or does the class deck of cards have a method I can call to shuffle itself?
I think I'm looking for a book on object oriented design? I've also been working through the tutorials and examples at http://developer.android.com/resources/index.html and also in the three books I've been reading so far. Maybe I just need to spend more time coding though?

When I had my Crackberry, I used to love a game called 'Brickbreaker' which was based on the classic 'Wipeout', I think. Anyway, I was absolutely addicted to this thing and it saw me through many a boring journey.
I can't find anything in the android market that looks like it might be the same game. Can anyone help me out here? I'm sure it's in there somewhere as it's such a classic. Perhaps it goes under even more names? Oh, I own a HTC Hero, (T-Mobile G2 touch) btw!

I have a simple question. I am trying to design a simple Android app, which based on keywords searches something and shows a listing view of results. Currently it merely searches SMSes in the cellphone. Here are some of the things I am faced with: I have a simple first page with a textbox and a submit button. It's rendered by "Activity" inherited class call SMS Finder.once I have the results present with me, I want them to be binded to a list view. Showing preview text to limited characters, say 20 chars. Clicking on the same should "ideally" open the inbox (or outbox or whatever) and open the SMS, however that meant I cannot come back to my app easily. So I would rather open the whole SMS in my own app. So clicking on the app should open the SMS in a new screen with complete message, sender info etc. Few questions here, For generic Android phone apps, what are the best practices to make UI as compliant to as many phones? Like what kind of views should I use?

So how do i turn off the voicemail instructions that callers have to sit through every time they get my voicemail?
"After you have finished recording your message..." bla bla bla.
I had it turned off on AT&T so my callers would hear ME tell them i wasn't available, and then a beep. No canned instructions.
I found seemingly outdated instructions for Sprint that dont work (at least on the EVO).
Anyone know where its hidden at on the newer voicemail system?
