I just downloaded this Android System Information free from teh Market, and I thought I'd let you guys know about it. It's pretty damn awesome. It basically tells you everything you wanna know about your phone including every spec, every task running and how much CPU it is eaiting in real time, it has logs and everything. I highly recommend getting this app.

I did a search and didn't find this specific problem mentioned so here it goes.
The Eris in question (isn't mine but I'm trying to help the owner out), has of course, horrible battery issues. So, first thing I wanted to do was see if there was a built-in power-manager app like on the Motorola Droid. There wasn't so I downloaded one of the many brightness toggle widgets.
The first widget, when clicked brought up a small menu to select brightness. While that menu was up the brightness would change as it should have but would immediately change back to what it was when that menu closed.
After that I looked in options, disabled auto-brightness, and installed a new widget. This one is a simple press to change brightness in increments. When I push the button the brightness changes momentarily and then resets to whatever the slider in the Settings is at. I've tried moving that slider and that setting is what it always defaults to.
Right now the only way to adjust the brightness is in the settings menu and nothing else will work even though auto-brightness is turned off. Is there any way around this? I'd really like to be able to get it so it can be easily adjusted without having to go through so many steps.
EDIT: Playing around with it further, I tapped the widget to go to 100% brightness and of course the screen dimmed back down to 0%. I then went to the settings menu and as soon as I entered the "Sound and Display" menu, the brightness jumped up to what I had set it at with the widget. After that I can hit the Home key or otherwise leave the menu and the brightness will be properly set... until the screen times out. If the screen times out and I wake it up, it's back to 0% brightness.

Anyone know a way (or an app) that will change the brightness depending on whether the phone is plugged in or not. I would like it to on full brightness all the time when the USB is plugged in, but use auto-brightness when running on battery.

I have a htc sensation xl. My brightness control stopped working and I now I can't change the brightness anymore. It doesn't matter if I set to 30% or 100%, the brightness stays the same.I can only adjust the brightness from 0 to 25%. I already did and wipe and stiched a phone.

I really, really, really like this ROM and I have looked at four different ones. The one thing I noticed is that the automatic brightness doesnt seem to work. Or at least, when it's dark, the phone's brightness which is too low, never changes.Am I supposed to add something else to the phone? I wiped factory and dalvick. I have v30 of Froyos.

Does everyone keep their screen brightness on auto or do you set it manually. I notice when it's on auto, sometimes the screen doesn't light up all the way. Will setting it manually drain the battery quicker? I notice in my battery usage that it says display is at like 74%. Not sure if that's normal or not. I have the brightness set at about 1/4 of the way up.

Google Phones were handed out to all Google employees. The phone is apparently going to be sold directly by Google and apparently available in January. I'm not sure who the attorneys for Verizon are, but Google must have done some deft negotiations to be able to pull this off. They just shafted Motorala, Verizon - and us - in the butt. I'm pretty sure, post Christmas, Droid updates and fixes will become non-existent as Google focuses on their own offering. Google is indeed Microsoft with a crayola logo.

After a round of hassle (many thanks to sontaikle), finally i managed to do some screen capture from my Android but right now I am thinking about this. Is there any way I can do a REAL TIME phone simulation on my PC. Its alike TV output from phone to projector (Galaxy S can do that) but I have other Android which have no TV output function from the phone, so I wonder if I connect the phone to PC and get the real time screen output (few second lagging is ok for me as well) to PC than I can project it out via projector during discussion, presentation. I have tried this Emulator, too bad its doesn't project that on the phone on PC. How to install Android SDK and play with Android 2.0 in the emulator - Android and Me

when I'm using the Android emulator I can do "adb logcat" to see output messages (log / system.out.println) originated from my code. It also shows the stack trace of exceptions which happen during execution. But, when I'm using a real phone, "adb logcat" does not do / show anything. I also tried "adb -d logcat" which also does not display anything. Is there any way to get it working with the real phone?

So I've been doing some thing to save battery life, one of which is to turn the brightness all of the way down. However, it seems like it won't stay all of the way down. I haven't confirmed this but it appears to turn itself back up after being plugged in to a charger. Any ideas?

I'm trying to test a test app I developed on android 2.2 sdk on my htc phone with Froyo on it (2.2). In the emulator it works fine, when I export as unsigned app and try to install on the phone, it doesn't allow me, just telling me 'application non installed'. The phone has the settings to accept installation of non android application, so I'm not sure why I can't test on it. Is it because it's not signed?

This is not a perfect solution but it does give a work around to the fact that, even though you can set the phone to not have the screen shut off when plugged in, you still have the problem of it dimming to lowest setting. Anyway, what I did to fix this was to download a program on the app store called keep screen. It gives you the option to make it so that the screen doesn't time out or dim for certain apps. What I did was just go in and select all apps and tell it to not dim on any of them.
Then on the front page of this app there is a button to "start/stop service" I use this button like a toggle. If my phone is plugged in I toggle that button and toggle it off when I unplug. It is not a perfect solution and requires manually doing the toggling but it's the best solution I have found to keep the screen and brightness up when my phone is plugged in. Anyway, just thought I would share in case anyone else was looking for a solution for this. Also, if anyone has found a better way of doing this i would love to hear it.

I want to programmatically measure the phone signal strength in a mobile phone. I don't actually care about the mobile phone or the programming environment: It can be based on android or windows mobile or even J2ME and can be from any manufacturer (please no iPhone). However, it needs to be a real, commercial mobile phone and not a special measurement device. This problem is not as easy as it seems with a first look. I am aware that there already exist a number of methods that claim to return the phone signal strength. Some of these are:
SystemState.PhoneSignalStrength for WM6 RIL_GetCellTowerInfo for WinCe (dwRxLevel member of returned RILCELLTOWERINFO struct) android.telephony.NeighboringCellInfo.getRssi() for android
The problem with the above is that they only return a few (under 10) discrete values, meaning that, for instance, the return values of SystemState.PhoneSignalStrength can only be translated to (for instance) -100 dbm, -90 dbm, -80 dbm, -70 dbm and -60 dbm, something that is not useful for my application, since I'd like to have as much precision as possible. It doesn't matter if there is an undocumented solution that only works on only one phone

I'm trying to use DDMS to track my allocations, but it only finds my activity if I run it on the emulator. If I run my app on my phone it can't find it, even though it finds the phone. Is there anything specific that I need to do that I might have missed?

Trip this weekend to a competition my son was involved in...we had to drive about 150 miles to another city, navigate between four different locations while up there, and then get back home the next day. The previous year when we'd gone to this event we had gotten lost twice and actually missed being able to watch most of one event we were so late. So the pressure was huge to avoid a similar situation this year.I set up nav shortcuts on one of my home pages to each of the four locations in the other town the night before. So in the morning we pulled out of the garage, I tapped the icon for the first destination and off we went, faultlessly directed to our hotel.
On the way there, my wife says "I'd really like to hear some music, do you have any Elton John?" (So sue her, she's a child of the 70's. ) "Nope," says I "but I think I know where we can find some." So I tell her how to fire up Slacker on the Droid and she enters "Elton John" and a few seconds later she is rocking to the sound of "Crocodile Rock" and various other artists she likes.Nav interrupted Elton et al when necessary to provide directions.Used the shortcuts the rest of the weekend to move between the four locations w/out fault. Looked up traffic a few times to decide whether to bail on a route or not.No screams of "What street do I turn on, what street!?!" from me, and no wails of "I can't tell, I can't tell - Oh the humanity!!!" from my wife. Pure wedded bliss maintained, with Slacker providing the 70's soundtrack for the our weekend montage.

I am very anal about the brightness setting. I keep the setting very low to save battery. While indoors this is almost never a problem but when I go outside I can't see the screen. This makes it very hard to change the brightness. How do other people solve this or am I the only one that has this problem? Does anyone know of a way to map a button (like home button) and change the operation of the long press?
