HTC Droid Eris :: Good Battery Usage Application?
Jul 26, 2010
Is there a good app that will analyze what percentage of battery my apps are using and tell me where my biggest drain is occuring? I seem to have a renegade app eating through my battery like Pac-Man.

Is there an app that shows what is using the battery? On my Droid it would actually show what was using the battery: Display, slacker, dolphin, live wallpapers, etc. On my X when I check battery usage the only thing it ever says is: display, cell standby, phone idle. It never shows live wallpaper, slacker, or anything else I run. I am wondering how much battery these other apps are using, particularly the live wallpaper. Any suggestions for a 3rd party app I can run for a couple days to see what is really using my battery.

What app would allow me to do this? I installed spare parts and it just tells me how many times i have used things, not the % of the battery they are draining.

I consider that my "About Phone ->battery Use" is not really accurate in my case. Can you advice me regarding another android battery usage monitor application ? I am interested in seeing the exact consumption (in percentage) of each service/application.

I did some testing with the Navigator yesterday and I have to say it's absolutely awesome. I'm not sure if anyone has posted this, couldn't find any mention of it, but I want to share my battery usage experience with it as well as some other cool things I noticed.
Very cool battery saver:
I used it for a 15-minute drive, keeping it only in the Notification Bar. When you are in the Navigation app, you can press the Home softkey to go back to your home screen. This keeps Navigator working in the background, but it is not drawing the maps and using the screen. You can press the Power button to put your phone to sleep, and the voice actually still talks to you and tells you when to turn. And even better, I started this trip with 76% battery and ended with 76% battery.
Now, the not-so-cool.
I used it for a 30-minute drive, keeping the screen on and letting it show me the map the entire way. I started the drive with 54% battery ended with 34% battery. So definitely keep it on the charger if you are using it for a long drive. But another awesome thing I noticed. I made a phone call toward the end of my destination, just to see what would happen. I used the Home key to back out of the Navigator (but keeping it in the background, as I said above), then made my call as normal. The Navigator still gave me directions while I was on the phone. It came through the earpiece now, so the other person doesn't hear it. How freaking cool is that?

My Eris, just updated on Monday for the lock up from sleep Anyway, I am a low user of the phone and keep, wifi, Mobile data off unless I am using it I have noticed the last 2 days the battery life is improved. yesterday, phone on at 6am off at 11pm, 65% left, no data used, few Txt messages and about 45 min of phone calls Today so far, on at 6am, WIFI, Mobile data off, one 6min call and one txt, at 9am, still 100% battery. turned Mobile Data on at 9am now it is 11:50am and battery is still 100% my on time is 5:45, awake time is 8 min (2%) this is typical for me. I don't have email set to push, I refresh when I want it. I also use Advanced Task Manager. So maybe the issue that was fixed was also causing a battery drain and is fixed now?

Does anyone know of an app that measures which apps use the most battery? I tried using various battery meters, including Battery History, BatteryLife, Battery Time, and others, but none of these seem to have this useful functionality.

I am having trouble finding class or API in android documentation which can help me get battery usage statistics per application. I have read PowerManager class and BatteryManager but they are of no use .Though I can find applications like PowerTutor that do give you battery usage statistics per application, so I think its technically possible?

I manually updated my Eris the other night and I must say I am happy with the update, it has really helped with my battery. What I have done is installed Battery Indicator by Darshan Computing. This puts a battery percentage indicator in the notifications area. I have set the built in timer for an hour and when it goes off I make a note of the battery in form of a percentage. Here is what I have so far.
Hour/Percentage of Battery Remaining
1/98
2/85
3/82
4/80
5/77
6-70

My battery seems to be draining about 1/3-1/2 faster than it normally does over the past week or so. I'm trying to figure out if it has something to do with any apps I've installed recently. Is there a way I can figure out which apps are doing the most damage to the battery?

APNdroid is a great android app and comes with a widget that effectively turns off data but still enable text/voice. It's great for a day of snowboarding when you only need the essentials but need the battery to last! The battery was only at 75% by the end of the day for me. Check it out, it's a very high quality and professional app.

When hitting battery usage, would the LWP show up under display? I loaded in a new LWP from the market and checked battery usage and display was off the chart % wise compared to my normal use. And that was with some pretty decent phone activity. I disabled the LWP to check, but does anyone know if it will show here? Or anywhere?

So I just switched to DroidMod 1.0 from SholesMod 2.0.5. Now when I check my battery usage it only shows Voice Calls, Display, Cell Standby, and Phone Idle, and thats it! It doesn't display anything else like it used to. Does anyone know why?
ps I wasn't sure whether to put it in the Root section or not, Mods feel free to move

My X recently (within the last week) started having extremely poor battery performance under the same usage conditions as the previous week (K-9 syncs every 15 min, maybe 2 texts per hour, 2-3 emails per hour, maybe 5 total minutes of phone use). After 4 hours, the battery would be at 20-30%
To make matters worse, most functions were extremely slow to respond (contact loading, test message loading, recent calls, bookmarks, any scrolling was choppy, etc.) The delay when trying the most basic things (opening the browser, making a call) was getting unbearable.
I started backtracking the changes in the last week. Although I started tinkering with Google's App Inventor over three weeks ago, that's where I focused. I uninstalled all App Inventor programs, including the Eyes-Free Text to Speech engine. This engine was recommended by Google to do things like read text messages in the Apps you create.
Still no luck.
I decided to investigate the battery use a little more. In Battery Manager, I found that "Android System" was using about 70% of my battery. I was typically used to seeing things like "display" at the top.
I have an app called Android System Info. This showed my CPU usage pegged at 100% (even after a reboot). It never got lower than 99%. The biggest CPU hog was "Android System" at 75-80%, consistently.
This App has a tab to view the log, and I noticed several recurring error messages in the log. They were occurring at the rate of about 180 times per second! The error? "Invalid TTS Engine" Well, the TTS is controlled by the "Android System". The "Android System" was constantly trying to load the uninstalled TTS engine.
I went into "Settings...Voice input and output", and, although the Eyes Free TTS engine wasn't available, the default TTS was not set. I checked the box to have the native TTS as the default, and checked the box for "Always use my settings".
Everything immediately went back to normal. CPU usage is now around 10-20%, and "Display" is back at the top of my battery hogging functions.
Battery life is back to over 10 hours, and the delays are gone.

I just got my droid x about 2 days ago, and I've gone through about 2 full cycles. So far I haven't been able to squeeze more than 6 hrs of use on it, so I installed spare parts to see if the GPS bug was affecting it.
Going through some usage information, I found that the "Android System" sensor usage was huge! Since 1hr 29min unplugged the Sensor has been on for 1hr 36min...weird.
Checking the total time since boot the sensor has been on 19 hrs. I have autobrightness turned off and I haven't come across any other posts that explain what uses the sensor.

12-1:30 "texting, downloading youtube videos and listing to music on droid live" dropped from 100% to 60%
from 1:30-6:45 "listening to droid live but probably lost connection half way through the night" 60%-0%
i also have wifi and gps on all the time, settings for brightness is automatic. cpu set 550min to 880max. and have juicy defender free running. also tons of widgets "about 3 screens full of widgets. and lookout defender/set cpu/ nimbuzz/ battery status running in the notification bar. to me it looks like its fine, but what i noticed after really looking at the plot is the battery power drops 10% almost every 30 minutes during heavy use. and a hour between 10% drops and its almost on the dot to.

There are a bunch of threads out there talking about battery usage and how to figure out what's draining your battery.
Almost all of them say to go get Spare Parts app from the market and check you "partial wake usage".
I did that and 95% of my partial wake usage is from "Android System".
Is that normal? Anyone who is getting good battery life (20+ hours) - what do you see in the partial wake usage?
I just checked my phone:
13h 10m 23s since unplugged
Partial Wakelock:Android System Total time: 13h 1m 44s
Is this normal?
The only widgets I have are:
Stock power control widget
Ringer Toggle Widget
I am running GDE in the background (not my default home screen).
