HTC Desire :: Customisation Freedom Of Rooting Phone
Aug 4, 2010
I am going to be getting the desire the second Telus gets off their arse and puts the thing out and I really want to root it because of how much customization freedom it allows. The one thing I am worried about is warranty. If I root with Telus how would I go about UNROOTing and bringing the phone back to 100% stock in case something should go wrong?

I am looking at buying a HTC Desire, but would like to try rooting it and loading custom firmware. I am sure I read somewhere that it is not possible to Root a phone that has already been updated with the standard 2.2 OTA update.

This is my 1st thread so i am very sorry if this is in the wrong place or i have done something wrong so just be gentle with me Well I live in the uk and I am going to get a htc desire on contract and i was wondering which networks you would recommend? In terms of 3g coverage but mainly 2g coverage (calls and texts) also is there a particular network that brands the desire the least and is quickest when releasing updates for it. (By the way i am a complete noob this will be my 1st android phone so please don't suggest debranding or rooting as i wont do as i would just break it)

I am toying with the idea of putting a Froyo Rom on my desire, but have several questions that aren't answered in other posts.
1. Will I need to unlock my phone before, during or after changing the Rom? I am not overly bothered by the orange stuff on my phone, but am worried about losing my WiFi connections!
2. Do I need a goldcard? Some instructions say yes, other no. None mention orange handsets specifically.
3. Which is the easiest & safest method to root my phone, if I want to put the Froyo Rom on it?
4. What if I want to change Roms - do I need to do the whole process again? I've seen something about a Rom manager, but where do you get it and how does it work?
5. Which Rom do I use? I've looked at some I'd the modacco forum ROMs, but most don't actually say what you do or don't get with them.
6. What's that difference between a2sd and a2sd+? Does it come as part of the ROM or so I news to get it separately?

I don't mean to sound thick, but I will anyway. What is rooting? I get that it gives you root acces to the phone. For things like memory management and saving apps to the flash drive. But, what does it entail? Is it replacing the software on the phone? Will I lose all my contacts and currently installed apps etc?

I plan to root my Desire this weekend. From what I gather after that I can install 'ROM manager' and then run different ROMs from there.
Is this all correct so far? Have I missed anything?
Then...
Once I'm at this stage where do I get the ROMs from?
Is there a good resource somewhere detailing what ROMs have what and where to download them?
I want to go to vanilla FroYo, can anybody recommend a ROM?

I have just used the instructions on this forum to first root my phone, and then install New 2.2 on to my desire. What a improvement in performance and Shockwave flash works. But I can't install on to my SD Card at all. If I download a app from the market (or my pc) which is set to install on extrenal storage (SD Card), it downloads and the installation fails. I also can't use APP 2 SD as when I try and copy to memory it fails. so if I then unmount my SD Card, and install the same app, it installs and works fine. So do I need to do something to my SD Card?

I have a US Cellular Desire - I rooted it with Unrevoked 3 forever - only to free up some memory and take some apps off that were preloaded. I did not delete any stock files - or use a custom rom of any kind. My question is - when the 2.2 official OTA froyo update comes - will I be able to do it OTA since there is no custom rom? Or will I have to do it another way. If I have to do it another way -what is that process? I dont care if it stays rooted or not - I am new to all of this - and would actually prefer just to go with the 2.2 official froyo update and not be rooted in the future.

Well I decided to have a play and rooted my phone using the unrevoked method. All quite painless.
I flashed a version of DeFrost (2.2) and had a play, but encountered a couple of problems.
So I flashed 2.3 when is became available.
Then I haf problems with battery drain. Since then there have been a number of new releases of DeFrost - pretty much every day.
So I decided to restore my Nandroid backup and stick with the stock ROM until things settle down a bit.
Having done this, I can no longer get into recovery. The phone hangs on the Pink Circle screen and I have to pull the battery.
So has restoring the Nandroid backup which was made using the ClockWorkMod Recovery destroyed the recovery flash, and is that what you would expect or has something bizarre happened to me.
Just curious as I assumed that once the Recovery was on there it would stay there.
It's no big deal as I'm sure it will be just as easy to go through the rooting process again.

i know its another one of those threads but despite reading up on this so so so many times and on different websites, i am finding it really difficult to understand. I have an o2 phone locked and branded. i want to unlock and unbrand (so i can use another sim and no more o2 on start up). however does this mean i have to root? I dont really understand why one wants to root, (rooting is different from unbranding right? but once u root u will unbrand, correct?) but can u unbrand without rooting? also once u unbrand, what happens to the market? read somewhere after unbranding they could not access very much? does it matter which conoutry you are in? i will be using the desire in asia. still cannot understand roms, cusotm roms, htc roms, soo confused

I've been following (How To Capture Screenshots With Your Android Mobile Phone) to take screenshots from the phone.
The only part i couldn't do was the driver part. I plugged the phone in with USB Debugging on, it found a HTC phone (on XP), so i thought that was enough.
When i open DDMS.bat (Davlik) it opens, but there's no device, so I'm unable to take the screenshot.
Any help appreciated. (I'd like to add to the Desktop Theme thread)

This link gave me some instructions about doing this without having to root my phone.
How to Install/Upgrade Android 2.2 Froyo on HTC Desire | Pathik Shah
Specifically:
How to Install Android 2.2 Froyo on HTC Desire
How to Upgrade HTC Desire to Android 2.2 Froyo
To install Android 2.2 Froyo on your HTC Desire, you can either use the official OTA update or a custom Froyo ROM.
Official Android 2.2 Froyo ROM Install (Recommended)
Download the official Android 2.2 Froyo HTC Desire ROM from HTC
Rename it to update.zip and copy it to your SD card via USB.
Switch off your phone and while holding the Volume Down button, power it back on.
Enter the recovery mode and press the Power button and the Volume Up button.
Select Apply sdcard:update.zip
Your Android 2.2 install should soon be complete and you can reboot your HTC Desire.
My question is...has anyone tried this? If so, has it worked? Do the gurus think this can work? PLEASE let me know...as I'd like to upgrade my phone using this if its safe!

I have a branded Orange phone and I am tempted to debrand it but I cannot find simple instructions involving using a Mac. No PCs in this house.
As the phone is unlocked does this make it easier and do I have to root and debrand or just do one of the procedures in order to get rid of the bloatware and get 2.2.

Is there any way of moving whole apps to SD without rooting?
I've recently picked up a 16GB SD card, but I can't move whole applications to the SD Card.
Rooting or forcing apps to SD card is looking more and more likely. Especially when T-Mobile are yet to release the correct 2.2 update.

Just about to root my girls branded Desire. When I did it before I had to debrand. From what I've just been reading is it just a case of using Unrevoked 3.21 now? No need to create goldcard etc? Been so long since I did mine it looks like its changed a bit.

I am rooting my desire on weds, i have done a backup of everything using mybackup pro. I will also do a complete copy of my sd card before rooting. I know i can restore my paid for apps using the backups, but will the market still authenticate my purchases when an update is available or will i encounter problems??? I have read about the "fingerprint" but not much for the desire. I just dont want to lose the apps i paid good money for (albeit not a lot )

I am wondering what actually happens with all the apps and widgets that come with Sense UI. I assume none of them will work anymore once the Desire is rooted? Or will they stay and still be useable? Can you download them somewhere again from HTC for example and install on a rooted device?
I heard of custom Roms that will let you root the device and still use some HTC apps. Is that correct or is there no such thing?
Finally, a question that might be a bit of speculation currently. With HTC introducing the new www.htcsense.com website with features such as SMS backup for life, contact editing, app shop, etc.... some of the stuff like the SMS backup sound very interesting but now I am wondering if these features will be available for rooted devices. Anybody has any ideas about that?
Would be kind of unfair if rooted devices could not use this HTC service.

I'm new to the Android scene and was wondering what pro's (and con's if any) people are experiencing after rooting on the Desire (apps to sd being a good one). Looking through the forums I've noticed a lot of people experiencing data switching/connection problems, does the new radio file help with this?
