Just about to root my girls branded Desire. When I did it before I had to debrand. From what I've just been reading is it just a case of using Unrevoked 3.21 now? No need to create goldcard etc? Been so long since I did mine it looks like its changed a bit.

I am toying with the idea of putting a Froyo Rom on my desire, but have several questions that aren't answered in other posts.
1. Will I need to unlock my phone before, during or after changing the Rom? I am not overly bothered by the orange stuff on my phone, but am worried about losing my WiFi connections!
2. Do I need a goldcard? Some instructions say yes, other no. None mention orange handsets specifically.
3. Which is the easiest & safest method to root my phone, if I want to put the Froyo Rom on it?
4. What if I want to change Roms - do I need to do the whole process again? I've seen something about a Rom manager, but where do you get it and how does it work?
5. Which Rom do I use? I've looked at some I'd the modacco forum ROMs, but most don't actually say what you do or don't get with them.
6. What's that difference between a2sd and a2sd+? Does it come as part of the ROM or so I news to get it separately?
I'm currently on my third Eris. My first had the silent bug extremely bad and I upgraded to 2.1v3 instead of OTA, so I got a new one. The 2nd one was perfect at first; it came with 1.5 stock, but soon I found that it had a broken trackball and clearly HTC didn't fix that before shipping it to me. So after further complaining I got a 3rd Eris, which works fine although it shipped with 2.1, which I suspect is really 2.1v3 not OTA, but no definite way to check. I've recently decided I wanted to root my phone, but discovered that my HBOOT version is 1.49 which from what I read can't be rooted? My question is is it possible to a root a phone on this HBOOT version and also does this mean that I'm probably running 2.1v3?
View 5 Replies View Relatedplease forgive my stupid question but i'm new to android after coming over from the horror of windows mobile i just got an unlocked hero off ebay with orange branded firmware (only noticable on startup splash screen) (build number 2.73.61.66 / i can only find mention of it in an italian forum!)am i right in thinking that when the new 2.1 update comes out, i can get it off the htc site and install it on the phone regardless of the orange branding, or do i have to wait for the orange update (i assume this only applies to orange customers?) in which case i'll be going down the rooting/custom rom route.i've been lurking here for the past 2 weeks and learnt so much, great forum, and i have to say i am absolutely smitten with the hero, it's astonishing

The contract is a rolling 30-day contract so I can cancel at any time.I'd like to move to O2 purely for the coverage.How do I go about debranding the handset and (I presume) unlocking it so that I can use an O2 SIM card in it?

So that my device is as HTC intended.Why do i have to use some developers rom that has been messed with? Surely thats as bad as having a version that orange have butchered?Please advise.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been looking through this forum for a while now as i wanted to find a way of getting rid of the bloatware on my Orange Desire.I decided to try "Rooting" and used the Unrevoked 3.1 method which seemd to work as i have a new "app" called "Superuser".However, i have now developed cold feet as i don't understand what a nandroid backup is and i can't find a definitive answer on whether i need to:
A) Unlock the phone first cos it's Orange?
B) Create a 'Goldcard'?
C) Simply flash a custom ROM like the stock Froyo 2.2 or something from MoCado?
D) or leave well alone cos it's way too risky of becoming an Orange brick.
Therefore I'd like to know if i can return the phone to it's original pre rooted state?Is there a way that was as simple as rooting it using Unrevoked?
Froyo will be available within the next 4 weeks.

Orange UK have just released 2.2 and i want to get it.So my question is this, is it possible to unroot it? If it isn't. I'll get it replaced but then I would like to help the community by ripping the stock rom if that is possible.

Is there any way to know if a Rom will work before trying it?Plus how do you know that the Rom and radio version will not simlock the phone or knacker the WiFi?Do I just have to read the instructions very carefully on each Rom? I got the OTA for 2.2 and didn't update it because the last time I updated it caused my WiFi to fork up meaning my first two weeks of owning a desire meant waiting for it to come back from HTC repair. Adding salt to the wound, it came back locked meaning I had to fork out another tenner to unlock again. so question! does anyone have experience of updating to 2.2 on an unlocked but branded phone (on t mobile). Will it lock the phone again?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently updated OTA to Froyo on my Desire( sorta forgot to backup all my apps due to sheer excitement that i got froyo , im pretty noob to android and smart phones ).I am very interested in rooting my phone but only reason i didnt look into it much further in Eclair was the reason that it voided warranty so just incase something happened i didnt root it.But now im leaving the country and it dont matter and i got froyo i want to root my phone.There are many tutorials on how to root but being a noob im not really 100% on the process.So here are my questions:

View 14 Replies View RelatedIm having some problems with my desire.. my phone is presently in a htc white logo > reset > htc white screen logo > reset loop of doom... I can load up my hboot menu but that is about it.. If i try and select recovery in hboot it just resets the phone back into the htc white logo > reset > htc white screen logo loop.. somebody has suggested that unrevoked scewed up somewhere along the line and to install the RUU but windows isnt even recognising it as a USB drive in hboot...

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am tryibng to downgrade my Hboot from 0.93 to 0.8 and am following this guide:[HOWTO] Downgrade Froyo (2.2) to Stock 2.1 (ANY HBOOT | WIN/LINUX/MAC | ROOT) - xda-developers The reason I amn doing this is because with Unrevoked I get a Validation Error Backup CID Is Missing or words to that effect.I understand that downgrading to an earflier Hboot version would make Unrevoked work and I can then root my htc desire.This is where I have a problem:

I did a factory reset, created the gold card and went throguh the process several times.If I let it go and carry on it goes through a few more things before it finally finishes. Then it reboots my htc desire and a white screen with skateboarding androids shows up, from there in the instructions it tells me to push up for flashing if i do that it goes to the nerxt option which is sim lock and I dont think that is what it is meant to be.If I boot into reocvery the phone freezes at a screen pic of the phone with a gtriangle and exclamation mark and so I take the battery out and reboot that way. Please can someone explain where am I going wrong here?

OMG my desire wont boot up right!it shows the white screen and htc but it just stays there and i cant get into the HBOOT to reboot i always have to remove the battery to kill it. any help?? plus the phones hot should i just fully let it charged while it is off?

I don't have access to the packaging but I'm fairly sure it said 3.7 Touch Senstive Screen (no mention of AMOLED). I've tried having a look at the black hue the screen displays but this just confused me since I don't really know what i am looking for / got nothing to compare it to. This post has confused me further: "SLCD will NOT work on HBOOT 0.80" lollylost100 Senior Member [FAQ] HBOOT 0.83 / 0.92 / SLCD - rooting and recovery - xda-developers. Was 'lollylost100' correct and I DEFINETLY have AMOLED just because of the HBOOT version? Or is it possible to have 0.80 + SLCD?
If you've upgraded to official froyo you probably know that downgrading can be difficult, especially if you have an SLCD screen. If you did a branded upgrade (e.g. Vodafone) then the old methods won't work at all.Since current rooting methods won't work on froyo this can be a big problem.I've created a tool that will downgrade Froyo to stock 2.1. I have just used the instructions on this forum to first root my phone, and then install New 2.2 on to my desire. What a improvement in performance and Shockwave flash works. But I can't install on to my SD Card at all. If I download a app from the market (or my pc) which is set to install on extrenal storage (SD Card), it downloads and the installation fails. I also can't use APP 2 SD as when I try and copy to memory it fails. so if I then unmount my SD Card, and install the same app, it installs and works fine. So do I need to do something to my SD Card?
