HTC Desire : Rooting 2.2 Orange
Oct 7, 2010
I fancy giving rooting a go but am a little confused about what is best, I'm not to bothered about losing the orange crap but want to change fonts etc on my desire. Is it best to root and debrand or can i just root the phone? Also does any of the rooting guides still work as i have only just updated to 2.2?
Sorry for all the questions but wanna make sure i do everything right.

I am toying with the idea of putting a Froyo Rom on my desire, but have several questions that aren't answered in other posts.
1. Will I need to unlock my phone before, during or after changing the Rom? I am not overly bothered by the orange stuff on my phone, but am worried about losing my WiFi connections!
2. Do I need a goldcard? Some instructions say yes, other no. None mention orange handsets specifically.
3. Which is the easiest & safest method to root my phone, if I want to put the Froyo Rom on it?
4. What if I want to change Roms - do I need to do the whole process again? I've seen something about a Rom manager, but where do you get it and how does it work?
5. Which Rom do I use? I've looked at some I'd the modacco forum ROMs, but most don't actually say what you do or don't get with them.
6. What's that difference between a2sd and a2sd+? Does it come as part of the ROM or so I news to get it separately?

iv been looking about rooting and applying the new 2.1 rom to my hero, Iv read a few guides and videos on unlockr.com and over at xda, modaco, and here, dont seem to hard, but my question is, can it be done the same way as a unlocked normal gsm hero or is there a more complicated way to unlock the orange version, i cant seem to find a straight answer and dont want to brick it, i

Sorry if this is explained somewhere else but I couldn't find it.
The instantroot.apk keeps failing on my Hero yet the only people who are supposed to have problems with this are T-Mobile users, correct?
I've got plently of space on my SD card (over a gig), my build number is 2.73.771.73, and I've got an unlocked orange(soon to be o2) sim in it.
I really want to see what I can get from rooting my phone.

This isn't a /major/ problem but it will irritate me if I can't find a solution! How can I get rid of all the game demos that Orange have so thoughtfully installed on my Desire? I've had a look in Settings > Applications but the Uninstall option for these doesn't show up.

I've had a look for this but seem to be confusing myself. Ive read the How To guides for unbranding my Orange HTC Desire, easy enough process. But, the guides and forum say official OTA updates are not effected but this Guide states that:

I got my desire from Orange about two weeks ago and when I turned the phone on for the first time I was prompted to install 2.2. At the time I declined as I wanted to get used to the phone and avoid any issues with the Orange branded 2.2. Two days ago I decided to update, however whenever I check for updates my desire says there are no updates and that it is up to date. Has anyone else experienced this and know how I can get 2.2?

I've been having a read, and a few people here seem to find the Orange branding somewhat intrusive. So, how bad is it? I have a Desire scheduled to arrive on Friday from Orange (their 160 cashback via Quidco really tipped the balance), but if the branding causes huge problems I might prefer to reject the phone and save myself a lot of grief.

Since lots of people here are on Orange it seems an appropriate place to ask. Do Orange charge separately for MMS even if you are on an unlimited texts contract? I get the impression they do, which is really very irritating. I don't suppose there's any way around it by ringing up and negotiating?

I'm confused as to which contract I want to get with Orange.I'm looking for the cheapest option as I don't make that many phone calls, but I want to be able to use the internet on the phone.Have been looking on carphonewarehouse but I can't see which one offers the internet in the price.

I want to get a smartphone to upgrade my Nokia 6230, yes you heard it right Nokia 6230. I am a light user, mainly want to have a device that I can browse the net if/when needed in trains, while out, etc. Any voice plan will do for me. O2 would be the best option as I have broadband with them (discount monthly). Last weekend I played with HTC HD7. CPW/o2 shop didn't have a DHD demo, but I could 'feel' the dummy handset. The both look nice, but I think the problem for me is the screen size which is massive. The Desire Z looks great but i am a bit concerned with the hinge snapping up and therefore end up with a broken phone. Having said that, I am very very inclined to go for the STD Desire.
1) Good deal on quidco at the moment (orange contract): Is it true that the HTC Desire warranty on Orange is only 1-year compared to other networks at 2-years?
2) Is the Orange SW bloatware or have they made available a plain Froyo 2.2 version?
3) Do I invalidate warranty if I unlock the phone? (Apparently Orange offers the service for 20 after 3-months in contract.

I've decided to get a HTC Desire but need some advice on service providers. Here are my options: T-Mobile: free phone, 18 months, 300 mins, 300 texts & unlimited net (1GB) - 25/month.
Orange: free phone, 18 months, 300 mins, 3000 texts, 500Mb net, unlimited email, unlimited calls to magic number & orange wednesdays - 25/month.
The text and calls are more than enough in both so the deal breaker is internet access & service quality. I am leaning towards Orange as I believe they have better UK coverage, 500 Mb net is probably enough (news, email & general browsing, occasional youtube) and email is free.
What do you guys think? Anyone have experience of these two networks in the UK? Does it make more sense to go with the bigger net allowance?

Lately I can be outside in Central London with 4 or more bars showing on my HTC Desire but can't make or receive any calls. This happened in the Putney area last week and yesterday I was in Camden so I thought it must be a network problem until my mate with an Orange iPhone sat next to me and starting making calls with no problem. Anyone else finding this? The phone says its dialing on the display but seconds later it says call ended. I do try various different numbers just to check but get the same results.

On my plan I have 500mb internet usage & unlimited push email. I currently use K9 to get my mail from 2 POP ac's but the downloads from these come from my 500mb data rather than the unlimited push allowance.

I've received a replacement htc desire handset today (with the 28 day replacement policy) and my details were moved from one sim to the other. Asof yet i have not received messages off orange to activate the phone/sim. Any idea how long this should take as it's been 3 hours now! I really can't cope with more problems as this is my third handset in a week

Today I've just started having many SMS failures when trying to send via my Desire handset on the Orange UK network. I've put the sim in another phone and the messages send (and receive) fine. I've done a factory reset and still the problem remains - 'SMS unable to send' notification. Eventually on a retry it seems they do send (sometimes coming through twice) but it's something that has only just started happening.
As I say I tried a factory reset and the problem remains using either the stock sms client or indeed Handcent. I also noticed before the reset when I restarted the phone it would take upto 5 minutes to achieve any phone signal at all - after the restart it finds it almost immediately.

this is what i was told when i asked orange about the update
Thank you for your email regarding your HTC Desire phone. Further to our conversation today. Once again please accept my apologies that we are unable to provide a date for the release. Please find below the link discussed to our website on a PC where you are able to check in the future if an update from us has been released. http://www2.orange.co.uk/servlet/Satellite?c=OUKPage&catID=1096364420631&cid=109635 9217080&itemid=1221037995178&itemtype=HowTo&mid=11 27450772656&pagename=OUKPersonal&pid=1096364420640 &product=Feature&t=Product&tabid=1 I have also supplied below the required steps that you will need to take in order to organise an update to your phone. Be advised to follow the on-screen instructions as it will give you necessary and required information regarding your phone. "your phone's features" > "download software updates" > "how do I download the latest software update" > "HTC Desire update" When a new update is made available by a handset manufacturer they will pass a version of this to us so that we can run the required tests to confirm that this update they have released will co-exist with the branding that you are required to use on your phone. It is possible that the new update that is released may not co-exist with our branding and thus we will not be able to release the update for the HTC Desire, if they can not co-exist and we were to release this to your phone, this could effectively be detrimental to your handset and we will not process for this reason........

When searching around about getting rid of the branding on a desire everyone talks about rooting and using some other developers version of android. Is there no way to just install the proper original stock untouched virgin, HTC desire factory rom on the device. So that my device is as HTC intended. Why do i have to use some developers rom that has been messed with? Surely thats as bad as having a version that orange have butchered? Please advise.

I've been looking through this forum for a while now as i wanted to find a way of getting rid of the bloatware on my Orange Desire.I decided to try "Rooting" and used the Unrevoked 3.1 method which seemd to work as i have a new "app" called "Superuser".However, i have now developed cold feet as i don't understand what a nandroid backup is and i can't find a definitive answer on whether i need to:
A) Unlock the phone first cos it's Orange?
B) Create a 'Goldcard'?
C) Simply flash a custom ROM like the stock Froyo 2.2 or something from MoCado?
D) or leave well alone cos it's way too risky of becoming an Orange brick.
Therefore I'd like to know if i can return the phone to it's original pre rooted state? Is there a way that was as simple as rooting it using Unrevoked?

Purchased my Desire 2 days ago and it has been working fine on wi-fi and mobile internet. Today though I can't get any mobile internet - intermittently telling me 'Orange internet disabled'. Doesn't matter where I go and other half's Sony Ericsson is still getting a good connection with Orange. Mobile network is enabled in settings, no difference whether network is WCDMA/GSM/auto. What's going on??!? Can someone advise please.
PROBLEM SOLVED - somehow the APN had been changed to Orange Internet Disabled so restoring default setting seemed to sort it. No idea why it set itself to 'disabled' though. Can't reproduce it myself anyway!

If I take my HTC handset to another country, will it charge me for just having it turned on (no 3G, apps, widgets or anything that uses the net in some way turned off). Cause I take it, it will try to find an Orange signal in that country if they do have Orange there so will it charge me for that? (I'm on contract by the way). Next question is similar to my last question. Can I still use my internet allowance from my contract (500Mb) in another country or will I get charged?
What is an unbranded phone? Is mine unbranded? I'm just gonna take a wild guess - since I purchased my mobile through a third-party site (in this case, e2save), those guys simply buy the airtime off Orange and get the handset directly from the manufacturer so is this an unbranded phone? What are the advantages of having an unbranded phone?.............

Excuse me if this is due to my poor understanding of mobile internet. When in my office at work the signal bars on my phone will be either 2 or 3 out of 4. The 3G icon is also present. When, For example, I try to go onto the Market the connection seems very poor. The 3G icon will get the arrows showing that 3G data is being transferred and sometimes it will drop down to a H icon.I then get the message "A network error has occurred, retry, or cancel and return to the previous screen".This happens with all other apps, internet etc as well.I bought the phone with a orange PAYG from Carphone warehouse and put my Orange Monthly pay sim in.When I am outside or even in a different area of the office the internet works fine.If my phone was showing 1 bar and no 3G icon I would accept that it is just too bad signal in the office but as I have nearly full signal and the 3G icon is there another problem?
