Sep 20, 2010

I have a desire I wish to root. I have version 2.1 stock and understand that unrevoked 3.14 might be the best option. Thing is I cannot find this version, it always brings up 3.21 which I don't think will work. Is there a better way to go about this? I use a mac.

i have just gotten my HTC EVO 4G 5 gays ago and I AM LOVING IT !! But, as i was searching all over the internet, the word "Rooting" came up a lot. So i figured , "hey ! why not try it?!" I wanna try and use UnrEVOked but I know nothing about Rooting and such.
1) What will rooting do to my phone?
2) Will it void my warranty?
3) Is it only temporary?
4) Will it help me save battery life?
5) What are other features of rooting?

I am trying to root my EVO and getting stuck at a certain point.I am following the instructions/videos found here:[GUIDE] How to root Android 2.2 on the EVO 4G - xda-developers.I have followed the directions successfully up until I am instructed to me to boot with HBOOT USB and then remove the battery to restart, and run reflash.exe.I am stuck running unrevoked (reflash); the phone does not display the console but rather boots normally. The first time running reflash seems to be working normally until it reboots and searches for the phone, at which point hangs. Any attempt to restart the process will hang at Pushing Recovery Image. I have waited patiently over 10 minutes for each. After the phone fully boots it my computer lists in Device Manager now lists my phone under ADB Interface.I am using windows 7. I have USB debugging I have removed HTC sync (still have HTC drivers installed) and installed the Android Bootloader Drivers. I also am running reflash.exe as Admin.

I posted this on the xda-developers forum yesterday. Maybe someone here has some insight too.

I have followed instructions on the following page on rooting my phone:
How To: Root the HTC Wildfire (Unrevoked Method) | TheUnlockr
At the bottom, There are some steps, Quoting these:
"7. Plug in your phone into your computer via usb cable. 8. It should automatically locate your phone that is plugged in and you can just follow the prompts to continue. 9. Done! You are rooted and have a custom recovery image!"
I have unrEVOked open, And followed all instructions, And it still says "waiting for device", Why?

In the thread that has a guide to rooting with unrevoked 3 it states that you should have a 2gig available on the sd card, but also states if you have less than 4 gigs available you must format. Is it ok then to format the card if its only 2gigs to being with and root it that way? Sorry sounds confusing, I'm just wondering if 2gigs is enough.

I had a rooted Incredible using this method before however I had a problem with the on screen keyboard so I got a replacement. The replacement just came yesterday. Now I am rooting the replacement and the Unrevoked 3 program gets stuck at "Waiting for root... (Safe to restart if this doesn't work)"
I have the HBOOT drivers installed and my phone comes up in device manager as "Android Composite ADB Interface"
Did they apply a new update to the phone that prevents rooting? If so how long before I can get around it?

I installed unrEVOked3. It says it was successful. I downloaded ROM manager, busybox, and Titanium Backup. Busybox says my phone is rooted. I have a USCC american HTC Desire. I tried to Install Defrost 5.7 when I try to install in it looks like all is well, then it goes to a white screen with green HTC logo. I then have to do a battery pull and restore to get back to my phone being usable. I am getting a list of saved backups because I have been trying repeatedly.

I recently recieved a replacement desire following an claim. Once out of the box i realised that this was vodafone branded (my original showed no branding). I was a bit pi**ed off with this so decided to have a go at rooting the thing. I used unrevoked3 and clockwork mod but due to this being 2.1 firmware found that I was unable to change the rom. I would now like to unroot my desire as it has seemingly developed a fault and repeatedly reboots, so I may have to send back. This developed some 10 days after the root so don't think this is the cause. I also did a factory reset and the problem still occurs.

I finally got the guts to do root, and this is my problem. When I am trying to connect to my device i get this error message in the middle of the loop of the adb shell
* daemon not running. starting it now *
then the loop stops, or I should say hangs up there till I hit control c then hit yes. I tried and tried for a couple hours and cannot get this to work. I followed everything on the 10 min video, but still cannot get it to work. in my device manager it is installed under android devices (my htc) not sure what that is windows XP pro. Also in the recovery mode it goes to HTC storage device. What am I doing wrong?

I am trying to root and install a 2.1 ROM on my Hero. I've downloaded and run the InstantRoot app on my phone, and then installed Titanium Backup as suggested in the thread here.
When I open it, I get the following error:
"busybox works but the "su" command does not elevate to root: "whoami" reports "whoami: unknown uid 10069" instead of root/uid 0. I think your "Superuser Whitelist" system app does not work. Please check with your ROM provider."
Is this error going to stop me installing the 2.1 ROM? I'm worried that I'm a bit out of my depth here, and depsite having googled the error message, I can't find anything that tells me what the error actually means for me!
I'm using an unlocked GSM Hero on Vodafone UK.

I followed a guide to root my Samsung Galaxy S3 (GT-i9300) which used these files:
- odin3 v1.85
- CF-Root-SGS3-v6.1.tar
But when I try running the SuperSU app (installed automaticallly after rooting), I get the message:
Quote:
The su binary needs to be updated. continue?
And when I click OK, it gives the error:
Quote:
Installation failed!

I've tried to root my Samsung Galaxy Y Pro GT-B5510 using a number of different update.zip files recommended on various sites and forums, but I always encounter the same problem.
The instructions are the same everywhere, and I follow them to the letter: I transfer the file into the root directory of my SD card via USB cable, then disconnect and switch off my phone. I then get into recovery mode (after several attempts) using the Volume-Up, Home and Power buttons. I press Volume-Down to navigate the red menu and then Home to select "apply update from sdcard". I select update.zip, and a stream of cyan text rushes up my screen until it hits a snag...
The red menu reappears, followed by cyan text reading:
.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.
Although the previous mountain of text rushes up the screen too fast to read, I am sometimes able to catch a glimpse of what seems to be the main indicator of the problem:
Error in tmp/sideload/package.zip
As I said, this happens with multiple versions of update.zip that I've found. What could be causing it?

I am toying with the idea of putting a Froyo Rom on my desire, but have several questions that aren't answered in other posts.
1. Will I need to unlock my phone before, during or after changing the Rom? I am not overly bothered by the orange stuff on my phone, but am worried about losing my WiFi connections!
2. Do I need a goldcard? Some instructions say yes, other no. None mention orange handsets specifically.
3. Which is the easiest & safest method to root my phone, if I want to put the Froyo Rom on it?
4. What if I want to change Roms - do I need to do the whole process again? I've seen something about a Rom manager, but where do you get it and how does it work?
5. Which Rom do I use? I've looked at some I'd the modacco forum ROMs, but most don't actually say what you do or don't get with them.
6. What's that difference between a2sd and a2sd+? Does it come as part of the ROM or so I news to get it separately?

So I rooted a week or so ago. Didn't flash any new ROMs or anything, just deleted some bloatware and set up wireless tethering. Right away I noticed the data connection going up and down a lot. Then a few days ago I started periodically getting a black popup with this: When I get it, I just hit "dismiss" and so far, everything goes back to working normally at that point. Still, it's a little disconcerting. Anyone else gotten this popup or had their data connection messed with by rooting?

I just got an HTC Desire that was locked to Telus (Canadian Carrier). I have read that numerous people are using it on Rogers network. From the day I got it when I put my rogers sim card in (the right way) it said "No SIM card in phone" so I could not enter an unlock code. Thinking the SIM was defective went to Telus and tried one of their sim cards and it worked fine, then I went to Rogers thinking it was a problematic card. We tried 4 cards and none of them worked. I then went to Bell (another canadian carrier) and tried their sim card. It worked as well but said that the phone was locked. I purchased an unlock code from the internet which worked. Now the Bell sim card works as well becuase the phone is unlocked. I put my Rogers SIM back into it and it still sais "No SIM card in phone". I also tried a SIM from a european company and it did not work as well. This HTC Desire works on the same 3G 850/1900 GSM that Rogers uses.

I don't mean to sound thick, but I will anyway. What is rooting? I get that it gives you root acces to the phone. For things like memory management and saving apps to the flash drive. But, what does it entail? Is it replacing the software on the phone? Will I lose all my contacts and currently installed apps etc?

I plan to root my Desire this weekend. From what I gather after that I can install 'ROM manager' and then run different ROMs from there.
Is this all correct so far? Have I missed anything?
Then...
Once I'm at this stage where do I get the ROMs from?
Is there a good resource somewhere detailing what ROMs have what and where to download them?
I want to go to vanilla FroYo, can anybody recommend a ROM?

I have just used the instructions on this forum to first root my phone, and then install New 2.2 on to my desire. What a improvement in performance and Shockwave flash works. But I can't install on to my SD Card at all. If I download a app from the market (or my pc) which is set to install on extrenal storage (SD Card), it downloads and the installation fails. I also can't use APP 2 SD as when I try and copy to memory it fails. so if I then unmount my SD Card, and install the same app, it installs and works fine. So do I need to do something to my SD Card?

I have a US Cellular Desire - I rooted it with Unrevoked 3 forever - only to free up some memory and take some apps off that were preloaded. I did not delete any stock files - or use a custom rom of any kind. My question is - when the 2.2 official OTA froyo update comes - will I be able to do it OTA since there is no custom rom? Or will I have to do it another way. If I have to do it another way -what is that process? I dont care if it stays rooted or not - I am new to all of this - and would actually prefer just to go with the 2.2 official froyo update and not be rooted in the future.
