HTC Desire :: OTA Updates Stop Wifi On Debranded Phones?
Sep 10, 2010
I know it happens, the update yesterday got mine... Just wondering why this seems to happen? Could it be because my phone is sim locked to Orange, does that mean that I will always need to use a gold card, or will unlocking the phone from Orange solve these update wifi issues?

An update came through the other day on my debranded Orange Desire. Anyway it has killed the Wifi. I've seen a thread on here about an RUU update?? That fixed it, but no explanation as to what this is or how it was done.

I deranged my Orange handset and upgraded to FroYo last night using the method on this site whereby you place the file on your goldcard and reboot your phone in recovery mode (I'm sure someone knows what i mean, although I can't find the thread or explain in more technical detail what I'm on about!). Everything worked perfectly until today when I foolishly did an OTA update without my goldcard in, thus disabling my WiFi capabilities! how I get my WiFi to work again? 2.10.405.2 seems to be the software version I'm currently on.

So as expected I got too impatient to wait for Vodafone to officially launch 2.2 so I bit the bullet, debranded the handset and got the update. Im glad I did as I understand that Vodafone have just rolled out a sneaky update loading the handset with rubbish. Thought I would share the experience with my fellow Vodafone users including the guide that I used in order to complete the installation. This turned out to be a very easy process which took around an hour from start to finish inc the 2.2 update and restoring apps etc.
PLEASE READ THIS FULLY BEFORE STARTING THE PROCEDURE
Worked a treat on my handset but as with all these things I can't accept any responsibility for any loss or damage that may occur if you decide to go down the same route that I did. Also please be aware that debranding your handset may invalidate the warranty should anything go wrong. Im not sure whether its possible once 2.2 has been installed to revert back to the old Vodafone Rom (should the phone need to go back to Vodafone for example) so please bear that in mind.........

Use this procedure at your own risk. It's based on information i've collected from various sources. If you brick your phone, invalidate your warranty or something else goes wrong then it's down to you. I've provided this procedure for information only. I've been asked by a couple of people for step by step instructions on how I debranded my Virgin Mobile branded HTC Desire and upgraded it to 2.2. From what I can remember I carried out these steps. I've used information collected form various threads on here and elsewhere. Use at your own risk!
It was essentially done in three steps: set up HTC Sync on my PC (Windows 7 64-bit), create the gold card and then update the firmware. You need to do a bit of preparation first - save any photos, etc that are currently on your phone onto your PC using the USB cable and the phone connected in disk drive mode. Make sure your phone is fully charged. Note down the serial number of your HTC Desire (remove battery and it's on the label or select Settings>About Phone>Phone Indentity). You'll need your serial number to download HTC Sync. Also enable USB Debugging in your HTC Desire by ticking the option under Settings > Application > Development (do this on your HTC Desire)...................

I was wondering if there's a way to stop mobile data being turned on when wifi is turned off? I usually have mobile data turned off (using Extended Controls widget) to conserve battery and I use wifi most of the time, so it's very annoying that mobile data comes on every single time I turn wifi off.

This is my first post, after reading helpful posts for many months. I was wondering if anyone knows how to stop the Desire/android from automatically connecting to specific wifi networks. I have a wifi network at home which I want the phone to always connect to when in range. I also have a wifi network at work, that I only want to connect to from time to time to update the calendar and download emails. Currently I have to turn off wifi when at work until I need it, but I've had this working before. I'm on my second Desire as the Orange 2.2 update fubar'd the first , my first phone would always ask me if I wanted to connect to the works wifi, the new one just connects straight away, and it will only be a matter of time before my twitter app gets me into trouble.

Just picked up the EVO 4G and looking to root in order to remove the Sprint apps and other bloatware (Peep, Footprints, etc.). I'm just trying to find out if it will be possible to use OTA Sprint firmware updates (i.e. the inevitable 2.2 down the road) once the phone is rooted, and if so, will it reset the phone (delete all data) or merely revoke root access? Down the line, I'm not so concerned about having root access, mostly right now with removing the excess.

I've an Orange HTC Sensation with ICS on it (official update). It's not rooted.
Orange have a Contacts Backup app that doesn't work but constantly and irritatingly tells you it's failed to connect. I don't want it or use it and I've uninstalled the updates so instead of trying to backup my contacts to Orange (which I never asked for) it comes up in "update available" lists and intrudes on my taskbar with the "1 update available" message.
Is there any way to stop it trying to update?

How do you stop the phone from checking for and applying OTA updates? I had rooted mine, and I pulled it out of my pocket tonight to find that it had updated itself. I haven't check what effect that has had on my root yet, but I expect that it will cause problems now or in the future.
On the EVO, there's a menu option to stop the update checker, but I didn't see that on the X.

I'm working on a 1.5 Android application. Developing in Eclipse 3.4.2 on Windows XP. I have a MapView, have requested updates, etc.
The problem is that after the first manually injected GPS coordinate, the app stops recognizing that a GPS coord has been sent.
CODE:..........
Then MyLocationListener simply changes the value in a TextView to match the new GPS coordinate.
CODE:..........
I added some logging in the onLocationChanged method and it only ever sees a Location the first time that I attempt to send an update. All subsequent ones don't fire the onLocationChanged method.
Additional info:
The logcat output is as follows:
10-02 17:22:34.423: INFO/gps(6671): Provider gps is has status changed to 1. Extras: Bundle[mParcelledData.dataSize=52]
First GPS update is faked:
CODE:............
According to http://developer.android.com/reference/android/location/LocationProvider.html#AVAILABLE , that 2 maps to "Available".
As soon as that "Available" gets set, no other locations get passed through. Seems a bit counterintuitive.

If I were to buy an unlocked HTC phone (e.g. Legend/Desire) on Expansys and use it in Canada, will I be able to update my phone's firmware? (it would be directly from HTC coz the phone isn't offered by the carriers in Canada).
Another question is, what if I decide not to get dataplan coz I can get free Wifi at school/work/home... will I be able to update my phone's firmware using Wifi?

I have 2 apps that need to talk to each other.
-'Hotspot' will act as a stationary hotspot,
-'Child' will be on devices that are going in and out of range.
The hope is that a 'Child' app will come into range of the 'Hotspot' app and transmit it's ID. The ID will then be visible on the 'Hotspot' app, along with other 'Child' apps in range. When the user of the 'Hotspot' app clicks on one of the 'Child' apps in range, it's ID will be logged for later use.
Can you code an app to act like a WiFi hotspot for connecting one device to several devices without allowing abuse of their data plan.Can the two apps on two different devices 'talk' to each other WiFi?

We have 4 android phones at our house (2 HTC Wildfires and 2 HTC Arias). All four phones have been working flawlessly with the home wifi. Until today. For no reason at all, none of the phones will connect to the wifi. Nothing has changed. The phones have not been updated, the we haven't touched the router or the modem. Just to double check that the password hadn't been hacked, I fired up my laptop, and it's working great. The phones will "see" the signal, and report that it's excellent, they just won't connect.
I've tried battery pulls, recycling the wifi setting on the phones, resetting the router, changing the security type, double and triple checking passwords, and the only thing that would allow them to connect was to remove all security from my router and make it an open network. They connected to that just fine, but it's not something I'm comfortable leaving.

Some apps like location tracking apps on my sons phone does not work all the time when his phones on 2g internet. But on wifi it seems to work all the time. Apps like life360 location tracking apps, remote control apps like androidlost, which uses push messages and also polling services works intermittently. Sometimes it works on 2g internet and sometimes it does not. But on wifi, there's no problem at all.
But strangely messaging apps like viber works continuously on 2g or wifi without any problems.

I've been looking for a way to increase wifi power on Mediatek phones (that are well known for having poor wifi reception).
I found two files:
- iwmulticall
- iwconfig
Those two are unable to modify tx-power on wlan0. (iwconfig wlan0 txpower 32)
Code:
wlan0 Disconnected ESSID:""
Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=off
RTS thr=0 B Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Power Management period:2
Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
Also I found this :
Code:
coex_wifi_rssi_upper_limit=0xD2
coex_wifi_rssi_mid_limit=0xC8
coex_wifi_rssi_lower_limit=0xBF
coex_wifi_pwr_high=0xA
coex_wifi_pwr_mid=0xA
coex_wifi_pwr_low=0xA
how to change that txpower value ? Is there anything to do in init.rc ?

Transfer between devices over WiFi
Any reliable app for phone to phone transfers over wifi.Thought I had found one in X-Link but it is very hit and miss if it sees the other device
Auto sync over WiFi
Is there an app that lets you sync over your home network to your computer without sitting at it?All the apps i find that let you sync over wifi require you to set the connection up each time you want to do it. I can connect my USB cable quicker, I want to be able to get home press a button on the screen and it will sync (like HTC Sync does for me just now).

I'm having to move networks from Virgin back to o2.
I'll be returning the Virgin Desire and just received the o2 Desire today.
Setting it up went well, accounts added etc. but I'm having trouble with the WiFi - I can't disable it, every time I do it switches itself back on - I'm assuming that's something to do with the o2 firmware and it wouldn't be a big deal if the WiFi worked properly
I set it to install all my apps, but wouldn't over Wifi, only over 3G, I can't browse the internet or check for software updates in settings... I've got 2 email accounts set up - Gmail & Exchange (just as I did on the other handset), and it's just told me it can't sync to the Exchange server now though it seems to have been fine so far...
Yet I've just sent myself a test email over WiFi successfully - it appeared straight away in the webmail and then back on the handset, so some part of it's working...

I had 1.25hrs of talk time use 60% of my battery. Not a good sign. Also, the reception has been very unstable, wavering between 1 and 3 bars all over town. My cheap Nokia go phone I was using had 4-5 bars everywhere. The wi-fi signal appears to show less bars than my other phones.
