HTC Desire :: Debranded Orange Handset - WiFi
Sep 21, 2010
I deranged my Orange handset and upgraded to FroYo last night using the method on this site whereby you place the file on your goldcard and reboot your phone in recovery mode (I'm sure someone knows what i mean, although I can't find the thread or explain in more technical detail what I'm on about!). Everything worked perfectly until today when I foolishly did an OTA update without my goldcard in, thus disabling my WiFi capabilities! how I get my WiFi to work again? 2.10.405.2 seems to be the software version I'm currently on.

An update came through the other day on my debranded Orange Desire. Anyway it has killed the Wifi. I've seen a thread on here about an RUU update?? That fixed it, but no explanation as to what this is or how it was done.

I know it happens, the update yesterday got mine... Just wondering why this seems to happen? Could it be because my phone is sim locked to Orange, does that mean that I will always need to use a gold card, or will unlocking the phone from Orange solve these update wifi issues?

I got my phone on Orange UK and was wandering if anyone has managed to get the official Froyo update through Kies for a branded Orange UK Galaxy S?Every time I check Kies tells me the latest firmware is on my phone, but I'm sure I read a post from Beards stating all Galaxy S phones should be able to get the update by 11th and its the 12th now and still no update showing for me.

So as expected I got too impatient to wait for Vodafone to officially launch 2.2 so I bit the bullet, debranded the handset and got the update. Im glad I did as I understand that Vodafone have just rolled out a sneaky update loading the handset with rubbish. Thought I would share the experience with my fellow Vodafone users including the guide that I used in order to complete the installation. This turned out to be a very easy process which took around an hour from start to finish inc the 2.2 update and restoring apps etc.
PLEASE READ THIS FULLY BEFORE STARTING THE PROCEDURE
Worked a treat on my handset but as with all these things I can't accept any responsibility for any loss or damage that may occur if you decide to go down the same route that I did. Also please be aware that debranding your handset may invalidate the warranty should anything go wrong. Im not sure whether its possible once 2.2 has been installed to revert back to the old Vodafone Rom (should the phone need to go back to Vodafone for example) so please bear that in mind.........

Use this procedure at your own risk. It's based on information i've collected from various sources. If you brick your phone, invalidate your warranty or something else goes wrong then it's down to you. I've provided this procedure for information only. I've been asked by a couple of people for step by step instructions on how I debranded my Virgin Mobile branded HTC Desire and upgraded it to 2.2. From what I can remember I carried out these steps. I've used information collected form various threads on here and elsewhere. Use at your own risk!
It was essentially done in three steps: set up HTC Sync on my PC (Windows 7 64-bit), create the gold card and then update the firmware. You need to do a bit of preparation first - save any photos, etc that are currently on your phone onto your PC using the USB cable and the phone connected in disk drive mode. Make sure your phone is fully charged. Note down the serial number of your HTC Desire (remove battery and it's on the label or select Settings>About Phone>Phone Indentity). You'll need your serial number to download HTC Sync. Also enable USB Debugging in your HTC Desire by ticking the option under Settings > Application > Development (do this on your HTC Desire)...................

I know there are numerous threads on here about dodgy wifi, but I think mine is a more unusual problem then most are finding. My problem is that wifi stays connected all time when it should do, but using apps that download data are all unreliable. Nearly every time I want to download something, wether it be a webpage through browser, or rss feeds through newsrob, or just to have a look at market, it only works about 30% of the time. I have to go and switch wireless off, wait a few seconds, then switch it back on and wait again. Then I can try downloading stuff.
I know I have the same problem with at least 3 wireless routers, and nothing else has the problem with any of these routers. My old iPhone worked absolutely fine with them. For example, at home I have several computers that use wifi to connect to the internet, and they NEVER have any problems with connection. My old iPhone and my partner's iPhone NEVER has any problems with wifi. I also have tried other devices (wifi webcams, etc) at home, and all with no problems. I haven't got any special settings on my router, just the factory defaults. My Hero is the only device that has any problems. Unfortunately, I don't know anybody else with a Hero, so I can't check if it's all Heros, or just mine.I'm on a Vodafone monthly contract. What are my options? Should they replace it with another Hero?

For a Computer Science Information Warfare class a few years ago I wrote a python script that ran on libpcap promiscuous packet capture files to parse out facebook chat traffic (earlang tuples passed in clear text), and thought an interesting project would be to port the program to Android.
I would like to rewrite it in Java but can't find any information about packet capturing directly on the handset.

Just picked up an unlocked Milestone and I popped in my prepaid T-Mobile card and I have my home WiFi network bur for data on the go I need to use the 3G connection of my iPad via WiFi. Problem is that the WiFi network it creates is an AdHoc one and as I found Android can't connect to AdHoc networks by default. Standard on WinMp and iOS so what possessed them to do that?
After some digging around I found a guide to enable AdHoc on rooted Androphones How to connect an android phone to your ad-hoc wi-fi network | Wissam Idrissi so I spent a few hours rooting and installing the proper apps. No go though, my AdHoc network does appear in the list with MySSD : "Not in range, remembered" but it never connects. Has anyone managed to connect to an AdHoc network on a Milestone with 2.1?

This isn't a /major/ problem but it will irritate me if I can't find a solution! How can I get rid of all the game demos that Orange have so thoughtfully installed on my Desire? I've had a look in Settings > Applications but the Uninstall option for these doesn't show up.

I am toying with the idea of putting a Froyo Rom on my desire, but have several questions that aren't answered in other posts.
1. Will I need to unlock my phone before, during or after changing the Rom? I am not overly bothered by the orange stuff on my phone, but am worried about losing my WiFi connections!
2. Do I need a goldcard? Some instructions say yes, other no. None mention orange handsets specifically.
3. Which is the easiest & safest method to root my phone, if I want to put the Froyo Rom on it?
4. What if I want to change Roms - do I need to do the whole process again? I've seen something about a Rom manager, but where do you get it and how does it work?
5. Which Rom do I use? I've looked at some I'd the modacco forum ROMs, but most don't actually say what you do or don't get with them.
6. What's that difference between a2sd and a2sd+? Does it come as part of the ROM or so I news to get it separately?

I have got myself an HTC Desire as my Orange upgrade. The tariff is really good for me and I'm blown away by how good the phone is. I have been using an iPhone for work and asides from the games on the application store, the Desire is just so much better. So I'm working my way slowly through these threads. Anything I should do as a priority now that I have my new handset.

I got my desire from Orange about two weeks ago and when I turned the phone on for the first time I was prompted to install 2.2. At the time I declined as I wanted to get used to the phone and avoid any issues with the Orange branded 2.2. Two days ago I decided to update, however whenever I check for updates my desire says there are no updates and that it is up to date. Has anyone else experienced this and know how I can get 2.2?

My Desire is about 2 months old and has began rebooting at random times. At first it only happened if i was on a call whilst charging the phone. The phone cuts out then immediately restarts. The O2 screen appears, then the HTC screen then I have to enter my pin. On some occasions, It happens over and over again before I even get the pin entered. Since then, it has happened when the phone is charging and not being used, as well as when I am on a call, but not charging. The phone gets extremely hot near the bottom. I opened it and removed the battery and it is the phone not the battery that warms up. The battery stays cool. I have restored to factory default and installed no apps, but it still occurs randomly. O2 business said I can only have a re-furbished handset!! how does that work? surely if a product is faulted it should be replaced with a new unit. It was only 6-8 weeks old when i first reported it to them. Also the wall charger seems to get very hot, but only sometimes. Anyone come across anything similar with overheating handset or charger?

I've been having a read, and a few people here seem to find the Orange branding somewhat intrusive. So, how bad is it? I have a Desire scheduled to arrive on Friday from Orange (their 160 cashback via Quidco really tipped the balance), but if the branding causes huge problems I might prefer to reject the phone and save myself a lot of grief.

Since lots of people here are on Orange it seems an appropriate place to ask. Do Orange charge separately for MMS even if you are on an unlimited texts contract? I get the impression they do, which is really very irritating. I don't suppose there's any way around it by ringing up and negotiating?

I want to get a smartphone to upgrade my Nokia 6230, yes you heard it right Nokia 6230. I am a light user, mainly want to have a device that I can browse the net if/when needed in trains, while out, etc. Any voice plan will do for me. O2 would be the best option as I have broadband with them (discount monthly). Last weekend I played with HTC HD7. CPW/o2 shop didn't have a DHD demo, but I could 'feel' the dummy handset. The both look nice, but I think the problem for me is the screen size which is massive. The Desire Z looks great but i am a bit concerned with the hinge snapping up and therefore end up with a broken phone. Having said that, I am very very inclined to go for the STD Desire.
1) Good deal on quidco at the moment (orange contract): Is it true that the HTC Desire warranty on Orange is only 1-year compared to other networks at 2-years?
2) Is the Orange SW bloatware or have they made available a plain Froyo 2.2 version?
3) Do I invalidate warranty if I unlock the phone? (Apparently Orange offers the service for 20 after 3-months in contract.

Is it best to root and debrand or can i just root the phone? Also does any of the rooting guides still work as i have only just updated to 2.2?
Sorry for all the questions but wanna make sure i do everything right.

I've decided to get a HTC Desire but need some advice on service providers. Here are my options: T-Mobile: free phone, 18 months, 300 mins, 300 texts & unlimited net (1GB) - 25/month.
Orange: free phone, 18 months, 300 mins, 3000 texts, 500Mb net, unlimited email, unlimited calls to magic number & orange wednesdays - 25/month.
The text and calls are more than enough in both so the deal breaker is internet access & service quality. I am leaning towards Orange as I believe they have better UK coverage, 500 Mb net is probably enough (news, email & general browsing, occasional youtube) and email is free.
What do you guys think? Anyone have experience of these two networks in the UK? Does it make more sense to go with the bigger net allowance?
