Does anyone knows if the wifi networks for android phones are based on Access Point Names (APN) ? I ask because in my android application I plan to overwrite some fields in all APN's to disable cellular network, but I still want to have available the wifi for the user.

I've been emailing the dev of Toggle Data Widget because I could not get it to work on my droid reading through the comments I was not the only one. He is telling me to look in my settings under wireless & networks and tell him what I have for APN's. Well the thing is I don't even have anything in there! Does some body know where to find what he's talking about? I emailed him telling him I couldn't find it anywhere and he seems baffled as well.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just bought a unlocked galaxy note and I had to to get my access point names right so I could use my data form AT&T. I'm ready to rooted my phone and flash a ics firmware (rom) on my samsung galaxy note N-7000. when I flash, will my access point names be ok. I've already went ahead and copy on paper the way they are now so I wont lose them.
P.S. Your access point names are how you get your data from your cell phone provider such as at&t, sprint, boost mobile, etc etc. It has nothing to do with your wi-fi.

I am using ralink WiFi driver in android, I am able to connect to the access-point using the Wireless Settings provided in the Android, But once I connect to the network and restart the WiFi. I have to reconnect manually by providing the authentication key. WiFi Manager is not remembering the last access point used. I am using the Settings application provided by the android.

When I turn on my phone it searches and connects to the first access point it finds, which is not necessarily the one with the strongest signal. e.g. I have one access point on channel 10 (lounge) and another on channel 1 (bedroom). When I'm in the lounge it always connects to the A/P in the bedroom, unless I actively "forget" that network, even though the signal strength of the one in the bedroom is VERY weak. Is there a way to force it to pick the strongest A/P?

Therefor I start a scan (WifiManager.startScan()) and listen to BroadCastEvents of type SCAN_RESULTS_AVAILABLE_ACTION and NETWORK_STATE_CHANGED_ACTION. When the scan results are available, I check if my AP is found and if so I connect to it.
When I'm connected to the AP, I receive a NETWORK_STATE_CHANGED_ACTION and there I open a SocketConnection to my serverSocket. The problem I'm having is that on the moment that I'm connected to the AP, the DHCP request is not yet finished. This causes the opening of the socketConnection to throw a "SocketException: Network unreachable". A few moments later I see in the logcat logging: WifiStateTracker - DhcpHandler: DHCP request succeeded. If I try to connect after this message, all goes fine. is there an event that I can listen to that informs me that the DHCP request is done? Now I try to create a connection and while an error occurs I retry. This is however very dangerous for hanging (if e.g the dhcp fails, the loop will never stop...)

What could I have done wrong. also...i thought maybe I had to turn on wifi in the phone settings. when I went to turn on, it said it was unable to turn on wifi. I went back to the tether and turned it off but the phone settings still could not turn on wifi.

When I start the tether, I don't receive any errors (although I haven't checked the log), but when I look for the Droids access point, it's not shown on the list. View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm having an issue with my wifi not connecting. I have to AP's in my house, on different channels. They work perfectly fine. I have the wifi toggle setting on the home screen that I usually press to toggle the wifi on/off. Recently, it hasn't been working after I disconnect from 3G and connect to wifi. It says the wifi is turned on, but it won't connect to either of the remembered APs. The only way to get it to automatically connect is to go to settings and view the list of APs. Only then will it connect to one of the two APs. This is really annoying, as it seemed to only start this recently and nothing has changed. My wifi sleep policy is never to turn off. It's a droid eris with 2.1 OTA. Ran a virus scan, nothing. Any ideas?

If I use getScanResult() I will be able to get the information about different networks but for example if I am in a school where all access points are under network (SSID) "The school". Will getScanResult() filter out other access points than the one it's closest to and only return 1 BSSID for that network?

I'm trying to scan for wireless networks and found this helpful source on the net. Unfortunately it's not working and I have no idea why. My problem is that I can't wait 10 minutes for the result - I need them within a few seconds and thought about setting the boolean variable waiting on false as soon as I get a result, well it runs forever. Looks like nothing is received.

I was wondering is it possible to get a notification of when a new configured network is added to the Wifi Manager in Android? I know you can get the current list of configured networks.

Does Android provide a notification of being in vicinity of a new Wifi Network? Whether the device is configured to connect to that wifi network depends on whether the device has the wifi configuration set for that particular wifi network, but is it possible to get notification whenever entering any new wifi network?
I saw the WifiManager class but the states inside the class do not seem to achieve what I am trying to do. Any ideas?

We have an application where we'd like to use the WiFi connection on a local network (intranet) with no Internet connectivity, and use the 3G connection simultaneously as the data connection to the internet. To summarize:
We need to connect to two distinct networks at the same time - We need data traffic to be properly routed to the appropriate network based on its IP address - We need both radios (WiFi and 3G) on and active. This can easily be done on the iPhone, but not sure if it can be done on the Android.
