HTC Desire HD :: Should I Keep DHD Or Return It?
Oct 23, 2010
I have had the DHD for 4 days now, and i am still undecided as to weather i should keep it or not. For me the bad points are:
- Its weight, just seems too heavy for something which is on me constantly
- Battery life - Barely lasts a day with average use, 65% of which went on powering the huge screen
- Its size, is it just too big? Especialy as if i was too make use of it and watch a movie
for example, i very much doubt the battery would last long enough for me to get to the end.I realise these are a lot of personal preferences but was just looking for a bit of help deciding. I am tempted to return the handset and downgrading to the Desire and saving myself month.

Love my new Desire but T-Mobile is the biggest load of steaming $hit ever! I remember when it was "one to one", it just as bad then!
I never get proper reception in my flat or pretty much anywhere, I live in Bucks and should get good reception but I never do. Its only ever at 3 bars HSDPA max, most of the time its 2G 3 bars, or if im in my flat, sweet FA.
My wifes damn iPhone sits there smugly with full 3G reception. I tried swpping my sim into another phone and its still crap.
Can I get off this contract as I'm in 14 days still obviously I will get the phone but with another provider...is this do-able? or will they say nothing wrong with the phone etc etc.

If I need to return my phone before the 30 days are up and they are out of stock, will they still honor the return policy and just call you when they have one available or will you have to stick with the phone that you have?

Planning on returning my HTC EVO at Radio Shack. Also cancelling my Sprint Service. What's the best way to proceed? Should I port my number to my new provider and then return the phone to RS or should I call Sprint first? I am within the 30 days return stuff. I'm confused.

My eris has that "scrolling to the left" thing. I have not other problems. Is it worth returning under my year warranty or it that just asking for other problems? (from what I have read about some returns) and will it happen again with another phone? Somebody mentioned the Chargers were the culprit while I read it could be a software problem? I can deal with the scrolling left when plugged in, but that silent call thing would drive me nuts.

My current contract expires with Cincinnati Bell tomorrow. I want to get the Incredible but I don't want to keep my current carrier for another month. I was thinking that I could just pickup the Motorola Droid from Best But for 19.99 and return it later when the Incredible was in stock. Do they have the 30 return like the Verizon store? Also Walmart has them for the same price so does anyone know their return policy?

I am developing an app that will use bluetooth and return values to an app. I am having some problems using my Arduino (Uno rev3) Development board to send data to the board from my arduino program. I am using a sample code to test with turning on and off an LED. So far I have tested the Arduino code with its serial monitor to send data and it seems that it accepts sending the "D" letter value. I believe it is accepting its command because it is used to its own protocol of bytes or something similar. I am not sure if I am using the correct command to send data from my android to the arduino here is a snippet of the command to send a capital "D" to turn on a LED:
public class LEDtest extends Activity{
@Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
// TODO Auto-generated method stub[code]....
I want to know if there's a command that will change it to to a universal protocol of bytes or if there's something I'm missing.

According to my research, which includes reputable sources (Mark Murphy et al), the most preferred way of polling a remote source and presenting said data to the user is by creating a service and using AsyncTask within that service to do the polling. I have done that.But, when I read the docs there seem to be several "Threading Rules" that conflict with this way of doing things: "The task instance must be created on the UI thread." and "execute(Params...) must be invoked on the UI thread." As stated, I have created the task instance on the Service thread (not the UI thread). Am I missing something? Also, when the AsyncTask finished, I sent out a Broadcast on onPostExecute, which is then picked up by the Activity, telling it to retrieve the final value again from the service (since I couldn't obviously update the UI from the service). I couldn't figure out any other way to return the result of the AsyncTask. Is this the correct practice?

Right now, I am running 2.05.00.06.11 baseband radio with SkyRaider 2.5.2 HTC Sense. I am looking to use the unRevoked forever to allow my phone to have S-OFF and permit me to update the baseband radio to 2.15.00.07.28. My question is, should I happen to need to take my phone in for repair, will it be tough to go back to factory?As some of you may know, the good folks that designed unRevoked now have an S-ON tool that will allow you to turn S-ON. I know that I could do that, put my original setup back one (2.1update1) and remove root. But what about that radio baseband?

If anyone craves a return to the flipping flip-clock, Kendon over at the MoDaco forum's has brought it back as an update.zip - you will need to have a rooted phone with a custom ROM/recovery image, but I can vouch for me that it has worked perfectly without a wipe - and no noticeable slowing down.

So I signed up for verizon last week after deciding to leave att and picked up a droid. I already had heard of this phone and decided I would at least use the regular droid in the interim. Thankfully I picked up the droid on the 16th, so the droid x release day is within the 30 day window. Can I just go in on the 15th and exchange the droid for the droid x? I know the pre order situation is unknown, but if reorders are available can I pre order even though I haven't returned the droid yet?

I woke up this morning to find a line of dead pixels across the bottom of my screen, right through the phone, drawer & contacts icons. Below the line everything was all flashy & glitch. I did a soft reset, battery pull and started it back up with the same results. I then did a hard factory reset with the same results. The phone was purchased from a Wal-mart that was 40 miles away and of course they did not have a replacement. The next closest one was 33 miles from there. So to avoid going without a phone, I made the drive. I was reading that they have made this problem public now, but they say it is a very low percentage. Just wanted to share.

Android documentation says that AsyncTask postExecute() is called on the UI thread. I was under the impression that postExecute() was called from the Thread where execute() was called : I have been using an AsyncTask in a background Service with its own thread, and postExecute() was called in the service thread, not the main thread. However, I recently had an issue with the postExecute() not being called at all, while an exception was thrown : " sending a message to a Handler on a dead thread". How is it exactly :
- shall AsyncTask be used ONLY from the main thread ?
- if not, in which thread postExecute() is supposed to be called : always the UI thread, or the execute() calling thread ?

I've switched from the Iphone 3G to the Eris 20 days ago. Android is sweet, but am feeling frustrated with the speed of the Eris. I upgraded to the rooted 2.1 in hopes of speeding things up, and it did for the most part, but it still lags when trying to make calls. Call quality is subpar on both ends, I had better call quality with ATT and the iphone. I am considering returning the phone to AmazonWireless if possible, do you think they would notice I installed 2.1? Will I get my new account activation upgrade on a different phone (Incredible or N1). I plan on activating an old phone until one of those comes out, then using my upgrade discount on that. Worst case is I'd have to sell it on ebay and buy an unlocked version.

I have a simple task (simple in other platforms, not in Android :-( ): take a photo and return its pathname to the caller. I searched a lot the net and tried many variants to the code. I'm aware of the "thumbnail image" bug and am trying to bypass it. The following code works, but its somewhat dificult to get the photo: the guy has to go to the media picker, click menu button, select "camera capture", take the photo, click back, and finally select the photo from the list. The good thing: the photo returned is BIG.
Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_GET_CONTENT); intent.setType("image/*");
startActivityForResult(intent, TAKE_PHOTO);
protected void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent data) {
switch (requestCode) { case TAKE_PHOTO: if (resultCode == RESULT_OK)
try { Uri uri = data.getData(); java.io.InputStream is = getContentResolver().openInputStream(uri);
java.io.FileOutputStream os = new java.io.FileOutputStream(targetPhotoName);
byte[] buf = new byte[4096]; int r; while ((r = is.read(buf)) > 0) os.write(buf,0,r);
is.close(); os.close(); Launcher4A.pictureTaken(0,null);
} catch (Exception e) { String stack = Log.getStackTraceString(e);
AndroidUtils.debug(stack); } break; }
I also saw a code that (in theory) would do exactly what I need:
sourcePhotoName = Environment.getExternalStorageDirectory() + java.io.File.separator + "tmpPhoto.jpg"; targetPhotoName = s;
Intent i = new Intent(android.provider.MediaStore.ACTION_IMAGE_CAPTURE);
Uri uri = Uri.fromFile(new java.io.File(sourcePhotoName));
i.putExtra(android.provider.MediaStore.EXTRA_OUTPUT, uri);
startActivityForResult(i, TAKE_PHOTO);
protected void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent data)
{ switch (requestCode) { case TAKE_PHOTO: if (resultCode == RESULT_OK)
try { java.io.InputStream is = new FileInputStream(sourcePhotoName);
java.io.FileOutputStream os = new java.io.FileOutputStream(targetPhotoName);
byte[] buf = new byte[4096]; int r; while ((r = is.read(buf)) > 0) os.write(buf,0,r);
is.close(); os.close(); } catch (Exception e) {
String stack = Log.getStackTraceString(e); AndroidUtils.debug(stack);
} break; } }
It works (almost) as expected: the camera application is shown, and after the photo is taken, the photo is returned to the application. However, it has two problems:
1. If I pass a folder inside my application's directory, when I press "done" button, the camera application does not return; it stays in the same screen until I press cancel. Seems that the camera application does not have permissions to write to my folder.
2. The image returned from this code is the Small Image (Thumbnail).
So, I now have a code that works and return a big image, but is somewhat burocratic to the guy to use (and also can lead to errors, if he selects the wrong picture), and a code that does what i want but returns a small picture. I'm using a HTC G2 with Android 1.6, and I have to use it because 1.6 is the requirement for my system. Ok, now the question: is there something I can do in code #2 to make it return the big picture?
