View 3 RepliesI would like to write a graphical application for an Android phone that displays a level bar, which changes depending on the phone's accelerometer sensor.Where would be the best place to get started in learning about writing programs for the Android? Specifically, I would need to know:
What programming language should I use?
What graphical toolkit would be quick for a new programmer to use?
Where should I look to find information about receiving accelerometer data?
What starter books on Android development would you recommend?
I just copied all necessary files from rom I wana port and made the system folder and I have the boot img and updater script. All I need is a tool to manage the rest. I used to have one but now I can't find it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedThe whole idea of the EVO 4G is being able to take advantage of the faster speed for internet/videos/applications etc. Looking at the intended coverage map for the next year or so it doesn't appear the 4G network will cover my home area. While the network will be in the NYC area sooner than later, I only spend 25 hours a week in the city, and when I get home I won't be able to take advantage of the EVO network. It remains to be seen how long it will take Sprint to roll out this network to other cities in the surrounding suburbian areas.Correct me if I'm wrong but, if the device doesn't connect with the 4G network, it defaults to a 3G network? If that's the case, then switching to a device with limited usage for me personally doesn't make sense until they get up and running in more areas, which I imagine will take at least 2 years.
View 6 Replies View RelatedHaving just moved to an Android 2.1u1 HTC Desire from an Android 1.5 HTC Hero, I've noticed that there a weird behaviour from TabWidget in that it shows a thick white line under the tabs instead of what I think it should do. Difficult to explain so here are two URLs: http://android.esstec.co.uk/images/how_it_should_be.png http://android.esstec.co.uk/images/what_it_is.png Initially the tabwidget looks like the first picture but when you do anything with it (change tabs for example), it looks like the second. These screenshots are from the Google provided API demos so I don't think it's my code, but I wanted to paste here before filing a bug. Anyone got any ideas?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using Eclipse Helios Service Release 2 and the project target is 2.2.
I have a xml layout that has a HorizontalScrollView and ScrollView with a LinearLayout. For some reason unknown to me the graphical layout will not expand when I add objects that exceed the size of the default screen size.
I have other xml layout files that will expand when using a single scrollview type, however when using two of them nested together it does not work.
I have attempted to use ScrollView then HorizontalScrollView and reversed to see if it is a order of priority issue with Eclipse. However this does not work.
There appears to be nothing missing from the properties of the scrollviews between those that will expand and the one that wont.
Is there something I am missing? Or is it not possible to have two different scrollview types in one layout and still have a auto expanding graphical layout editor? I would rather not define a specific screen resolution that would allow me to see all objects; I want the app to be adaptable to any device screen size.
Along with Android being 'open', what about some standardized form factors? Would this help the 3rd party market peripherials? I hope Google, with the Nexy, keeps the form factor so that the Nexy 2 will be the same. That way we get more, and possibly more interesting devices from 3rd parties. Not sure if form factor is the right term to use.
View 13 Replies View Relatedremoving the g factor from accelerometer readings. I am using SensorEventListener with onSensorChanged() method for getting Sensor.TYPE_ACCELEROMETER data. I need only pure acceleration values in all directions. So at any state if the device is stable (or in constant speed), it should give (0.0,0.0,0.0) roughly.
Currently, depending on its pitch and roll, it gives me variable output depending on the g forces acting on each axis. I hope there is some formula to remove this, as I also get orientation values (pitch and roll) from Sensor.TYPE_ORIENTATION listener. I had used some but didn't work.
I have lot of markers on my map. Zooming in each marker shows me a position. but zooming out the markers are overlapping each other and it is more difficult do determine the position of a marker.
Is there a way to scale the marker image depending on the zoom factor?
I was wondering if it is possible for me to create my own customized factory image with apps I hate removed and new ones added that I like so when I do a factory reset it restores the phone to the image I created, not the one that comes from the factory ?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a project which I want to split into a paid and a free version. I do not care to double my management of the res/ folder and would even like the Android Manifest.xml to be the same file except for the package line. Worrying little about hacking (at this stage - my app is not copy protected anyhow so other avenues of vulnerability are already open), it might be sufficient for me to have all the logic in the free app, and to enable/disable functions based on the app's own package info. What strategies have others used in this regard? I have soft-linked the source from a new Android Eclipse project folder tree to the existing one (the new is to become the paid version and the old one will become the free one with some logic paths being conditionally stubbed at runtime), reserving the new source file hierarchy in the new one to the sole purpose of containing an My Main Activity.java file (as it will need to be in a different package- folder than the one for the free app's). But the res folder appears as though it might be more difficult.

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy apps are functionally good, and in my time learning android I have covered most features. But one thing my apps lack is graphical coolness... you know the type of thing the top branded apps have, and particularly those from the iPhone which are always very impressive. I want to improve my graphical skills for layouts, menus, galleries, interactive buttons - the kind of stuff that makes your apps look great, as well as performing well.

I just bought a new HTC Desire here in Korea. wonderful game rating system, Google decided to eliminate all of their games in Korea. I haven't even had the chance to play a single one. Since Market is tied with phone provider (or current location?), has anyone heard of a way around this? Is there a way to download games directly to a PC?
View 10 Replies View RelatedDon't get me wrong, I didn't get a desire for gaming (i think we have got a long way to go before Android is a viable gaming platform), but I am sometimes surprised by the Desire's inability to run some games properly. Snapdragon processors seem very good at number crunching, but struggle with graphics. Look at the Quake 2 comparison of the Galaxy S and the Desire. of course, the Galaxy S is going to win, but I was surprised just how bad the Desire game out. can't have been more than 3-5 frames per second. I have seen this in other areas to, like the recent Sims 3 conversion for Snapdragon processors. Again, once things get a bit busy on the screen, the snapdragon simply starts to drop a ton of frames. So, are we seeing devs not optimising games for snapdragon processors? Or are snapdragons simply no good for games? That said, raging thunder 2 runs quite well. Like I said, this is more out of interest than anything else. Really like the Desire and never intended to do much 3d gaming on it, but some early results have been a little disappointing.

Any good games on the market place? What are people's favorite games to play on the desire.and I'm not really talking including emulators, just android games from the market.
View 14 Replies View RelatedRecently really enjoyed playing Replica island on Desire, no real problems or bugs. Had to use tilt to move the Android as the original control poor.
Question: Anything similar out there also for free? Retro 2D platform game.
For reasosns I can't figure out, some of the high end GL games aren't available for the Desire, even though it's a high end phone.I'm thinking of Modern Combat Sandstorm, NOVA, Assasins Creed.I know some people with the Desire have these, and I'd LOVE to know how they got them, as I cant even get ones acquired from less savoury sources to work. The way I see it, is they're all Android games, so if I was to purchase one for the Galexy S, would it still work on the Desire? Or is there something in the coding that makes them phone specific?
