HTC Desire :: Email Received But Not Sent When WiFi Out Of Range
Aug 31, 2010
Did a search but couldn't see a solution. I have 3 email accounts set up. All of them work for both send and receive while connected to any WiFi. However, when not in range of WiFi I can receive emails but not send.

When I'm home I have my WiFi on the entire time, but I was wondering when I get an email does it get sent to my phone through my WiFi connection or does it still get sent from the cell tower? I'm assuming that texts get sent solely through the cell towers but since email is web based could it or does it come through wifi if its on?

It's done this twice now (before and after factory reset). 2.1 OTA, not rooted.
Whenever I turn on the wifi, or I become in range of my WPA2 network, it doesn't always connect. I say "always" because it seems to be random. If I toggle wifi on or off, it doesn't always connect. Sometimes it connects after 30+ seconds. Every other device connects just fine.
The only sure way to get it to connect is to force it to rescan, usually by going to Settings and displaying all SSIDs in range. THEN it connects, always and immediately.
The even sillier thing is, it will alert me of open networks, but never connect to my own saved network.

Not sure if any of you guys have the same problem but when I leave my Wifi on all day, and return home from work, my home Wifi never picks back up. When I toggle my Wifi on and off, it picks up again. My signal is always above 1 bar when on Wifi in my house, it just does NOT automatically connect anymore.

I am initiating the design of an application that would require an Android phone to connect to another Android phone via Ad-Hoc networking with or w/o security. I would like to know if Android supports ad-hoc networking. I would also like to know what is the average range of the wifi signal from an Android handset point-to-point with no obstructions. I cannot find any information about this on the web.

I got the Hero on 3UK yesterday. As soon as I booted it up it found a number of wireless networks and I was able to connect to my BeBox with no problems. Later on last night and continuing today, it can't find any networks in range. It shows the BeBox as 'remembered' but not in range. Even tho I'm obviously sitting near it. I've rebooted the phone today and no change. I installed the Fonera application yesterday and thought it might be causing problems so disabled it and still the problem was there.

Quick background, I am still on a $30/month SERO plan with my Touch Pro 2 and waiting to get a $10/24 month discount but Sprint has put a halt to all discounts for the time being, so I'm going to try when the iPhone 4 comes out and when Verizon gets their Droid X. I was going to sell my EVO but it seems I might as well keep it since I'm going to eventually use it.
So in the meantime, I'm going to hold onto the TP2/SERO and use the EVO when I am within a WiFi network. Thing is sometimes I want to bring the EVO out, so I thought maybe I could open up a WiFi hotspot with HTC's Wifi-Router software and connect to it with the EVO. But the EVO isn't recognizing the WiFi hotspot. My laptop can recognize it though. I tried to add the WiFi network but it'll say "Not in range, remembered".

I have a droid and the range I get with wifi compared to a laptop is horrible. The networks I have tested on are all 802.11g. Is this just normal because of the antenna size on the droid or is there something I can do to improve it? I feel like I have to be right next to the access point to have a good connection.

I realize that it would probably require boosting antenna power and thus reduce battery life but, if I am prepared to accept that, can I programatically extend wifi range?

I recently bought Zync Z930 7" Android tablet. Everything is working fine, except for the WiFi. My router is Belkin G Wireless 40961F. The tablet finds the WiFi and connects to it and works flawlessly. But as soon as I move to upstairs, the connection is lost and it says Wifi Not in Range. I tried changing the pass from WPA to WEP and finally no password at all. Now the connection stays for more time. I tried putting "Keep On Wifi " to " Never (increases data usage) " . The connection says " Good Signal Strength ", but it keeps flashing between "Connecting " and "saved" .
Do I need to contact the vendor ? as I bought it from Ebay, I need to return it ASAP if its a hardware problem. BtW, it says the tab runs on a custom ROM.

I've checked the various forums and it appears that others have the same issue as I do. Basically, when I am connected to WiFi, I cannot send emails. When not connected to WiFi, I can send emails. This is a case for my email account with Shaw Cable (my home Internet provider). I have no problems sending emails from my Hotmail account on WiFi or not. The reason appears to be that my wireless carrier, Bell Canada, does not allow me to use my home Internet provider's (Shaw Cable) SMTP server to send emails. If I am on WiFi on my home email, I can send emails via Shaw's SMTP server. If I am not on WiFi, I have to use my wireless carrier's (Bell) SMTP server to send emails.
However, If I do this, when I use my WiFi at home, Shaw does not allow me to use Bell's SMTP server to send emails. The way I can always send emails where ever I am is if my email app only uses my wireless carrier to send emails. The email app on my phone, the Desire Z, will always use WiFi if it is available. Only if WiFi is not available will it use my wireless carrier. I cannot seem to find a way to force my email app to only use my wireless carrier. If someone figured out otherwise, please let me know. I have recently switched to an HTC Desire Z from a Nokia N97. When I had the N97 (which runs Symbian), I have always been able to send and receive email where ever I am. For web browsing, it uses WiFi if it is available and switches to my wireless carrier if not.
I am very disappointed that it appears the Desire Z is not able to do the same (unless there is a way and I just haven't figured it out). I have managed to figure out a workaround to my situation. If I send an email from my home, I will simply turn off WiFi. After sending my email, I'll turn WiFi back on. Although this works, this is just really combersome. Even though I'm at home, I do not always have my PC on to send emails and I am not going to wait several minutes for my PC to turn on so I can send an email. If it is a short email, I would rather reply via my phone rather than turn on my computer. Although manually toggling WiFi for sending emails is not too combersome, my expectation from a smartphone as advanced as the Desire Z is that I do not have to do that.

I am having some difficulties with syncing my Shaw Cable email account while not on WiFi. If I'm on a WiFi network, I have no difficulties with email. However,I noticed that when I'm away from my WiFi network at home, I cannot sync with this email account. I get a "Network error" alert.
With Hotmail, I have no difficulties at all. My Hotmail account is able to sync where ever I go whether on or off WiFi. I'm currently with Bell (Canada). I used to own a Nokia N97 and had no difficulties with Shaw on that phone.

My cctv dvr comes with an android app that I can use to view cctv cameras.
The dvr is configured to send an email when it detects motion.
What I'm struggling with is trying to figure out how to launch the cctv android app when an email arrives, and then after a set time (e.g. 30secs) to stop the application or put it to sleep.
The idea is that I will have a number of android tablets on the wall in various rooms, and they will come on and off automatically when motion is detected outside.
Is it possible to achieve this? Is there an app that can look out for the email notification and then launch a 3rd party app i.e. the cctv app, and then after a preset time shut it down. (I think if the cctv app is left running in the background, the streaming is still continuing and drains battery and eats data.)

Did a search, didn't find what I'm looking for. I have only one email account, a gmail account, set up on my Eris. I would have my Yahoo set up as well, but for some reason it says my account info is wrong. Anyway, I get 1 notification for each of the email systems in the phone. 1 seems to be through HTC or a widget or something, 1 is the gmail app or whatever it's called. I've only had this phone for 3 days, and I love it. If it's any help, I'd like to only use the htc one as the keyboard seems more responsive as far as the auto-correction goes, and the layout is more simple and easier for me to read.

I just received an email notification that I starred the in the google complaint section as regards too the lag since updating to 2.01. I im sure why I would just now get a response about this considering I posted over a month ago.
I guess its just wishful thinking on my part that they might actually be coming out with a fix finally, or better yet 2.1.

Ok, I have 2 accounts on my X - one is a Gmail that I rarely use, and the other is a hotmail account which is frequently used.
I'm coming from Black Berry and I kinda understand that the mail is delivered differently but ever since I set up my hotmail I've received 3 sets of the same messages, read or un-read. Now every time this has happened there has been 1 new unread message, so I assume its when my X syncs with the server. Is there something I can change, or should have done during setup? I'm using the stock email app.
Thank you in advance! this is really my only complaint so far with this nice phone and hope its my user error.

The facebook messenger app for my Samsung Galaxy Fame only receives notifications of messages when connected to a mobile data network, not when connected to wifi. If I swap to solely using mobile data after a conversation, I receive a string of notifications of all the messages I've just been sent in the conversation which is very frustrating.

I have had many occasions where I haven't received sms from friends. I have a HTC desire with Telstra and I have attempted to resolve the issue starting with the provider. I turned the phone off and on, replaced the SIM card through the provider, attempted to send myself sms to which I received them straight away. I escalated the issue to the level 2 tech support team whereby they reset the network settings on the network side and then followed the above steps again. They came to the conclusion that it was a handset issue. They transferred me to a HTC department whereby I spoke to someone about this issue, and they asked me my initiative to resolving the issue. On top of my encounter with Telstra, I have reset the phone to its original settings, updated the firmware to the latest (1.25xxxxx) aka the Telstra ROM, synced the phone to the pc too.
To continue with the HTC department conversation, he had said to me that if I have done all the above, its a Telstra network issue! I never mentioned to either department that I actually work for Telstra because I assumed they would treat me like an idiot, so I am aware of all the procedures both the company and manufacturer take when dealing with this type of issue, they really handball around until the consumer gives up. In this case my final resort was this forum, to which I sadly am trying the uninstall of chompsms even tho the logic behind how these sms apps work would in my view make no difference to the phone not receiving a message, but I'll try anyway (in addition, I also did all the above with handcent). I will see how this goes. Would anyone believe that the phone itself has the rare issue of going into a type of black state where it turns the network off intermittently? I really have no clue what to do, I am hoping that android 2.2 fixes this, or I may have to try n get HTC repaired even tho they will do all the above anyway.

I'm having to move networks from Virgin back to o2.
I'll be returning the Virgin Desire and just received the o2 Desire today.
Setting it up went well, accounts added etc. but I'm having trouble with the WiFi - I can't disable it, every time I do it switches itself back on - I'm assuming that's something to do with the o2 firmware and it wouldn't be a big deal if the WiFi worked properly
I set it to install all my apps, but wouldn't over Wifi, only over 3G, I can't browse the internet or check for software updates in settings... I've got 2 email accounts set up - Gmail & Exchange (just as I did on the other handset), and it's just told me it can't sync to the Exchange server now though it seems to have been fine so far...
Yet I've just sent myself a test email over WiFi successfully - it appeared straight away in the webmail and then back on the handset, so some part of it's working...
