HTC Desire :: Does Using GPS Require Data?
Sep 18, 2010
Pardon me if this sounds like a dumb question but does using the GPS on my phone require me to use up any data? I'm just curious because a car GPS does not require internet access.

I'm wondering if there is a good application for my droid that will use the GPS to get me around with a preloaded map database so that it doesn't rely on me having a data connection.
Edit: did some research, looks like osmand and mapdroyd are the best choices. Any user opinions on which is better and why?

Is there an app that doesn't require root which would allow me to backup the data of an app on one device and then restore it on another without having root?

I was looking at my upgrade options and total pricing with regard to the Captivate. When I added the phone as an upgrade, not only did it not make me choose a data plan, it didn't even give me a choice to pick a data plan (at the moment I have just minutes and texts). Is this an error on the ATT system or you can get the phone and the data plan is only set up once you use the phone?
Because what I am thinking is upgrading 2 lines on my family plan - my line with an iPhone which requires data when you purchase the phone, and the Samsung on the line that will not get Data. I will only use one phone (the Samsung on my line) and sell the iPhone brand new in box. Will that work or will ATT realize when I only have one phone in use on my plan even though I 'upgraded/renewed' two lines?

I just signed up for these forums because soon I will be an HTC Desire owner in Canada. Having never owned a smartphone before I do have a few questions. The plan I intend on signing up for is the Telus Student 40 and that will come with only 100mb of data. Now I don't see myself being too data using heavy so I feel like I will be able to live with it. However I do have some questions regarding my data consumption.
1. Is it possible to completely stop all data usage by somehow disabling the data connection if I find myself reaching my limit?
2. What are ways to track my data usage to make sure I don't use too much data?
3. What are good ways to conserve data usage? I'm getting the feeling that there are some applications that will constantly be sending data back and forth updating themselves, is it possible to have these applications but stop them from constantly updating and only have them update when I want to access the application?.........

If "always on mobile data" is disabled, will this have any affect on programs that are set to auto sync with back ground data enabled(Face book, twitter etc)? I'm trying to work it out but lots of people say different things?

My friend just lost his Desire at an airport. The pattern lock is active, but that does nothing but protect the data on the phone - Not SD. The first thing they would do is to switch the phone off and replace the sim.
Now here is my question : Is there an app that will send an sms to a preallocated number if the phone is booted up with a different sim? I know some Samsung phones can do this. But having an app that requires your own sim to be able to find it if stolen is quite pointless.

Android 2.3.6 uses API level 10 and that the minimum for tab views is API level 11...
Then why is it that my phone, STOCK Android 2.3.6, has tons of apps with tab views, and the tab views work?
So what's the deal because, I need the app I am developing to work on my phone (I'm mostly making it for myself anyway) so I need to use minimum API 10, but Eclipse won't let me use tab views unless I switch to minimum API of 11...

I've downloaded 2 different apps, 3g watchdog & netcounter which both show the amount of 3g data usage for the phone. Just yesterday, I managed to apparently use nearly 20mb of 3g data, although I was barely on the web. I must've checked my facebook a couple of times, read a few emails, and that was it. I've also installed a task manager app which closes all running apps, which I always use before locking the screen and putting the phone in my pocket. So as far as I know, there shouldn't be any apps running or using any data at all. It may be that push email may be using a bit, but surely not 20mb in one day?? It's also only one email account and the full html version of the email is never shown. I'm with Vodafone, and their supposedly "Unlimited" internet is capped at 500mb, which means at the rate that my phone is apparently going now, I would have maxed that out in a month hardly using the internet at all! I doubt that the data counter apps are wrong as they are both showing the same usage. They've both had really good reviews by other users as well. However, I find it extremely hard to believe that I used 20mb in one day when I only looked at possibly 3 web pages. The counters actually show that I used over 1mb after 30 mins, even when I wasn't running any apps.

I'd like to add widget support to my app, but I suppose that it'll take quite a while until 1.5 is globally rolled out. I assume that widget support means that I need to compile against 1.5 and set up the minSdkVersion to 3, so I'll effectively lock out anybody with 1.1. Other than adding a second version of the same app for 1.5, what's the best way to approach this? Wait a couple of months until 1.5 is globally spread? (Assuming that all carriers even decide to roll it out in the first place.)

I am new to the rooting scene, I can tell you all the apps that are needed for a jailbroken Iphone, but I don't know where to start when it comes to root. Yes I did a "root" search on the market, and I am so ignorant I don't know what the apps are for or capable of.I already know root explorer is a must, other than that I have nothing.

The race is on. Which first-generation Android phone will receive an upgrade to Android 2.1 first?
Many thought Sprint would lead off (with all the noise they made), but they have yet to produce. T-Mobile remains fairly quiet, but they could jump ahead to Android 2.2 since Google is in charge of the software for some of their phones.
Today we learn that Verizon has posted the details for the upcoming Android 2.1 upgrade of the Droid Eris. Customers will receive the update over the air (OTA), which is good so customers don't have to take their phone in to Verizon. Other carriers like Sprint will be release their upgrades over the wire.
Like we predicted, it appears the Android 2.1 upgrade will wipe the internal memory of the phone. Verizon warns customers that they will need to reinstall some applications, their contacts will be erased (don't worry, they are all synced in the clouds), and some phone settings will return to defaults.
The update is mandatory, so customers should start looking at apps to backup their apps (or just re download them from the Market).
No information was proved on when the OTA update would be available, so it could drop at any time. When Verizon released the information for the Droid 2.1 upgrade, it still took several weeks before they finally pushed it out (but they did have delays).
How do you feel about a software upgrade wiping your phone? I don't think it is that big a deal and it will benefit most customers by greatly speeding up their phone. However, I can also understand how many unknowing customers might accidentally delete some piece of data.
"You will need to reinstall applications."Details of Droid Eris 2.1 upgrade are listed below.Enhancements:Pinch-to-zoom is now available when using the Gallery and Google Maps.
New support for voice-to-text entry.
Whenever a text-entry box appears, simply tap the microphone icon on the virtual keyboard and speak.
New Gallery application with 3D layout. View and share photos taken with your phone and images from your online Picasa Web albums.
New Leap thumbnail view lets you pinch to jump between the seven panels on your home screen.
Additional calendar views and easier access to contacts make navigating even quicker.
Google Maps with Navigation provides free, traffic-enhanced, turn-by-turn navigation.
With the Enhanced Android Market, you'll enjoy a better browsing experience as well as even more applications, including Verizon Wireless content featuring self-service applications.
Ability to log onto and access multiple Google accounts at once.
Support for 19 Microsoft Exchange Server policies makes your phone more secure and business friendly.
Desk Clock intelligently dims your screen and displays the current time while charging.
Location-based cinematic full screen weather keeps you on top of changing conditions.
Improvements:
Free Yahoo! Mail is now supported—simply sign in with your Yahoo! email address and password.

What's the reason that a phone needs to be rooted in order to take screenshots? I'm almost in disbelief that something as simple as a screenshot app isn't available (or built-in!) for an unrooted phone. It just seems like such a normal thing to do.Is it possible that in the future an unrooted phone can have an app to do this, or is there something about Android itself that doesn't allow it?

AS per the question, how many of the HTC apps require you to be online to do anything? Like are they all weather, sat nav, or use the internet to show you locations, and such? I'm just wondering how many apps will require me to use GPRS when outside of a WiFi zone, which would be quite a lot of places really!

I was wondering if there are any poker (texas holdem hopefully) games out there that do not require you to be online and are not just heads up?
I want to have a game that I can play against various AI players offline. Mainly for traveling to work I use the underground tube a fair bit so no reception.

Why do Android screenshot utilities only work on rooted devices? Linux distributions and desktop environments provide user-space screen capture tools. Why can't Android? I wonder what are the technical issues, if any, that prevent this. The only user-space procedure I am aware of, i.e. installing about 1 GB worth of development tools on a PC, hooking it to an Android device via USB, and disabling some of its funzionality (e.g. SD card access), is not user-friendly.

I'm still on the stock FW that came with the phone. If I update to JH3, will it automatically format and reinstall (is it a full ROM) or is it just an update?
If it does format, is there a good app to backup my apps and such (would Titanium help or does that do a full restore including the OS?).
Also, does anyone know a good app to backup/restore/transfer SMS? At the AT&T store, they transfered all my texts from my BB to this phone in a couple minutes but forgot to ask what they used for it.

creating an app which requires root access.Purpose of this app
1) Able to access a file in root/data/data/*APP XYZ*/*THIS FILE*
2) Generate a random string of number
3) Replace the specific string in *THIS FILE* with the randomly generated number
4) Saves *This File*
Right now I can do it manually but it is rather tedious. Was thinking if it would be possible to create an app to do this automatically with one click.
