HTC Desire : BBC Formula One Online Stream For Practice
Jun 15, 2010
I'm very tempted by the Desire and while this wouldn't perhaps be a deal breaker, it might be a deal maker.
I like my F1 and if I'm out & about I'd like to watch the various live sessions over the weekend via the BBC website.
Can anyone with a Desire confirm whether the live streams for practice, Quali and the race work please? It uses flash so I'm hopeful.

I've found lots of tips and tricks, but not really the answer to what i am looking for. Should I be waiting until my phone is dead to charge, or simply charge when ever I want to maximize my battery life?

Found out today that Vodaphone in the UK were releasing a live timings app for "high end phones". It seems everything but Android is supported.New F1 season starts this weekend.Out of sheer desperation, I have tried to get the J2ME application to run on Android, using the instructions here:MicroEmu: Converting JavaME applications to the Android platform (revisited).I have it compiling, but the resulting app crashes when I try and run it on my HTC hero. (cupcake 1.5)I have uploaded the app here, incase someone with a newer device whats to see if it runs.

I remember seeing a tutorial a few months back that I cant seem to find anywhere Basically, theres a single EditText, Button, and TextView, and an onClickListener takes the formula that is entered into the EditText (Example: (5^12(6.3+12) / (12 * .01)) ) and it would calculate it and output the answer on the TextView.

When I am at home and want to connect to the net using wifi, my Desire connects to the network immediately and has excellent reception. But it can't go online with ANY of my programs, whether to check mail, download updates on the market or just surf. None of the other devices I use at home have any trouble getting online, so it isn't my router or connection (I think). And when I got to my office today, my phone instantly recognized the network here and can go online with no problems. I have had the phone for about two months now, and this problem is only a few days old. Before that I had no issues with this.

Just got a desire a couple weeks ago. My friend stream had been working fine for the first couple weeks then suddenly this weekend it wouldn't open up. Every time I try there is an error and I have had to force close. I tried uninstalling it but saw that wasn't an option.

Had my Desire for about a month now, and am loving it, but have run into a problem over the last week or so. My friend stream app has stopped working. The widget will never refresh, and whenever I try and go into it an error: "The application Friend Stream (process com.htc.friendstream) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again" just keeps popping up, and I have no choice but to force close. I've been hearing rumours it could be another app I've installed that's causing it.

Is it possible to sync my phone contacts manually with FB instead of FB dragging my entire friends list into my phone? Also, does anyone have a problem with Friend Stream not updating automatically (I have it set at every one hour).

I am having a problem with the Friend Stream widget. It seems that one of my FB friends does not appear on Friend Stream. I do not see any of her updates. I can only see her FB updates when I use the FB app. I cannot see her in my list of FB friends in Friend Stream either. It seems to not be updating properly on the people widget either. Tried to resync. I even tried deleting my FB account in Friend Stream and adding it back in. This only happened with this one friend. I use to be able to see her updates, but she seemed to have disappeared from Friend Stream a couple of days ago.

I got an HTC Desire recently which I haven't rooted yet or made any major modifications to. For a few weeks, the Friend Stream widget was working fine but now it is broken. It doesn't show any updates ("no recent updates") and if I click on the arrow in the top right corner (which I think takes you to the full Friend Stream app?), it thinks for a while and then I receive a message that process com.htc.friendstream has stopped unexpectedly. Is there any way to get this working again? Are there any logs anywhere that could point me to what is causing the process to crash?

Are there any free apps out there that play live streams I.E audio or video when clicking on a link while surfing the Internet on the htc desire? I'm trying to listen to an Internet radio stream that isn't listed in all those android apps that you can download like XiiaLive Lite. On the PC you would go to the radio station website and click on the listen now link and windows media player or realplayer would pop up and play the stream. Is there anything similar on android that just plays the link?

I've set my Friendstream to update every hour, and this was working fine for weeks. Recently, although it's still refreshing the sync time icon at the bottom every hour, it's not actually updating the widget with the new information. It takes a manual sync for it to refresh. Auto-sync is on, background data is enabled.

I have connected my HTC Desire to a samba share where I have my music, movies, etc, but I cannot make Desire play any of the mp3, movies, and I cannot see any photos either? I am using Astro File Manager.
I get no kind of error messages just a black screen with a little icon (which I don't remember right now.) Anyone got an idea of what could be wrong?

Recently dived into the Android world, buying myself a HTC desire about 2 weeks ago.
So far, I love the setup, features and feel, the only thing I'm a little worried about is a little bit of lag.
I know the phone is renown for its processor speed and RAM, but scrolling through things like my SMS threads, the application list, and Friend Stream it is a bit 'jittery' and a little laggy. Every now and then an application like Facebook or the SMS application will crash on me. And I know I'm a rather fast texter, but when I'm texting sometimes the phone cannot quite keep up with what I'm writing.
I have no unusual applications installed and do not use task killers.
Is this normal? Or might there be some reason why its functioning a little slower than it should.

I have a sizable install base already on some apps with Android 1.5 set as the minimum version. I want to update the apps to take advantage of some of the newer features offered in Android 2.0 and greater. What is the best way forward so I don't break things for my current 1.5 and 1.6 users?
If I simply update the application with a new min SDK version, will 1.5 and 1.6 users be prompted to uninstall? Or will they just not see the update? What about future development that I want to apply for everyone, say a bugfix. Will I have painted myself into a corner? Another solution would be to fork and create a new app for 2.0 users, but that is undesirable for several reasons.

I have had my Desire no for almost 2 months, and like most I have tried installing and uninstalling many apps, to see what I like.Due to doing a factory reset on my phone yesterday I have layered back all the apps I was using and have noticed that I have used considerably less memory than before, making me very suspicious of the uninstall method used within the market place.Does it leave behind pieces of the app, and if so what's the cleanest method of uninstalling apps.

I've been scouring the web looking for information on setting up a peer-to-peer connection between Android handsets and so far have drawn a blank. The only thing I can definitively seem to work out is that it was made a whole lot more difficult when XMPP was removed from 1.0. Apart from that, I find a couple of threads on an OpenIntents board about porting an XMPP implementation to Android that were last posted nearly 2 years ago. Has anybody solved this problem effectively? What's the best way of doing it (from a games point of view)?

I'm writing an application where real-time knowledge of the GPS state is critical to convey to the user. I request GPS updates at 1000 ms intervals -- when I haven't received another update 1500 ms past the most recent update, I want to display a yellow icon, and 5000 ms after the most recent update I want to display a red icon. Currently, I'm doing it like this: private CountDownTimer gpstimeout; public void onLocationChanged(Location location) { if (gpstimeout != null) gpstimeout.cancel(); gpstimeout = new CountDownTimer(5000, 1500) { public void onTick(long m) { setYellow(); } public void onFinish() { setRed(); } }; gpstimeout.start(); }

What is considered "best practice" when executing queries on a SQLite db within an Android app? Is it safe to run inserts, deletes and select queries from an AsyncTask's doInBackground ? Or should I use the UI Thread? I suppose that db queries can be "heavy" and should not use the UI thread as it can lock up the app - resulting in an ANR. If I have several AsyncTasks, should they share a connection or should they open a connection each?

I'm new to developing Android applications, and have only a little experience with Java in school. I was redirected to StackOverflow from the Google groups page when I was looking for the Android Beginners group. I have a question about what is best practice to pull content from a web source and parse it. Firstly, I would eventually like to have my application threaded (by use of Handler?), however, my issue now is that the class I have created (Server) to connect and fetch content often fails to retrieve the content, which causes my JSON parser class (JSONParser) to fail, and my View to display nothing. After navigating to the previous Activity, and attempting to call the connect(), fetch(), and parse() methods on the same remote URI, it will work. Why does this (sometimes retrieve the remote data) happen sometimes, but not always? What is the best practice, including the use of ProgressDialog and the internal Handler class, to make my application seemless to the user. Is this the best place to ask this question?

I am creating a database driven app for managing people. I am showing a list of people with each name in a TextView. When a TextView is clicked, I launch a new intent to show the detail for the person. My question: What's the best practices for passing the id of the person to the new intent? The TextView is displaying the name of the person, so how do I know the id of the person? Once I know the id, I know how to pass it to the new intent, but I don't know what the best way to associate the id of the person to the TextView. Is there a best practice for this?
