Picking up a used Aria for the wife. She does not have a data plan (pay per use only). Is there an app that turns off data ? She uses wifi for data. If the data is turned off will the picture messaging still work?

Got my phone a couple weeks ago and absolutely love it! Problem is I'm playing with it too much and already got a text saying I am at 65% of my data usage plan well before the billing cycle will be complete. How can I turn off completely/minimize the data stream? So far I've done (Home> All programs Tab> Wireless & networks and uncheck the box for Mobile Networks) and (Settings> Accounts and Sync> Background data "Applications can sync, send, and receive data at any time"). I wanna just be able to use it at WiFi spots so I don't accrue any fees.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm a noob and this is my first phone with a data plan. I installed 3G watchdog and I see the usage going up even though I haven't done anything through the 3g network. I've done my app downloads and surfing via Wi-Fi and as the phone sits idle the usage creeps up ever so slightly. Is this from the phone updating and considered normal? The usage is about 1mb per day so after a month that's 30mb. Is something running in the background that shouldn't be and if so how do I find it?

I'm making an Android Java app game (although this question applies to all languages really) and hope to release the first version soon. I'm nervous about how I save data in my game. My problem is that, if in a later update, I decide to store more data or store the same data in a different way, I need to be careful I don't lose or corrupt data for users that upgrade (i.e. I want users to be able to use data created by an old version in the new version, like their high scores from before).For example, say I want to save high scores in version 1.

View 5 Replies View Relatedto start with I've gone through the entire notepad tutorial, I'm a professional game programmer who has some extra time. (though most of my time has been in C++, I did take a year or two of Java classes in college, and remember some of it). I'm not sure the site is a good site to ask questions like this.. If someone has a Forum that might be a good place to ask these newbie questions, please feel free to point me in the direction. I've examined a few of the samples, and think I've a grasp of what I want to do. I've a three to four project plan for some Android releases to sharpen my skills, but since this is my first project and I have never really developed for a mobile phone or the android before, I'd like to make sure I have a solid plan.The first project is an example of the license plate game, however I want to do a few things to change it. Heck maybe when I'm done it'll become a bingo style game, with bluetooth connectivity, you never know. The base idea is I want to offer a list of states, with checkboxes next to them. so to do this, I'll be starting with a Linear List layout similar to the note pad example, and then have a row that is only a Checkbox. I can use text and call strike through if it's been checked off. Perhaps offer an option to not show them if they are checked.
But I want the list to be generated from a set of lists. Maybe all of America's states, maybe reasonable American states (no Hawaii, no Alaska) maybe a North American list, (add in Mexico and some Canadian provinces), a European list, who knows. I'd probably have to have a pop up window that lists all of the lists I suppose using a radiogroup of some sort. So then as far as the data, after weighing options I think best solution is to make a database with two fields, "checked" and "name".I figure I can use the menu for most of the user interaction (aside from clicking on stuff we want to check off) with maybe a few context menu items, I understand how to make all of those already so I should be good. The question I have is what is the best way to populate the lists? Should I create raw data, and have different files for all the lists? Or is there some other way to do this? I've seen this done on the searchable dictionary, but I'd like to hear what people who have actually generated the data like this before. In addition is there an easy way to look at the sql database these applications create, or do you have to run searches on them and output the data? Finally any other suggestion or advice? I definitely want to try to get something like this on the market so I can see the full life cycle and see if anyone actually likes it. (luckily there's not a plethora of them already) but I also want a few people to look over my code if they're willing when I'm done to make sure I've done this right or at least not missing any basic mistakes.

He wants an android phone he can swap his sim card into while not at work. He has neither a data plan or a texting plan because he doesn't use them. He's considering an unlocked Legend or N1 if he can find an app/widget that will disable the data network radios on his phone, so he can only use the wifi. Would this work, or are there better apps/widgets you guys know of?

I have a lot of stuff on autosync and i know i can turn that off using the power control widget but it seems that doesnt stop ALL data from transferring. Is there an app or a way i can turn off All DATA while still keeping voice calling as an option?

My LG G2X is running CM7 (but beautifully skinned for ICS!) and turning off Background Data gives me a 30% improvement in battery life and eliminates most of those annoying status bar advertisements. I really REALLY don't like the privacy vulnerability of my phone checking in with Google Play in the background. For example, occasionally when I check Google Play, my desktop icon for Bing suddenly "disappears" (gasp!)
Meanwhile my Galaxy Tab is running JB and maintains a constant connection with Play. I get regular notifications demanding that I update my apps. And guess what - on my Galaxy Tab my desktop icon for Bing sometimes disappears on it's own! :P
There is an option to restrict background data, but you need to set a data limit, you get an annoying alert in the status bar - and it doesn't work (restrict <> disable)!
I sync nothing with Google and want my privacy.
I would like the ability to turn off my data connection but still get phone calls and text messages. Is this possible?

Since doing so, I have noticed that the data turns itself on every so often.I normally use the htc widget to turn on/off the mobile data as I don't use it while at work/at home. Occaisionally, I notice that it is switched on and when I try to switch it back off, it restarts itself. I've noticed this on quite a few days now over the last couple of weeks and once it starts doing it, I can't stop it.I can only think it is down to either some app that I have installed or the synch settings, but I have checked for running processes and killed anything that looks like one of my apps.I don't really know what else to do to stop it. Has anyone got any ideas?

I'm currently using the free version of Juice Defender. I'm not sure if your phone should be set with mobile data switched on or off while using Juice Defender. Does JD turn data on and then off with the phone set to off to start with, or should the phone be set to data on, so that JD can manage data access according to the chosen schedule?
