General :: How To Turn Off BACKGROUND DATA On ICS And JB
Oct 27, 2013
Any reliable way to turn off Background Data on ICS and JB?
My LG G2X is running CM7 (but beautifully skinned for ICS!) and turning off Background Data gives me a 30% improvement in battery life and eliminates most of those annoying status bar advertisements. I really REALLY don't like the privacy vulnerability of my phone checking in with Google Play in the background. For example, occasionally when I check Google Play, my desktop icon for Bing suddenly "disappears" (gasp!)
Meanwhile my Galaxy Tab is running JB and maintains a constant connection with Play. I get regular notifications demanding that I update my apps. And guess what - on my Galaxy Tab my desktop icon for Bing sometimes disappears on it's own! :P
There is an option to restrict background data, but you need to set a data limit, you get an annoying alert in the status bar - and it doesn't work (restrict <> disable)!
I sync nothing with Google and want my privacy.

I'm trying to limit my mobile data usage with out jumping through hoops.
I'm looking for a widget, that with one click of a button, it can restrict background data, disable auto-sync and enable mobile data, and when pressed again, enable WiFi, disable background restriction and enable auto-sync.
This function, no matter how trivial, would save time and effort.
Is there anything like this out there? Would something like this require root?

So we all know that turning off background data is a massive battery saver. What I want to know is WHY? As in, what apps are doing what and when to use so much data. What app can I use to log this kind of data usage?

i seem to be having battery life problems because of mobile data, it sis constantly on because of the apps that use the internet while in the background. Therefore my phone is constantly using 3G and wastes heaps of battery. how to restrict background data so no apps will be using the mobile data? don't tell me to use task killer because task killers constantly use data as well and if u kill an app, it just comes back.

I'm looking for an App which allows efficient control of the 'Restrict background data' checkbox on a per-App Basis.
In ICS today I can navigate
Settings -> Data Usage -> "someAPP"
And then check/uncheck the 'Restrict background data' checkbox to make the data traffic explicit for me: If I don't use "someAPP" I can expect that there is no background data traffic generated by "someAPP" (no extra cost in roaming mode).
I do have some apps (e.g. a pushmail app for company mails) which I always want to allow the use of background data in order to get my mail.
Other's (e.g. use of gmail, G+, etc.) I want to toggle the behaviour very quickly:
If I'm in 'roaming' mode: disable, if in my home-network with flat cost: enable.
This is the reason I can't use the 'Mobile Data' switch.
Today I navigate as shown above, which is cumbersome and likely to be incomplete. I think of an app, where you can compose a list of apps (from the installed ones) and enable/disable 'restrict background data' for apps on this list with one click.

On my Droid Razr I am using the "Power Control" Toggle Widget for my homepage...This widget can toggle Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, Background Data, and Brightness. I use this widget to conveniently switch off these features to conserve battery life. Every switch seems to work fine except for the Background Data...I am able to turn on Background Data but when trying to turn off Background Data with the widget, although it does appear to be turned off because the icon is no longer illuminated...when I manually go into Data settings, the Background Data is still checked on.... What is the reason why it is not turning off with the widget

I am using a MOTO X with android 4.4.2. The android OS has high background data usage only in cellular connection. There is no such issue in WIFI connection. I hav turned off auto backup, deleted Google+ and turned off all the syncs. Even after restricting background data the android os keeps using mobile data. I have done the factory reset once but even that didn't solve the problem.

is there any such app that would disable background apps while allowing me to use the app i need to use via data connection?

If "always on mobile data" is disabled, will this have any affect on programs that are set to auto sync with back ground data enabled(Face book, twitter etc)? I'm trying to work it out but lots of people say different things?

What is the difference between these two:Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks > Enable always-on mobile data
- Description: "Uses more power on some mobile networks"
- Message after disabling: "Attention: Disabling always on mobile data may cause connectivity problems in some applications. Please use the manual refresh feature in applications to update online data" Settings > Accounts & sync > Background data
- Seems to be the same as the 4th toggle in the Power Control widget
- Description: "Applications can sync, send, and receive data at any time"
- Message after disabling: "Attention: Disabling background data extends battery life and lowers data use. Some applications may still use the background data connection.".Disabling either one seems to extend battery life. I haven't figured our yet how they differentially affect push email, etc. Would someone kindly explain to me how these settings are different?

CYANOGEN ...STILL nothing on automatic turn data on/off to send MMS as in MIUI..
amazing no priority on this while MIUI has had this for over a year or longer..see all the messages (also many xda threads that ended in 4-5 responses each because no one had the answer)
[URL]...
If one has unlimited data and does not care about battery, then I understand why this would be low priority (or not doing mms much because of cost)..

I recently purchased a USED S4 Active, and I am having an unusual problem with it.
I will leave my house in the morning. ALl during my drive to work, my data does't work. It's on, it just doesn't have "4g" at the top, and I can't use the internet, etc. Toggling the data does not work, neither does resetting the phone. About the time I get to work (after about a 15 minute drive), my data pops back on.
Today, at work, my phone connected to a stray wifi connection (One that I have used before, so my phone remembered it) just for a minute or two. Once it disconnected from the wi-fi, my mobile data was gone. Just like when I leave my house: It was gone for about 15 minutes, just like before, and then just popped back on like everything was OK.
I don't THINK this is an issue with my particular phone, but if it is I need to know so I can return it. I've searched high and low, but no one else seems to have had this problem. So I figured I would turn to the best!
Model: Samsung Galaxy S4 Active
Android version: 4.2.2
AT&T phone, but unlocked and working under the T-Mobile network.

I do know that downloading on Wi-Fi is faster than using data (or so I've read). My question is if I start a download using data connection then turn Wi-Fi on will the download see the Wi-Fi and jump on that to speed up our do I have to start on Wi-Fi for it to use Wi-Fi?

I have a Tmobile rooted Samsung Galaxy S III, I was running a nightly Cyanogenmod 10 ROM. Yesterday there was an update for that rom and I downloaded it and installed it, everything was fine and running smoothly until some people started telling me that they were not able to reach me by phone. I tried checking what was wrong and I finally realized that whenever I have my mobile data on or while I am using it I don't receive voice calls. I tried looking everywhere for a way to fix this and I came across the ##DATA# code in which I could turn off the DDTM option but unfortunately my phone doesn't recognize that code.
this is the message I get every time I try to enter ##3282# code.
I thought that maybe something was wrong with the ROM itself so i decided to browse around here for one for my Tmobile samsung galaxy S 3 and I decided to install this one [ROM][4.2.2][RC1] LiquidSmooth ROMs - d2tmo - 2|14|13
after wiping data/cache and dalvik cache I installed this ROM and this is my current phone info and still when I am using my mobile data I cant receive calls nor put the ##DATA# code to turn off DDTM.
is there any other way I could access that DDTM option?
Another thing I realized is that even tho I did the factory reset, wipe dalvik cache and data cache on recovery mode my phone still says it only has 4gb free on its internal memory, isn't it supposed to be completely free after wiping all that stuff?

Mobile phone. I bought it year and a half ago, and have changed operating systems few times (custom roms). Now I have Pristine JB Slim custom ROM, i have installed it 1-2 months ago (cant remember exactly), and everything was okay for first half period, but then it started to crush after mobile data/wifi was turned on.
When I turn on MD/WIFi, its usually okay till 76% of battery, but then screen starts to blink for few seconds and turns off immediately after. When I turn it on again, it turns off again after 1-2 minutes, and sometimes even warns me that i have to charge it cause battery has only few % left (most of time just 1). And I have to charge it again to work normally (well, until it starts to go crazy again )
Before i start to install other roms again. So. Is it faulty battery, bad ROM or something else?

I'm using a ListView with a transparent background. It works fine in Android 1.5 & 1.6, but in Android 2.0 and later, the ListView background turns white while scrolling. I want it to stay transparent, just like in 1.5 & 1.6.
Does anyone know what's going on, or better yet, how I can get this working correctly?

I know this is one of the "tips" for battery life but what all does it affect (i.e. when does it need to be on to perform a function)? I tried it once and noticed I had to turn it back on to access the market, so I assumed that it would prevent ALL data like that, including web browsing and possibly mail. Is that correct, or does it just affect the market?

As everyone knows, turning 'background data' off saves a huge amount of power. My question is though, what does background data actually mean? I know market 'requires' it, and Qik seems to break if it's turned off. However, I have an app called SMSBackup which uploads your texts to Gmail as you send/receive them. It seems to work even though background data is switched off. How is this? Could someone tweak/re-write the market to not use background data?

New Samsung Moment owner here. I am coming from a Blackberry, and would like to receive my email as it comes. I've learned through the forums that turning off Background Data on the Momemt saves battery life. I've done that. I've also left the Auto Sync button checked (Gmail, Calendar, Contacts). However, my email never comes unless I physically go into Gmail and press refresh. I don't get it. While I love the many features of this phone, I am really missing my Blackeberry . Any suggestions, or is this just the way it is?

Luckily I have the "NetCounter" network traffic counter installed, so I monitor my data usage over the 3g/2g network. Recently I've discovered my usage have increased massively. According to the month graph I've jumped from average 8 MB/day to approx 40 MB/day and my habbits haven't changed! This morning when I woke up, and my phone has been idle all night, it had already used 7MB since midnight - without me using it. What kind of a background app/service downloads that much data? According to my netcounter it is almost 99% download and 1% upload.I have a 1gb/month dataplan which should be enough, but something is appearently abusing my Connection , and with 410MB used this month so far, it can't last all month this way.I can see which date more or less the cell usage have increased, but I honestly can't recall which programs I have installed around that point! So before I try randomly uninstalling programs, I would like to hear if there is any way I can see how the network usage is distributed between the apps, so I can find the sinners?

I just recently bought a Motorola Droid, and I was pretty shocked at how quickly the battery ran out of juice. I looked around on the net and found a tip that said to turn off the Background Data option, so I did that, but I find this to be a very convenient feature. I'm just wondering if there's some sort of app or widget that will let me quickly toggle the Background Data option on and off for a quick sync to push all of my stuff in whenever I want it.

I was trying to go to hotmail.com earlier because I like the to look at all my folders. Normally I'm setting on Background Data off due to being at my work and saving as much battery as possible. I've always been able to go to the webpage there. I just turned on Background Data again since I'll be home for the weekend and tried to go to the webpage and it showed a lock on the address bar and wouldn't load. Why would turning on Background Data not allow me to go to the page? Could it be something else?
