General :: Turn Old Android Phone Into Portable Gaming Device?
Dec 18, 2011
So I upgraded from my Droid X to an Galaxy Nexus. I have a perfectly good - freshly sbf'd Droid X that none of my family wants or needs so I'm thinking it could be a decent portable gaming device for my boys when we travel. Just toss it in the Otterbox and let em have at it.
I always see the iPhone folks talk about giving their kids their old iPhones to use as an iTouch and I'm thinking I'd like to do that with my DX if it's feasible.
I'm just not sure it would work as well. Can I simply create a new gmail acct to register it at when going thru the setup we we can download some free games from the Market? What about the phone activation process - can I just skip that?

I'm looking for a PND on which i can install android.
For example: http://www.medion.com/de/electronics/prod/MEDION%C2%AE+GoPal%C2%AE+P4440+EU/30010109A1?category=navigation_28&recId=&wt_mc=de.intern.m-shop.pro-pla.on-ma&wt_cc1=m-shop_topseller_navigation-2-links&wt_cc2=30010109A1&wt_cw=30.2.8&utm_source=Internetseite-intern&utm_medium=Kachel&utm_content=navigation_2-links&utm_campaign=Kategoriekachel-Hotspots&utm_term=30010109A1
I would like to install Android - not on a mobile phone, like it's commonly down - but on a navigation device. In doing so I want to completely remove the old operating system and replace it with Android. Is this even possible, provided the hardware matches Android's requirements, or are there other criteria to be aware of ?

I am developing apps using elipse Juno and I want to use my phone, Sony Xperia tipo, as my avd. I have connected it to the pc using the usb cable. However when I go to Window->Preferences->Android->SDK Location->Browse the phone does not show up.
As of today there are no specific usb drivers from the Sony website, just the pc companion.
Is there another way of running self developed apps on my phone? Preferably through the usb port.

since I have rooted my device (iMiTo AM801 running Android Gingerbread 2.3.1) I'm not anymore able to power off it properly.After pressing for some seconds the power button and after I confirm the message asking if I want to power off the device, it never actually turns off and I need to press the reset button.The problem is that quite often the reset button restart the device! after I start the procedure for normal turn off (pressing the power button for some seconds, and answering the confirmation message) in the background I see a a message appearing just in the bottom toolbar of Android, but I cannot see what is says as the power off message is a modal window.

I have Galaxy W but I noticed that the games have a little lag. That normal maybe because my phone is not dual core. But I have read that lot of people are complaining about lagging in games even if they have a phone with good specifications like Galaxy S2 & S3. I understood that this is from bad optimization for Android, cause the games are direct port from iOS.

I picked up the EVO 4G on Friday and like it thus far. However, the phone does not seem to recharge while using the phone or while playing games (I'm addicted to RoboDefender already ). Is this normal? I've only charged it from my workstation and laptop so far. Does the phone gain charge from the included USB adapter? Can I use a dual-lead USB cable to get charged on the laptop/workstation (cables with one data USB cable and one for power)?

I am planning to buy my son and daughter the new nexus 7 for for education purposes, they are 6 and 7 respectively, so their frontal lobe is not yet developed to make sound judgement. It is against both our family code and kyokushin oath to engage in sloth, and I certainly don't want to buy them a device that would do more damage and good.
I have discussed this with my wife that the only condition we going to buy to the tablet is that we can be sure that no gaming app ever can be installed. If I let my children sign in with their own gmail account into the nexus 7, is their parental control that I can set up that would notify me that gaming apps have been installed on their account or better block all game apps?
If all else fails, I'll just have to periodically check the tablets for gaming apps.

I have a Motorola Droid 4 Smart Phone and I would like to be able to access my Verbatim 500GB portable hard drive with it. I have tons of PDF books and other files I would love to access via my phone. I have purchase a 5000mah battery to plug the phone and hardrive into so power is mot a problem. Is there a proceedure for doing this or some kind of program I need??
I personally think this would be an awsome thing to be able to do. Espcially for any smart phone! Just think it would be like having access to your big computer off your phone. I keep my whole computer data on several portable hard drive. When I want access I just plug them into a computer. If I have a computer issue I very seldom loose my data. I have it all backed up on data dvd's and can always put it on another portable hard drive. I can take my whole computer data base any where and use any handy computer.

When I turn on my portable wifi hotspot in my LG Optimus 4x HD, and connect my other android phone on it, it connects but it cannot browse. But when I turn on the hotspot app of my other android phone (with the same sim card i used in my 4X) and connect my Optimus 4x, it connects and can browse the net. Ive tried some tethering apps but the same result.

After reading a great post in the forum I setup my HTC Inspire 4G phone to teather...it works great! I followed the same steps on my fiancee's Inspire 4G and it didn't work so well. When I click the Portable Wi-Fi hotspot box in Settings > Wireless & Networks it turns on the Wi-Fi...and it is detectable by other devices...but then it immediately and automatically turns off.
We have the same phone purchased on the same day and I used the same Access Point Name settings as detailed in the excellent Android Forum thread. I even deleted and re-created the Access Point to make sure I didn't mistype anything but the same Portable Wi-Fi turns on then immediately turns off problem exists.

This is technically a Win7 question, but much related to Android. On my older Android devices, when connected to PC via USB for file transfer, they would "mount" the SD card as a standard disk drive within Windows. On my newer Android devices, however, they instead connect the device to Windows as a "portable media player." This is fine, except for one thing which really irks me. Every time the portable media player director structure comes up, it is displayed as giant icons. If I change it to "list" or "detail" view within Windows, there are two big problems:
- it doesn't stick (i.e. I'll reconnect later and it will be back to giant icon view)
- it doesn't apply recursively to all subfolders
With regular Win7 file explorer (i.e. for disk drives), it is really easy to set a default folder view for all disk drives on the whole system, and it will stick forever, and apply to all subfolders on every drive. Is it possible to do the same thing with portable media players?

Just wondering I have the above phone, and ever since I bought it, I cant seem to configure my personal hotspot SSID and passcode, without it defaulting back to AndroidAP and default passcode I enter in my desired SSID and passode, click save, and if I go to conect on laptop it will come up ok, but only that one time. If I literally go straight back into the configuration of wifi hotspot, it has defaulted back to AndroidAP

Just saw the WP7 launch event via live blogging from WPcentral, and they said that 3D games like ilo and milo (which is like super mario 64/galaxy) runs very smoothly. If these WP7 phones have the 1GHz Qualcomm QSD8250 Snapdragon processors, then the Nexus One, HTC Desire, etc which have the same processor can run games of this quality at at the same speed right?

I'm looking for cross-platform social gaming platforms, essentially for high-scores and achievements but also for multi-player.
Basically I came across two solutions: - ScoreLoop (http://www.scoreloop.com): lots of features but is closed for new developers (temporarily?) - Casmul [url]: less features and looks a bit... amateur.

my android phone's power button stopped working a few weeks ago. It wasn't a big problem, but a few days ago, the battery died. Now it is turned off and I can't turn it on. When I put it in charge, it just shows the charging screen. The phone is a Winmax W8000 (Winmax is Bangladeshi company. I'm from Bangladesh). It runs on Jellybean (4.1). It wasn't rooted. I tried to get into Download mode, but pressing the volume buttons and plugging in the charger doesn't work.

I'm developing an sms receiver, and i have included a KeyguardManager and a PowerManager to be able to disable the keyguard and turn on the screen if user would like to. This works great, but only once.
When a message is received, the keyguard gets unlocked and the screen is turned on, and it gives out a sound and vibration. But if i don't read the message right away, but let the device power off by screen time out, and i then receive another message while the last one is not read, the device does not turn the screen on again, and it does not give out a sound or vibration, until i turn on the screen manually, then the sound and vibration comes.
If i close all received messages, then my app is able to disable the keyguard and turn on the screen and give out a sound and vibration when a new message is received.Here is my code that is run when the keyguard should be unlocked and the screen should be turned on.
Code:
private void disableKeyGuard()
{
KeyguardManager km = (KeyguardManager)getSystemService(KEYGUARD_SERVICE);
kl = km.newKeyguardLock("SMSHandler");[code].....

So I use the task killer...and at the moment say when I kill tasks it'll tell me there is about 200M avaliable memory free...if I use the phone for a day it'll maybe go down to 150M even if I am still killing apps and there is nothing in 'running services'. If i turn off the phone and turn it back on it goes up to 250M. What is running that I can't stop myself to make it go down from the 250M but that I can just eliminate by turning off the phone?
