General :: Smart Phone Without Data Plan?
Aug 29, 2012
I know you are required to have a data plan for a smart phone. But does that only apply to those on 2 year contracts?
I have an old D2 that my wife wants to use. She currently uses a dumb phone. She doesn't want a data plan, doesn't want the smart phone features. She just wants to use it for calling & texting.
Is there any way at all that can happen? Or does any smart phone, even older ones or unlocked ones, need a data plan?

I thought that we were allowed 300 MB of data roaming without running into overages. I checked my bill today online and it said I use 981 KB out of 0 KB of data available while roaming, but it said I was charged $0.00 for this.

I used the recovery mode first time - it worked, second time playing with NoBloat - it gets stuck in boot screen.I can go to the recovery mode menu, both chinese and english, can do a full clear cache, data, format, but phone still won't boot.
I can use ADB shell, but Smart phone flash tool does not recognize phone, MTK droid tool recognizes it, but I can't backup it.

Looking for possibly undeleting a few pictures I took yesterday on my Galaxy 4S smart phone.
I know the directory where I need to do the undeleting but none of the un-delete programs I have gathered will show anything that makes sense when it comes to the phone.
When i plug in the phone to my computer I get 2 directories..
Phone and Card (card is my 32gb micro sd)
The pictures I would need to try undeleting would be in the following directory: ComputerSCH-I545PhoneDCIMCamera
I cannot find a way to have any undelete program scan that portion to recover files... I have even taken out the micro sd card which did not matter ..

I currently don't have a slow smartphone but when I had my original Droid it would really slow down until I put a new or updated rom on it. Even if I rebooted it it would still be slow. I now have the Droid Bionic and it's really fast but will it someday get slow? I guess I don't understand the smartphone technology very well, yet. Is there or will there be some sort of software that you can run that will speed it back up?

I have a couple questions about an unusual usage model for android smartphones:Does anyone use a phone-only plan with their android smartphones? And then use wifi for data?In other words, can I place my at&t simcard, which only has phone service (no dataplan), in an unlocked android smartphone (e.g., N1) and have a functioning cellular phone? Is there anything that I can only download over a cellular dataplan (as opposed to a wifi connection)? For example, over-the-air updates?

I'm trying to find some kind of data only plan. The best I've found is data + other stuff for $30. I'm looking for $20 or less if possible. I don't want texting, voice, email, or any extras, just data. I have a phone that I use to call with, and a google voice #, so I would like to text via gvoice and use my other phone for calling. I've been using an iPhone over WiFi, but it's completely useless outside of my apartment (or somewhere that has wifi, which isn't where I usually go).I've read about a $25 android plan from tmo, but I couldn't find it on the site. Does it still exist?I don't currently have an android based phone, I intend to sell the iPhone and get one, so any suggestions on that would be nice as well.

Hey everyone, if I buy a GSM Android phone from ebay/craigslist, can I activate it and use it without a data plan (aka Wifi only)? The reason I ask is that next month I'm leaving to study abroad in Egypt for a year and won't even be using my AT&T sim card, so there's no point in paying monthly for a data plan.edit: If I buy it as soon as this week, I'll be using it with AT&T until I leave, then will switch with an Egyptian carrier sim card)

I've recently upgraded devices and would like to give my son my old Thunderbolt to use like an ipod. I do not however wish to activate the phone. Are there any apps that will allow him to make calls or send sms messages when he is connected to wifi but has no phone number or data plan attached to the phone? I'm pretty sure he can make and receive calls using skype, he already is able to video chat with that...but I would love to be able to text him when it's time to come home etc..

I'm currently an iphone 3gs user and i've been hearing more and more about the evo that makes me love it. i'm an avid google user and i don't like how apple neuters their phone to google, or just about anything else to be honest. i've had to jailbreak just to get functionality that should come standard. I like that android obviously caters to google products and a small amount of research shows me that i can do everything i want with a droid device that i currently do with an iphone. on to my question...i could justify switching out of my current contract, but only on a monthly plan. my thought process is i could use a 4g device with google voip for calls. do you think sprint would sell data only plans to the phone?

I don't want a data plan. I waited in line at the Sprint store for an hour and a half this morning before being told that i must have a data plan to buy the phone, and there are no current plans to sell it unlocked. I have wireless 95% of where I go. Dataplans cost more than all of my utilities combined. I cannot believe these criminals won't let me buy an unsubsidized EVO and use it as a normal phone.

currently have the lg voyager with $10 vcast and $15 internet data plan. ordered the incredible from best buy and will be activating from home. do i have to call up and cancel these both before activating my incredible and will the data plan be automatically implemented since its required? im guessing its to much to ask to just cancel the vcast and see if the internet charge carries over at $15 instead of $30. either way it will be worth it to get rid of this brick of a phone.

I'm jumping off the Verizon boat and will be joining sprint next month with the release of this phone. What data plan will everybody be choosing when they get it? If you're going for an unlocked phone w/o data plan, why?

I have google voice. And the quality is excellent but im on a non data plan so I can't check it out in 3g. I live in a t-mobile edge zone so I want to know about the voice quality & reliability cause I'm planning on getting a nexus with a t-mobile data only plan. Will it be like a regular phone call or will I have poor quality?

I got another phone and gave my wife the Behold 2 without data plan. I signed in using my SIM card, then put her SIM in and signed in. So we can dowload apps using wifi (or do I just THINK it's using wifi?) and she gets her gmail. But no apps access the web and can't browse the web.

since launch day, Sept. 9. Just a heads up for anyone upgrading or opening up a new account to a smart phone. It's up to you, but you just might want to ask and confirm at the Point of Sale if you are indeed on the unlimited data plan.
Received an interesting text msg from Verizon. Turns out my balance is $494.90. Evidently, I've never had a data plan and I've been getting charged for every single Mb.
*611 and CS immediately recognized what happened. I was never put on a data plan at the POS. It's as simple and complicated as that. $340 in data charges. She put me on the $30 unlimited data and credited me the data charges minus the $30 I would've paid this billing cycle.
No big deal except the long wait time over the phone and for some reason it took her another five minutes to do whatever was needed to fix it. Also, it has to be "cleared" first because "of the size of the credit". She'll call me back Sunday(she's off Friday and Saturday... good for her) after 1pm to confirm and tell me it went through.

(We'll see if this gets any votes for dumb question of the week.)I don't have a data plan, nor do I want one. I knew the GPS was problematic on the Galaxy S when I bought it, but I didn't really foresee much GPS use. I'm curious to play with it, but don't know how much I'll actually need it.Am I right in assuming that the basic GPS is separate from 3G in that I can use it to find my location? I understand that overlaying my location on Google Maps needs 3G (unless I'm using WiFi). However, is it also possible to overlay my location on off-line, cached maps like those in MapDroyd and Maps (-)?Also, what privileges/settings do I need for the GPS to communicate with these maps and show my location?

I've tried searching for an answer to this in the forums but I can't find someone who has already asked it.In any case I'm wondering whether its possible to use a Nexus One without a data plan. I have access to wifi pretty much everywhere I would use my device and thus a data plan really is not worthwhile for the cost. That being said I know that for other android devices, the very first time they're turned on, the user is required to connect to their Gmail account via data. Would I run into a similar situation with the Nexus One? Is it possible to use the device from the get go without any data? Do any of the primary apps(besides google maps obviously) absolutely require data to be used?

We bought a G1 off of a 3rd Party Carrier (brand new), and activated it via Wifi.Tmobile was able to recognize it when we put the sim card in.(the picture of the phone appeared when we went to account settings within the tmobile website). So basically, we have an unlimited text and messaging plan. and NO data plan.
The internet works fine on the phone when using wifi. However, we are having issues with picture messaging. We receive the text message + picture attached, however, the g1 will not let us download it. I have looked around and seen workarounds for this error. One method was to forward the text to an email and download it from there. However, we could not get this to work.SO my question is,What (if any), is the most up-to-date method to get MMS over Wifi without a data plan.

So after reading some other questions on here, I'm still kind of confused about the point of buying the $45 vs. the $30 data plan. What's the benefit of the more expensive one? From what I had understood in the past is that the $45 is if you want your exchange account pushed and synced, which I thought implied that you did not get those exchange features on the $30 plan. One of the big needs I have is that I can get my college e-mails, on an exchange server, pushed/synced to/on my phone.

Remember when choosing your minutes was the single most important thing on your cell plan? Then slowly, texting options became more important? Now, with smartphones everywhere, I see the Data Plan as the most important option. As for me, when I see the incredible, I see so much more than just a phone. For me, the phone part seems more like a tacked on feature in that the device is so much more capable than a mere phone. With its constant connection to the internet and its ability to run apps ranging from anything to everything you can imagine, the Incredible seems to fully capture the term 'Personal Computer'. Of course, having minutes to talk on your phone is important, but is that slowly becoming less and less a priority? With the availability of Skype and other VoIP services, could cell phone plan minutes be a thing of the past in the not to distant future?
