General :: Restrict Privileges On Tablet For Other Users
Sep 4, 2012
I need to lend some tablets to some friends for testing an app. The problem is that I don't complete trust in them (or they are too smart or they aren't very familiar with digital products), so I'm afraid that they can make some trouble voluntarily or not.
I'm searching for something that can block the access to determinate applications of the tablet (for example: phone, settings or other installed apps) and the install of new app. Something like a limited user of the tablet, that allowed you to running only some default apps.
I've tried to test some apps that allow you to open the app just by entering a code or a sequence, but they aren't very safe. I always find a way to bypass them. Moreover this type of application don't block the install of new app. What can I do to create this sort of "Limited User"?

We want to develop an application which should be the only one our users should use. So we need to PREVENT them using other applications. (Mainly to make the maintenance support possible - we plan to buy at about 1000 phones, so the maintenance is tough task!) Is there any way to restrict the users?
For instance, is ADW Launcher able to do such things? Or is it possible to achieve this by coding our specific replacement of Home Launcher? And what about using some ASE scripts?
I am a beginner to Android OS, please do not assume any specific knowledge in your possible answers.

I have my app in the market which is mainly for US based people as I dont have the database that is required for any other country.
So I am wondering if it is possible to restrict the app to be visible to and downloaded by only US based users.

I purchased a AOSON M60 fabbed at foxconn a couple of weeks back, it claims to be pre-Rooted. From Item Description: "The machine has obtained permanent ROOT privileges, a great convenience to the user management system software and remove unwanted software."
I have tested this with the Root checker app and it fails reporting that the device isn't rooted. I have checked this with Titanium Backup and it also reports it's not rooted.
When i have checked this with SuperOneClick v 3.2.2 it says:
Checking if rooted... CheckIfRooted 0.14s True
Checking for shell root... CheckIfShellRooted 0.15s False
The application then stopps at Shell rooting device...-Step #7 WaitForDevice (This never completes)
From my simple understanding, the shell rooting is a one shot thing per boot, and isn't required if the device reports back that rooted=true.

Any way to block my son's phone from calling or texting specific phone numbers? I want him to be able to add phone numbers and contacts, but be unable to call or text a couple of specific phone #s. Is there a way to do this? I have Verizon but their number blocking service only works for incoming calls, not for outgoing.

I want to use another phone's data [my phone has no data] with tethering, but random apps I have installed use up data [not a whole lot, but enough].
I want to be able to whitelist which apps work on wifi. So that way only the apps I chose to allow and use will be using up the data.
Is there an app for this? I have CM10, so I would expect for the solution to be a root app. Or perhaps iptables?

As the thread states I am looking for a way to restrict access to certain websites through Chrome or the device as a whole. My company is releasing devices (non-rooted) that have 4g access and need a way to limit what the users can access.

I have a Nexus 7 tablet and every few days I notice a few new apps on the device. I'm not sure if they're full apps or just simply icons to download apps or get more information. I have tried to avoid using them. I know previously I had a couple apps that were sending notifications to the notification system that I considered to be spam. After some research I found out how you can find out which apps are doing it and disable notifications from those apps so that took care of that.

I installed the Sprint 2.1 leak RUU and then rooted. Probably backwards, but everything has been working great for the past few days regardless. My problem is when I try to use something like Titanium Backup. I get a message saying that "busybox works but the "su" command does not elevate to root" It goes on to say my superuser whitelist system app does not work. I tried to install the superuser whitelist app from the market but it said it was incompatible with my phone. What can I do now to get Superuser privileges?

With a free sunday at my disposal, i thought i would try and sort my hero out as it has become super-laggy after the OTA 2.1 update (HTC hero locked to 3UK network, previously had 1.5).
So i've been trying to read as much as i can on this and other forums and got as far as installing Universal Androot, which reported success in rooting the phone.
However have now installed (and bought PRO ver) of Titanium Backup which refuses to recognize the root. It returns:
ERROR: Sorry, I could not acquire root privileges. This application will *not* work! Please verify that your ROM is rooted and includes BusyBox, and try again.
Yet, TB is listed as 'allowed' under SuperUser Permissions. And even weirder when the error dialogue box comes up sometimes a strapline flashes briefly across the screen 'Titanium backup has been granted .. permissions'. I take it that this is Superuser informing me.
So why doesn't Titanium recognize the root? Have tried re-starting and rerunning Androot (which reports that phone is already rooted, do you still wish to proceed). It's almost as if superuser isn't giving the OK fast enough or something.
Obviously don't want to start messing around with ROMs if i can't first backup my data!

The permissions say that you must agree to allow them to delete files from your storage including your SD card; must agree to allow them to extract any information from your phone, etc. In other words they can do any thing they want with your phone and the data in it.
Is there any way to not grant these permissions and still get updates?

I'm trying to limit my mobile data usage with out jumping through hoops.
I'm looking for a widget, that with one click of a button, it can restrict background data, disable auto-sync and enable mobile data, and when pressed again, enable WiFi, disable background restriction and enable auto-sync.
This function, no matter how trivial, would save time and effort.
Is there anything like this out there? Would something like this require root?

I displayed map and on top of map, I displayed a number of overlay Items(Markers). Clicking on overlay Items or markers will do some action. But the problem is when I click around the marker, means outside the marker, at that time also, the event triggers. I want to restrict that exactly when I am clicking on the marker, event has to take place. I am doing the event in opTap() method.
How can I restrict the event triggering to exactly when I click on the marker.

I wanted to restrict an application from accessing network, so that application does not upload or download. Basically to stop rouge application from suspicious network activity.
I understand Android provides a way to limit/restrict network access for Mobile network, from Settings --> Data Usage screen. But I'm looking for a way to completely restrict network access (both mobile and WiFi networks) to any particular application.
I'm using Moto G, Android Kitkat

From the online articles and the encryption description i was left with the impression that i will need to enter the password only on boot.Well appears that once encrypted the only active unlock options become, face unlock, pin and password. All take too long for my daily use, and since you don't have to use the encryption password for unlocking (the phone is decrypted on boot) but other options like face unlock, why we can't unlock with the normal slider screen or at least pattern unlock? Is there a way to go around it and enable the slider unlock on an encrypted phone?
i know that decreases the security, but knowing that if i lose my phone, chances are the battery will die, and they will need to decrypt it then...
