HTC Hero :: Microphone Icon Missing For Speech To Text
Aug 5, 2010I'm happy with my Orange UK 2.1 updated Hero except I have no microphone icon on the popup keyboard for converting speech to text. Tried within Handcent and vanilla messages app and elsewhere. I have used this feature on a friend's unbranded Hero running 2.1 (in Egypt) so is it missing from Orange UK ROM or have I missed a settng for enabling it?

Oct 25, 2013Take a look at the microphone icon on a stock 4.3 Jelly Bean home screen. Open up Google now and the same icon is there. Now take a look at the Play Store. In Play Magazines as well you the mic icon from Ice Cream Sandwich. The Play Store has (somewhat) recently undergone a significant upgrade when Jelly Bean was at a mature age of version 4.2. It will updated again in time for 4.4 KitKat, evolving into line with current Android design guidelines featuring the sliding navigation drawer. Will Google then update the mic icon or will they revert it back to the ICS style in the future?

Jun 24, 2010I love swype and am getting used to it. I have it set up as the default entry method in Hand cent, but I miss the microphone icon in the touch keyboard, because sometimes "speaking" a text message is convenient. Is there a short cut to use the voice input when using swype, or do I have to hold down on the text entry part and switch to "touch keyboard" each time? If you are using swype and can still use the microphone button, please let me know how.

Mar 13, 2010I have a friend with a moto droid using handcent and he is able to speak a voice quick reply into handcent and it types it out...(handy while driving). I installed handcent on my eris today and do not have the microphone icon available on the quick reply screen. Any ideas how I can get it to work? Is this available on the eris?

Jun 10, 2010When I rooted to 2.1 I had a microphone by the gear. I also notice a microphone on the Evo. I was having issues with Gmail and switched to the official RUU and now have no microphone icon. That is an amazing feature! So how do I get it back? Diff keyboard or a feature I am missing? It looks like I cannot root anymore (for a while at least). Anyways just having the microphone icon would suffice I don't have to root per se.

Aug 7, 2010When I fire up an emulator using Eclipse and have a look at live wallpapers, the two default wallpapers - Cube and Cube Resources - show as grayed-out icons that look like the image is missing.
The wallpaper I have written is exactly the same, the proper image doesn't show. Doesn't work on my phone either.
Howeever, if I go into manage services in the settings screen in the emulator, the proper icon is showing. Its showing as the service icon but not the application icon.
Ive got: <application android:label="@string/wallpapers" android:debuggable="true" android:icon="@drawable/foo">
with foo.pmg, foo.jpg in drawable all being accepted by the IDE but not showing as the application icon.
As I say, the default cube live wallpaper doesn't show its correct icon either - I downloaded the source and recompiled, same thing.

Oct 25, 2009I recently updated the handcent messaging app and after a few soft resets the icon on the home screen is gone. the name is there and a grey X. if i reinstall the app it reappears but it takes too much time to keep redoing my settings. anyone else notice that? it happened twice after about 8 soft resets.

Nov 28, 2010I see in some videos the google search bar in 2.1 is suppsoed to to have the little microphone icon to activate voice search. I flashed 2.1 rodgers firmare onto my x10a and when the phone boots I can see the icon for a few seconds then it deisapears!! Anyone else with the same problem? Jun 3, 2014I just got a new AT&T Radiant (aka ZTE Z740). I had it for a few days while I waited for a SIM card to come in the mail, installed one app, and just got a feel for how it worked on wifi. (I've never had an Android or any smart phone before). Last night after activating the phone and setting up the data connection with Consumer Cellular, I noticed that the Chrome browser icon was missing from the app tray. I don't know exactly when that happened, but it was possibly related to the data setup process.
I've searched Google and the forums here and haven't come up with a solution. I've seen suggestions for unhiding icons, but I don't seem to have the option to hide/unhide icons, or at least I'm not finding it (if I hit the menu button from the app drawer, I just get 'manage apps' and 'system settings').
I also a suggestion to look at the disabled apps list, but the 'manage apps' function doesn't indicate that Chrome is disabled. It is still there - I don't think it can be uninstalled.
I'm not sure what else to do. Is factory reset the next step? Not looking forward to setting up the data connection again (I guess I would need to go through all the settings and write them down, unless there is a way to back them up).

Nov 27, 2010when I tap the contacts icon on the bottom of the screen, my contacts are not there, only my own name. I can search for names in messaging and everyone from my phone contacts, to my facebook friends and even Fearne cotton from twitter is there! I would like just my phone contacts visible in my phone book. I've tried to back up contacts from before the software update yesterday, and it takes ages to get through to 100% but the names are still missing.

General :: External Microphone In Headset Jack?
Jul 26, 2013There are some external stereo microphones for IOS that plug into the headphone jack rather than the dock connector. For instance, the IK Multimedia iRig MIC Cast.
They claim that they work on Android as well.
Well, they may work, but do they provide better sound quality than the internal phone microphone, turning it into a decent digital recorder for music, for example? (with the right software, of course).
My question isn't really whether those microphones are better quality than the internal microphones, as I assume they are. But does the headphone jack on Android phones (mine is the Galaxy S4) really provide the input capability for better quality sound, including in stereo?
Of course that jack can transfer sound in both directions, headset and microphone, as it is a phone. For output, the phone provides quality stereo music output to headphones, as modern phones are also music players. However, the microphones on phone stereo headsets are generally low quality monaural microphones only suitable for phone calls, usually not better than the internal microphone, might be worse.
So the question is--is the input function of that jack capable of providing quality stereo input, if one has a quality stereo microphone attached? (No matter how good quality the microphone is, if that jack really cannot transmit that quality sound, but reduces it to a very low resolution and frequency-reduced monaural sound, no point at all in attaching such a microphone.
