General :: How To Password Protect Apps Installation
Jan 25, 2013
I have a Nexus 7 tablet and I need to prevent my little brother from installing apps from the Google play store and from other sources. There's an option in the play store to require a pin code but that's only for app purchases, I need to also prevent the installation of free apps.

I'm new to Android. I recently was an iPhone fan but thought that Android was a better alternative to iPhone. So anyway, I have a few questions about the Captivate. Does Android have support for apps that you can use to password protect certain apps on the phone? Like messages, and photos for more private stuff. Another question I have: is the Captivates reception really bad? I currently have the iPhone 4 while it doesn't have the best of signal, its not too bad either. And my last question is if the captivate has support for 32gb cards. I'm sorry if someones already gone over these but I could find anything right away. Anyways, I look forward to Android and the Captivate.

I'm wondering if there is a way (or app) to password protect individual apps/programs.Sometimes I hesitate to let my friends try out my phone, because it means they have full access to my text msgs, emails, facebook, etc. I'd like to password protect JUST those apps.

I had a Galaxy Ace S5830 phone and now I've changed my phone. It had one app that I could protect any of my gallery photos with a password. I don't know if it was a pre-installed app by Samsung or I had installed it manually and I can't remember the name of that. I need it for my new Galaxy Note... Remember I just want special photos in my gallery to be password protected. I DON'T mean an "App Locker Program, such AppLocker Pro app or similar to it".

Is there a way or an app that will let me lock certain parts of Settings? Like if I want to allow our users to change Sound, Display, etc, but lock them out of Applications and Accounts&Sync?
I have found a few apps that will let us password protect things on the phone, but with them if I choose Settings, then they can't change anything and I want them to have a bit of flexibility, but I have to keep them out of Applications because then they could just kill the password app that locks them out of certain apps.

I'm looking for a way to lock or password protect the wallpaper settings. There are apps out there that lock apps, and lock the "settings" app, but long pressing the homescreen allows you to alter wallpapers directly and circumvents any such protection.
I know you can password protect the whole phone, but that's besides the point. I'm looking for a way to protect wallpaper settings specifically.

I'm on a family plan with my wife and 13yr old son. We purchased a Galaxy S4 for our son as a Birthday present in October. However, as of recent his grades have taken a dive. We notice he eats, sleeps and breathes on the phone. He primarily uses it for surfing the net, instagram or youtube. We were thinking of grounding him and removing his phone but we need him to have his phone as a point of contact. However, is there anyway to stop his data usage. I realize there is a setting on the phone to disable data usage but it is fairly easy to re-enable it.
Is there anyway to lock or password protect the phones settings or data usage?
I tried googling but the results kept yielding information relative to the "lock screen" which isnt what im looking for.

How do I protect an app with a PIN / Password like mint.com does? This would need something like a session variable that resets when the user navigates away from app by pressing HOME or BACK. How do we accomplish this?

I love being able to check e-mails from different accounts on my phone (never had one that did that before!) but, one of them is a work account that I would really like to protect. Is there a way I can force the phone to ask for my account password every time I access this particular account - or is there something I can set internally on the phone to protect the e-mail app?

Is it possible to password protect the recovery image; where we flash our roms ect...?
I have password protected the device to stop the phone being used while it is on, but it's really pointless when someone can turn the phone off and just reflash the device.
Granted, they could do that anyway even if i had an offical rom without the recovery image, but it would still be a nice feature if it's possible.

Just wondered how many of you use apps to protect against theft or loss of android.
1.Apps to prevent theft - apps that make a sound when moved like 'Antitheft Alarm','Alarm Antitheft Alarm Screen Lock'.etc
2.Apps that prevent loss or misplacement - apps that locate a phone through GPS like 'WAY GPS Tracking','Lookout' , 'Comodo','PreyProject','Where's my Droid, etc
3.apps to locate phone if stolen by locking the phone, locating it,taking cam pictures - similar as No 2 apps like 'Where's my Droid','Locate lost Phone' and apps like 'Prey Project','Lookout's Lockcam feature','Thief face trap mini',etc

Just did a little search on google with my paid app name, I found these:
http://www.ipmart-forum.com/archive/index.php/t-337082.html http://droidappz.co.cc/index.php/board,21.0.html
Someone bought the priced app from market with the "rooted" phone and copy the apk file, then post on the websites for others to download.
Should Android team give a better way to protect the priced apps?
For example, encrypt the apk with the unique device hardware id for each download request. And verify the key before execution. So the apk can only be used on this phone.
There should be much better and complicated ways. but this is the basic idea.
I have checked the BlackBerry app world, looks like they have something different:
http://na.blackberry.com/eng/developers/appworld/faq.jsp
>My application requires a license key, how can I get a license key to >the end user? >BlackBerry App World asks you to indicate that an application requires >a license key. The license key models supported include Static, >Single, Pool or Dynamic.

When I go to the Play website I have to log in before I can do anything. However, from my phone or tablet I can install as many free apps as they want with no password required.
My kids are getting tablets but I don't want them to be able to install anything on their own, including free apps.

I just bought a Note 2. The only reason I bought it because on iphone I wasn't able to hide my apps without jailbreaking. I was really looking forward to some on android market that would allow me to hide certain apps and password lock them along with password locking settings options. Yet I have not been able to find any. I have a few apps that I want to hide from my family and friends.
I would rather not root my phone as I am not that technically advanced!

I'm new to android but just used the guides at this forum to root my LG Optimus V. I was wondering if now that I have root there is a way to install a boot password similar to the one I have on my computer. Before it loads the operating system, the BIOS asks for a password. Is there any similar functionality for android?
Also, is this possible on other devices even if it is not on mine? It's one of my favorite laymen security measures.

I wiped my phone and flashed the latest cm nightly for my N1. I started reinstalling some apps that I had already paid for. Some worked, but other paid apps did not install. I received the 'installation unsuccessful' error message after the app was downloaded from the market. Swiftkey, ProcessManager Full, 360 Live, Rom manager premium, and iSyncr all failed to install properly. I have tried clearing the market cache and rebooting but the error persists. Not really sure what to do anymore. Has anyone gotten around this problem?

My parents are going on a trip in a month and they have there heart set on taking a smartphone with them. What they need is being able to call, text and mail. They also want to be able to use it as a backup (just in case) for finding their way. So just in case they get lost to find out where they are on their map or use the gps to guide them for a little while.
So basically, calling, sms, mail and gps. They don't need to be able to change a lot of settings. So, I was thinking about installing their (yet to buy) smart phone with a simple home screen and the settings they would need. To keep them from accidentally messing anything up, I was wondering if it is possible to password protect settings and stuff.
-how to protect settings etc.
-a good home screen
-other things like very simple gps app for example

I have had this same problem happen twice to me on 2 different phones on 2 different Verizon accounts!
The password screen locks and when it asks for the user name and password it states invalid user name / password!
Is this a known problem since when I called and talked to both Verizon and HTC the only thing they could tell me was to do a hard reset and they weren't aware of this problem?
