I have an issue with the "people" (contact) app of ICS.
I am being asked to make an account to make contact groups, which unfortunately I can't allow!
Making offline contact groups without making an account.
I am running on rooted phone with cyanogen mod.

Is it possible to create a shortcut or widget to a contact group? For example, shortcuts to "Work colleagues", "friends", people living abroad, etc.

I have contact groups that I use in the desktop gmail client to send messages to distribution lists without any issues. Those groups get synced to my android contacts and I can see them in the groups tab. However, neither gmail nor any sms app that I have tried actually use these contact groups for anything.
Am I missing some setting for this to work or is this not implemented in android?
Coming from a Blackberry, I was able to create a "Group" and add people to that group so that I could send SMS Text messages to those in that group rather than having to add each one individually each time. I haven't found a way to do this on the new Droid. Is there some software/trick that I'm missing? I used this for work when multiple people need to get the same message at the same time.

After I switch the display group to "Phone Contacts", it'll stay that way for an hour or so, but later, it'll switch right back to "All contacts". (I have "facebook" and "twitter" groups in contacts as well). Is anyone else having this problem?

I can't delete the default groups ("vip", seriously?), which just clutters things up. I can't figure out how to make a folder on a home page from one of my groups. When I sync my contacts into windows, the group assignments gets lost, and I have to sync EVERYTHING, meaning my poker buddies and some chick I saw a movie with once end up on my work computer...
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am using the Samsung Galaxy S. I have sync working and all my Goggle contacts are listed in my phone. But they all appear in one group, called Google. I have my Google contacts in groups, and had hoped that the sync would bring down the group hierarchy. But it did not. However my phone is aware of the Goggle groups, because if I try to create a group in the phone with the same name as a Goggle group, my phone raises an error saying that the group exists. But I have no visibility to my Goggle groups on the phone. I only see a "Google" group. Is it possible to see my Google groups in the phone? If so, how?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI finally did a factory reset after installing the froyo update and now have my phone set up just about how it was before. Problem is,I have 180+ Google contacts sorted into 11 different groups and I want to assign a specific ringtone for each group. I did this some time ago before the upgrade for each individual contact but I just don't want to do it again. Yeah I'm lazy but what can I say I thought restoring my contacts would have kept the ringtones synced but it did not.I haven't found an app that will do it (a free app anyway).

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have all of my contacts saved to the phone, deleted all contacts saved on SIM. I now saved everything to google contacts, and even after saving some in various groups, I cannot get the groups to sync over to the vibrant. All of the contacts synced perfectly, but not the groups. I even tried making new groups using different names than the generic google group names. If I display contacts from both the phones memory and google contacts, then it will show me the groups I've selected.

Had a few places (hotel, boat cruise, wineries, Santa Barbara Mission, some restaurants, that taco stand Julia Child made famous, etc.), and just created a contact for each. No inputting on phone or using voice, it's already done.Had concert @ Hollywood Bowl. They have shuttle service at some offsite locations like the LA Zoo or in Studio City. I just create a group called Concerts, and copy and paste address from website.Meeting friend at bar never been to? Already have a Group called Bars. Just copy and paste address, and your done.I have groups for everything. Family, San Francisco, San Diego friends, Hotels, Bars, sporting venues, whatever. I cross link whenever I can, Just hit People and slide over to Groups. The whole goal for me is just to hit buttons, and not have to input anything when I'm on run. Use it like AppBrain. So much easier to manage everything from Google contacts page. Just copy and paste eveything.Best part is, can delete or add anytime.Also saves me battery since doing stuff on computer, and everything is synced automatically.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy app (first written for Android 1.6) reads groups and contacts but I have so far only been able to write code for 2.0 that compiles but I have never executed. Since the Contacts API and particularly the way groups work has changed substantially in ways that I haven't quite been able to find out I need to try it on a phone to see how it now works.So is there any way at all I can test contact groups in the emulator? I have looked all over for help on this and all I have been able to glean is that I cannot get groups into the emulator unless I create them in a Google (or other, Exchange?) account then sync with it. However I cannot seem to sync/open an account from my emulator - and this I have read may be impossible as you can only do it from a phone with a valid IMEI.

From within 'contacts' i hit the 'display options' then selecting the email account I see the drop down for system contact groups-friends, family, coworkers. I've been playing around with the App Organizer, and been putting things into folders. However, I am trying to do a few things.
Add shortcuts into the groups App Organizer creates, and/or create custom icons for Folders I put on the Home pages.
For example, I have 6 mail accounts (don't ask) and want to put them in a group called mail. Using AppOrganizer, I can only organizer the main mail icon into the group, I want to add the 5 other shortcuts I created for each account. OR I group them into a folder, but I want to change the folder icon to an envelope.
Also, anyone know any good apps that puts email notifications on the top taskbar?
How do I make groups in my contacts like family, work, friends, etc? Somehow my mom and husband are under these two titles but I dunno how I got them there...

Here http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/providers/content-providers.html it only explains the old API. I haven't found any proper tutorial, example, etc. showing how to create a contact.
As far as I have figured out I have to create a raw contact, under raw contacts I found http: //developer.android.com/reference/android/provider/ContactsContract.RawContacts.html.
From there I tried:

The last line of code shows that "Data.CONTENT_URI" cannot be resolved. It looks a little bit that this line of code is for the 1.6 API, I have changed the Data.CONTENT_URI to ContactsContract.Data.CONTENT_URI. At least the code compiles and executes, but I still don't have a contact Mike Sullivan in my addressbook afterwards. I exchanged now as well the other "Data" with "ContactsContract.Data" still no changes.
Has anyone an easy example how to create a person in the addressbook on 2.x?
I made some progress, it looks like that I always need an account on my phone to add a contact. My phone has account type com.google and account name xxxxx@gmail.com. The emulator has nothing. I wonder to which account I have to add my contacts? Can I assume that I ALWAYS have exactly one gmail account and take this one?
I think the title says it all, don't you? It should be possible to create a new contact App by duplicating an existing one, either in GMail Contacts (in a full-fledged browser) or directly in the Contacts app on an Android device. This would allow, for example, adding new members of a family or new employees of a company. Then, just the new name, email or phone number (or whatever) could be entered to replace the duplicated ones and leave the remaining fields all the same. As a former Palm user, I was able to do this on that platform (primitive as it now seems by comparison to Android).

On my HTC Legend (HTC Sense with Android 2.1) if you go to add and folder from a homescreen you have a choice of All people, Facebook Phonebook, Phones, Starred (Favorites). Is it possible to create another folder that will hold members of a contact group that I have created? I can create a new empty folder but don't know how to put contacts into this instead of other home screen icons (this would do if I can't use contact groups).
