General :: How Does Rooting Actually Work
Apr 3, 2012
I used to be a big IOS jailbreaker. I had been doing it for 4 years, before taking up android just a couple months ago. (and i must say, android is MUCH better). Anyway i know that basically during the jailbreaking process, the software uses an exploit on bootup and injects codes during the signature check on every level to make the idevice think that what it is running is legit, unmodified apple software. Hence why tethered jailbreaks need the original program to bypass iboot, because an exploit has not been found deep enough in the system to work in iboot aswell.
So how does rooting compare? Dont be afraid to explain using big words and in detail.

I currently have a PC, Vista and I am looking to switch to a MAC possibly. My dilemma is I root all my phones and tablets, which would steer me away from a MAC if they weren't compatible.
Use MAC full time to root? Is it very different than a PC? & Would you recommend it even over a PC if you use a MAC?

That's what I want to know. If yes - awesome, if no - who can we "request" to root that thing?!? If maybe - what are the risks I'm running into? How can I aver those risks? Backup? System Restore? What are my options.

I came from WEBOS and ROOTING a device meant typing a string into the device and the Superuser icon will show up.
In and Android device I would like to know what exactly the rooting process is doing. Is it turning on a icon? is it actually creating the icon? is it different for different devices? etc

Is there any flawless way to root my phone without bricking it? I want to extend my battery even farther on my g2 and i just want to customize it to the max.

my tablet was orginally a samsung galaxy GT-P5113, however I rooted it and everything and now it's a 4.3 GT-P5110.
I rooted it because everyone said it would be better, however, how is limited access better? Did I do something wrong?
I can't download anything that has to do with samsung and I can't even download the samsung app store.

We have just bought a superpad 8 tablet running ICS 4.0.4 and are having trouble rooting.
z4root is what we have used in the past with older tablets, but it doesn't want to work with this tablet.
Any way to root using adb? I have used this method in the past with a Galaxy Nexus which worked no problem, but this tablet is proving to be stubborn!
What's actually happening is the tablet isn't being recognised by any machine I connect it to. USB debugging is enabled.
To start with it did pop up on my desktop saying install drivers, but now it does not show on any machine, not even in device manager!
ADB shows no devices obviously, but it's strange how it no longer wants to be detected

Is it possible to root without an exploit? I am trying to use fastboot but fastboot devices shows empty. Even the command oem unlock shows "Waiting for device". Heimdahl is not supported for my device i.e. GT-S6312. All the custom ROM installation in the forum shows using a exploit to root the device.

I updated my Galaxy Note GT-N7000 (locked to EE - Orange when I bought it - in the UK) from Android 4.0.4 to 4.1.2 via Kies last week. The update is so awful (terrible battery life and really slow to load basic functions like messaging and contacts) that it has finally tipped me into going for a custom ROM. I haven't done this before, and there is so much information out there that I would just like to make sure I have the right ideas before embarking on the process - I don't want my much-loved Note bricking!
So, my understanding is that there are four steps in the process:
a. Back up data
b. Back up apps and stock ROM
c. Root the phone
d. Install custom ROM
Question 1: Is that right? Question 2: Have I missed anything or added things that are unnecessary? Q3: Have I got the list in the right order?
Next, when it comes to backing up the ROM, there seem to be many programs/apps out there to do the job.
Q4: What are the recommendations for programs to do this based on the criteria of it must be a) intuitive to use, b) reliable, c) put a completely original ROM back if needed, and d) is completely removable itself so that, in the event of it needing to go to be fixed, no-one could tell that I have played with it?
I'm thinking of putting the latest Cyanogenmod ROM on it, because it seems mature, well-documented, and stable.
Q5: Are my thoughts on this accurate? Q6: Are there any ROMs that work better on the GT-N7000 than Cyanogenmod?

Are rooting/unlocking bootloader/flashing custom ROM the same as the idea of Jailbreaking on an iPhone? Does iPhones have custom ROMs too that users can install? What are benefits of jailbreaking an iPhone, what extra features can users gain?

I am considering rooting my phone because I like to tinker with things and learn new things, just for fun.Aside from learning new things, I would like to also install apps that require root permission like greenify... I'd also like to learn enough to remove crapware from my wife's gs3, but not until I learn how to do it with a level of confidence on my own phone.
I have a Nexus 4 right now, and a 5 on the way. I also have a 2012 nexus 7.Generally, how easy is to learn about rooting on a nexus? Good phone or tablet to start with? Easy to recover from mistakes?
