General :: How Do Startup Managers Work
May 11, 2014
I was watching a video on "best apps of 2014" on YouTube, and a startup manager was one of them.
I downloaded it and tried it out with Skype, rebooted, Skype wasn't under the running apps, barely anything was actually. i thought it worked with the skype, until i rebooted the phone again with nothing selected to not start at startup, and all the same - few - visible processes were running. disable some of the rarely used but always running background processes. for example, a game that i use and enjoy, but not every day and would like it to run upon my request. thats what i thought startup manager would do.

Are there any audio managers that actually work? I want to have my notification volume louder than my ringtone and out of the ones I've tried (Quick Settings and Audio Manager Widget) they work for a few hours then get reset to the ringtone level.

Every time I start my phone it seems that every program in the app catalog starts up. Until I activate the Advanced Task Killer and shut them all down, the thing runs like a hog. I have quite a few programs installed, but I dont use them all all of the time. Why do they all start up and is there any way beside the ATK to stop them? Is there any way to modify the startup files?

I currently run TasKiller because I find my phone gets SOOO SLOW. I back all the way out of apps but I still have trouble.
Is this still an issue for those with some form of 2.1 or am I doing something wrong? Is there maybe a better way of managing my system resources without killing apps?

Since I've bought the hero I have not installed a task manager and I would see it getting a little more laggy or choppy. So I decided to install task killer, my phone is back to being the way it was when I first got it. I know the rumors and all but I do think task manager is the way to go from 90mp free to 180mb.

Does anyone have a statement released from Google or someone within Google telling the consumers to avoid Task Managers on Android devices.I went into VZW, trying to get an additional battery (usually if u complain they send u an additional battery) because I'm getting 5-7 hours out of my battery even when I'm careful and try to stretch my battery. So the women asked questions, do u use Wifi...NEVER, don't even turn it on. Brightness? It's 1/8th of the way on to full brightness, Task manager? No Google said not to use one..So she wouldn't send me a battery because she said that its because I don't use a task manager.I was telling her Google had advised us not to and she said, that's false that Google has approved them to put task managers on people's phones who are having battery problems.(I don't believe that)I looked around Google and could only find it from joe-shomes but couldn't find a statement from Google. Can anyone provide a statement from Google that advises us not to use task managers?

Are they needed to help the phone kill tasks that it is running in the memory? I read it makes the phone faster a little but are they needed? I know android does a great job of canceling out programs and managing it's own tasks. But are these necessary to give the system an extra boost in management and speed?

There are a number of network types defined in TelephonyManager:
NETWORK_TYPE_GPRS
NETWORK_TYPE_EDGE
NETWORK_TYPE_UMTS
NETWORK_TYPE_CDMA
NETWORK_TYPE_EVDO_0
NETWORK_TYPE_EVDO_A
NETWORK_TYPE_1xRTT
NETWORK_TYPE_HSDPA
NETWORK_TYPE_HSUPA
NETWORK_TYPE_HSPA
Is there any info out there that describes what range of speeds you can expect on each of these? If that isn't available, it would be nice to be able to order them based on speed.

There's a thread similar to this on one of the Hero forums. I tried to stop using the task managers on the hero, but I noticed a quite a bit of lag once stuff kept building up. On the Moment, I was running into several issues with apps, and I figured it was due to the task manager (i use advance task manager). So to test my theory I stopped using the task manager and the device works as it should. What i found was that even with a lot of usage, this device does not slow down. Not sure if it's the lack of the sense ui (i'm using open home), the fast processor, both or what but this phone can handle everything I'm throwing at it.My advice, stop using whatever task killer you're using. One less thing to worry about makes for a better phone experience.

Verizon Wireless to store managers: Wednesday is a big day Boy Genius Report..Reason to be excited again. What if it's a possible announcement on 2.1 for either the Droid or the Eris or both? Nothing's official yet, at least about what the conference concerns, but two different sources have said this so it looks like it's true. If it is about the iPhone hitting Verizon, they may still weasel in some small tidbits about other stuff, Android included.

In cm9-alpha, I have some apps that should run on startup: Smart Rotator, LBE Privacy Guard, Plug In Launcher, and probably some others. They don't.
Now, some apps start on startup: my alarm program comes to mind.
There were two problems. One is that one app, LBE Privacy Guard, refuses to start for some reason. The second problem was that I had sync turned off, so I thought other programs weren't starting. The hack/workaround for this is to use Llama to start LBE on startup, then to run the Android Intent that shows the desktop, then to kill Llama (because there's no reason to keep it running). Note that when setting up this profile, you *cannot* test it before saving it. Otherwise, llama will kill itself and the action list won't be saved.
LBE has been fixed. But I've noticed that after restoring apps from titanium backup, they don't run on startup. I think they need to be run manually once so they register their hooks with the OS. After running applications manually once, they do run when they're supposed to.

I am running Android 4.1.1 and connecting to a VPN to secure info on public wi-fi. Unlike my laptop, which autoconnects to VPN on startup, when I go to Settings to turn wi-fi on, I must also remember to connect to VPN.
Is there a way to auto turn-on VPN at startup? Something similar to the startup folder or registry entries in Windows?

When trying to create a backup of my current ROM (original, factory ROM) it seems that after the backup process was finished, when I tried to reboot my phone it would go directly into cwm recovery instead of starting up normally. This happens every time I try to reboot the phone. I have a Samsung Exhibit sgh-t599n (metro pcs).
Other things that may be revelant to my problem: the backup was not successful (there was a message saying something about an image not being copied). Also, in the cwm recovery menu there is a warning that says "No file_contexts".

I have an android device: it's a stick connected to my TV, running android 4.1 rooted. The stick is an MK808B. The stick is connected to my TV's USB so that when I turn the TV on, the stick boots and when I turn the TV off, it shuts down completely.
I am looking for something that automatically connect the stick to VPN when I boot it. I would preferably use VPN over L2DP, although I'll take PPTP if there's no other option. I can't use openVPN because my ROM's kernel doesn't have TUN. There are two ways to approach this: one way is to connect it on boot, another way is to connect to VPN when the stick connects to a wireless network because my stick is stationary and always connects to the same wi-fi network.

I just flashed the Charmeleon rom on my EVO LTE, it's the first one I've ever done. I read that it's possible to change the starting screen which has not only images of Pokemon but sound. Also it says 'HTC one.' Is there anyway I can change this? I simply don't want Pokemon images on my phone, let alone if I'm out in public and the Pokemon audio plays.

I use a BT A2DP headset with route planners Sygic and Navigon running on a HTC Flyer tablet with Android HC. With every spoken instruction the first 2~3 seconds are lost because of some delay when audio is started. I know for sure that this delay is not in the headset.
