General :: Google Maps 6.10.0 And Extra Memory Consumption?
Aug 19, 2012
I own a (quite old now) Google Nexus One and I recently upgraded from Google Maps v6.9.0 to Google Maps v6.10.0
And I was quite surprised to see my user memory decrease a lot while the install apk is quite the same between both versions.
My Nexus One is rooted and running stock Android 2.3.6 (GB, not ICS)So I investigated and here is what I found about this new version of Google Maps.First, you must know that the memory available to the user to install new applications is mounted by the android system as '/data'.By running a 'du' command, I discovered that the following folder:
Code:
/data/data/com.google.android.apps.maps/app_
takes 11.9 Mo, which is a lot.[code].....

I have only 150mb of internal memory on my phone. These are some items that consume critical amounts of internal memory space. When I download an app, it seems I am downloading an install package. The installed app itself takes up additional space. I believe the install package persists on the internal memory, invisible to the average retail user, and takes up internal space even after the app is moved to the card.
Ex: an anonymous app
android market listed size- 3.51mb (this must be the download size of the installer)
download and install on internal memory, size listed- 5.73mb
move to SD card, size listed- 2mb
move back to internal memory, size listed- 5.73mb
Further thoughts:
1. The install package seems to remain on the internal memory even though the app moves to the card.
2. Beyond the above example, I went through each and every item listed in my settings - applications - storage use - All.
I found 105 total items on internal memory and SD card all together. By adding up the listed "Total" size of each (yes, I went through each and every one), I arrived at approximately 109mb. The phone lists internal memory use at 135mb. I would expect the internal memory use to be LESS than 109mb because some of the apps are on the card. My assumption is that much of this extra internal storage is taken up by all of the installers sitting invisible on the internal memory.
3. Based on observing the change in the Internal Memory usage when I delete app "Data", I believe the app data is being written to the internal memory even if the app is on the SD card.
Why isn't the install package deleted after the app is successfully installed? Is there an app for that?If I uninstall the app while it sits on internal memory, does it also delete the install package? If I uninstall the app without first moving it back to the internal memory, does it delete the uninstall package? How can I reclaim this internal memory space for actual use??

I have an application here that has a feature of showing a POI on the map. It's only one POI and it is only drawn when it's actually within the visible screen area. It works perfectly for a while but if I play around zooming in and out and dragging, it will eventually crash. According to Logcat, the reason is always an OutOfMemory error.
At first, I thought it was a bug on the Google Maps API. After some researching and seeing some Romain Guy posts, I was kind of convinced that I had done something stupid on my app that kept me running out of memory from time to time. Then I ran some more detailed tests with Heap Analyzer (Eclipse) on and I saw that even though I had 2+, sometimes 3+ megabytes left of free memory, I was still getting those annoyings Force Close messages caused by OutOfMemoryError. Most of the times it crashes when trying to alocate some 614kb chunk of memory regardless of how much I have left.
This problem happens a lot on Nexus One 2.2.1 and on HTC Evo 2.1. After some little testing, I got no crash neither on G1 1.6 nor Samsung Galaxy S i9000 2.1. But I cannot say for sure the G1 and Galaxy will not show this problem after more testing. I can only think of a memory fragmentation problem. I hope this problem has a solution. I will also be glad if I can just catch this error and prevent the app from crashing.................

How can one track memory consumption in Android? The Android "Heap" view in Eclipse and java.lang.Runtime methods seem failing for my purpose. I tried to figure out how much memory my app consumes in order to make decisions for future directions. Most of the memory goes into Bitmap objects. Just to test memory consumption I created huge bitmaps in a Loop and logged the java.lang.Runtime memory values: created bitmap (610k free, 2371k total, 16384k max) created bitmap (615k free, 2371k total, 16384k max) created bitmap (615k free, 2371k total, 16384k max) created bitmap (615k free, 2371k total, 16384k max)
Nothing seems to hapen, but on the fifth Bitmap: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: bitmap size exceeds VM budget at android.graphics.Bitmap.nativeCreate(Native Method) at android.graphics.Bitmap.createBitmap(Bitmap.java:343) at de.greenrobot.colorball.GameView.init(GameView.java:86)
This seems confusing at first. Is java.lang.Runtime the right place to check application memory stats in Android at all? Are Bitmaps allocated outside the app's heap? How can I track it?

I am running a MT3G with Cyanogen's mod. I love it...the performance is good, the options are great. It's like having a Linux computer in my pocket (that's actually exactly what it is). The one consistent problem I am having is with the traffic layer in Google Maps. I can enable it and it shows the traffic information just fine. After a few seconds, however, I get a message that says, "low on memory, traffic has been turned off". If I leave GMaps and open another app that I used called TaskPanel, it tells me I have 30+ MB of available memory. I'm not sure what's going on. Any ideas? I have Googled the issue and seen a number of other people having the same problem, but I haven't found a fix yet.

I'm using the built in sqlite library on the Android platform.
I'm considering adding several general purpose fields that users will be able to use for their own custom applications, but these fields will be blank most of the time.
My question is, how much overhead will these blank fields add to my database? Do null fields even take up per record memory in sqlite? If so, how much? I don't quite understand the inner workings of a sqlite database.

I'm using the latest version of Google Maps on JB 4.2.2 [Nexus 4]..I noticed that I cannot edit the names of my locations in "My Places" in the phone app. So I used Google Bookmarks (google.com/bookmarks) from my PC to edit/rename My Places. However, the names do not sync or carry through to the Google Maps app on the phone. The names in the app are still the generic names, coordinates or street names.
Is there any way to change the names of My Places and get them to sync with the phone app? Really baffling!

when I want to stream one particular song I noticed that the Google Play Music app downloads and caches the previous/next few songs for quicker access. How can I prevent this? It uses a lot of data and I usually only want to listen to the one song I chose to stream.
For example if I play a 6 mb song i noticed it uses about 40 mb to stream just that one song. Then I selected a different song to stream and immediately went into settings > download queue and noticed it was loading more songs than the one I requested. I only want to listen to the 1 song I chose, so how can I prevent the other songs from loading? As far as I can see there is no way in the app's settings but there has to be another way to stop this inconvenience.
P.S. I have a T999 galaxy s3 running on stock rooted ICS

Short of freezing and unfreezing maps, can it be stopped? I have autostarts and Gemini app manager both attempting to keep maps from running, and it has reduced it drastically. But it still starts.
How to remove these associations? I only want maps to run if I ask it to, never any other time.

How come the i/phone has Google maps that show traffic (red/orange/green) But on the Droid 4, the standard google maps app does not have this traffic (sigalert) capability? Is it restricted to iphones only? I believe it is the same Google Maps app.

Q: What map areas are available Offline with Google Maps 6.9.0 for Android?
Background: With Google Maps 6.9.0 it is possible to make certain maps areas available offline. As for Europe, this seems to be dependant upon where you attempt to make this happen. Most of Croatia (except Zagreb) seems to be unavailable, same goes for most of Italy except major cities.
