Android :: Do Null SQLite Data Fields Take Up Extra Memory?

May 9, 2010

I'm using the built in sqlite library on the Android platform.

I'm considering adding several general purpose fields that users will be able to use for their own custom applications, but these fields will be blank most of the time.

My question is, how much overhead will these blank fields add to my database? Do null fields even take up per record memory in sqlite? If so, how much? I don't quite understand the inner workings of a sqlite database.

Android : ContentProvider Storage/memory - Data Can Be Stored In File System - In An SQLite Database

Oct 20, 2010

Please direct me to a description of the techniques that the ContentProvider employs to access data. I am trying to understand how it works as well as what is tunable or even if its meant to be tunable. It the memory management tiered, cached, virtual, flat? Is it file based, shmem based, stream based? Can there be a combination thereof?

Any information, suggestions, or references are welcome. The android fundamentals page says: "The data can be stored in the file system, in an SQLite database, or in any other manner that makes sense;" but the android ContenProvider page barely skins the onion.

Android :: Including Extra Sqlite Databases?

Oct 30, 2009

I have some external sqlite files I'd like to include with my app. It looks like I can add them to the /assets folder, then read them from there? Is the /assets folder the appropriate location for them?

I've used SQLiteOpenHelper to open databases my app creates at runtime, which just uses a unique db name. Will the sqlite files in the assets folder also be accessible using SQLiteOpenHelper in the same manner?

Android :: Add Custom Data And Fields To Contacts Screen In Droid?

I'm trying to add a custom data field and MIME type to the Contacts screen. Is there a way to do this such that when a user views a contact with my data saved on it, my field appears there? This is something I've seen other apps do--how do the Facebook, Twitter, Last.fm, etc. apps add their status information to contacts, for example? I can't seem to figure it out from the Contacts API documentation.

General :: Google Maps 6.10.0 And Extra Memory Consumption?

Aug 19, 2012

I own a (quite old now) Google Nexus One and I recently upgraded from Google Maps v6.9.0 to Google Maps v6.10.0

And I was quite surprised to see my user memory decrease a lot while the install apk is quite the same between both versions.

My Nexus One is rooted and running stock Android 2.3.6 (GB, not ICS)So I investigated and here is what I found about this new version of Google Maps.First, you must know that the memory available to the user to install new applications is mounted by the android system as '/data'.By running a 'du' command, I discovered that the following folder:

Code:
/data/data/com.google.android.apps.maps/app_
takes 11.9 Mo, which is a lot.[code].....

I want to store location data in sqlite. A latitude coordinate is a double, with 15 point precision. As far as I can tell this corresponds with the 'REAL' datatype which is 8 bytes. The alternative I suppose would be to store it as a String, and simply convert it back into a double later. Does it make any odds which way I go? Are there differences in storage capacity / efficiency?

The problem that i am having is that the new data i enter is not fetched, i.e nothing is new is being entered into the database.

this is the method i wrote in Data.java
myDataBase is an object of SQLiteDatabase
public void insertTitle(String Recipe)
ContentValues initialValues = new ContentValues();
initialValues.put(COLUMN_NAME,value);
myDataBase.insert(ZRECIPE, null, initialValues);
}
and i create an object "d" of it in Add.java, where i call the "insertTitle()" method. But nothing is inserted.

Android :: Inserting Large Volumes Of Data Into SQLite

Sep 2, 2009

I need to insert approximately one million rows of data (spread over 4 tables) - each row has one or two numeric fields, and two or three text fields (normally quite short). Single-column indexes on all the fields. After doing some tests on the emulator with a small test set, I extrapolated (assuming the last row will be inserted with a similar speed to the first row) my results to figure out that this would take about 15 hours (I have a Core 2 Duo running Vista). However, then I tried running the small test set on my Hero and I was surprised to see it run more than four times faster. I would guess it would take about 3 hours on the Hero. Alternatively, I could make the pre-populated database available as a download on the first run but this is likely to be a 120MB download. I have a few questions I'm hoping someone can help me with: 1. SQLite performance on the actual device being 4-5 times faster compared to the emulator - is this normal/expected? 2. Do the figures above generally sound fast/slow/normal (sorry this is so vague)? 3. From a user perspective - would it be best to provide a 120MB download or a 3 hour "first-time initialisation" step (plus 6MB download)?
