Many roms use custom host files for adblocking purposes. How could you deactivate that? I'm using CyberGR now and I don't like this tweak.
Large hosts, it slows dns requests.

I manage to edit my android's /etc/hosts file. Here's what I did:
1. Create an Android Virtual Device (AVD)
2. Open the AVD with this command

./emulator -avd android -partition-size 128
3. Execute the following commands

./adb remount
4. Get the android hosts file
Code:
./adb pull /etc/hosts
5. Add my mobile website into the android's hosts file. It looks like the following
Code:
127.0.0.1 localhost
172.19.14.46 m.myweb.localhost
6. Push the hosts file to the simulator
Code:
./adb push hosts /etc/hosts
7. Open the web mobile in the simulator and Host do not found. The web mobile should appear.
Btw I use Ubuntu 10.10 and android-sdk_r08-linux_86 API 7 (Android SDK 2.1)
why my hosts file gets reset after a reboot no matter whether I change with adaway or adblock or if I manually replace the hosts file myself and set to read only. Have searched about and only solution I read about was get a custom kernel. Although I am already on a custom kitkat ROM and using dorimanx kernel for galaxy s2. Also never had problems with hosts resetting on jb or ICS. Even creating a symlink to data/data/hosts doesn't work. On reboot the symlink just gets replaced with the original useless hosts file.

In "hosts" file i added line with text "1.1.1.1 customdomain" And then i used "ping customdomain" command in Terminal Emulator but i got error "unknown host am".

View 1 Replies View RelatedUsing AdAway v2.8 but end up getting stuck on the final step to enabling ad blocking, "Applying hosts file".
If you are trying to enable AdAway but are stuck on "Applying hosts file" as seen in the screenshot below:
1. Download a root explorer. I prefer using Root Explorer because I think its the best file explorer on the android market. If you have problems with purchasing apps you can always use the free version Explorer, or if you prefer using another file explorer that's fine, just make sure it has root access enabled.
2. Once you have a file explorer installed that has root access enabled, navigate to "system/etc" and find the file labeled "hosts" as seen in the screenshot below.
3. Hold down/select the file labeled "hosts" and select "permissions" from the selection as seen in the screenshot below.
4. After selecting permissions a window should have popped up where you can change the permissions of the file as seen in the screenshot below.
5. Change the permissions of the hosts file to "rw-rw-rw" just like in the screenshot below. Hit "OK" to apply the permission changes and close the file explorer completely and head back over to AdAway.
6. Once you have AdAway back open, click "Download files and apply ad blocking" and try again. Depending on your internet connection it shouldn't take very long, but you should see something like this, hit "Yes".
7. After your phone has rebooted, open AdAway again and you should see something like this saying newest hosts files enabled.
AdAway is now working and ad blocking is enabled!

Now I have managed to take apart the single .img file into multiple .img files, customized and rooted it with dsixda's kitchen and rebuild the ROM. Now my question is, can I somehow convert the zipped package back into the multiple .img files, or even into the single .img file so I can flash it with RKupdate or RKbatchtool? View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to edit the hosts file to access rest services in my local network. Using adb pull I am able to get the hosts file for the emulator and edit it. However I get the error "No space left on device" when I do an adb push.
Does anyone know how to resolve this issue? Can we increase the space for /system? If so how? Are there any other easier ways to access local area network (without creating a DNS server).
Using the original HTC messaging system and now Handcent (awesome app), it always defaults to XT9 to text, which I don't like. Can anyone advise me how to turn it off or change the setting for it? I've had a look but cant find where to change it.
Another small hindrance that I find with the messaging system (again with both) is the delay when entering two different letters from the same key using the phone keypad. I prefer the phone key pad and theres a delay which i find to long. Eg, if I enter A and want to enter B straight after that, the delay before I can do that I find to long.
(before question shout out to how great home ++ is) ok so i've tried ish some home replacements before(and by tried i mean installed didnt like look or quite get it and uninstall(when i first got phone)). i started to youtube home++ became very intrested and installed it and love it so far! great alternative i think everyone should try it out! ok now to question this is my first time posting so hello all! now that i have home++ installed i notice that my original "home screen" is always running in the background,so is there a way to "deactivate"(for lack of better terminology). doesnt it take up cpu/gpu resources and then new home screen does also in turn draining battery or slowing phone down? if no way to deactivate should i goto original and turn off stuff like live wallpapers and also remove any widgets that update regularly so i dont have it running twice?

Now that I've deactivated it, I am no longer able to use the android apps, or change things within the phone because on not being able to log into that account. The login page comes up with the old account asking me for my password, but of course, like I said, it is no longer in use, and it doesn't let me change the user name as I've made another goggle account. I have tried to change things in the settings, but all I've done it seems is to have screwed it up more.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI provide a small tool called PatternControl via the market that give the users the opportunity to temporary deactivate the Android "lock pattern" for a definable amount of time. With other words: After entering the pattern, the pattern becomes deactivated for i.e. 5mins and re activates it self afterwards. Until now (Android < 2.2) this was only possible by changing the settings directly, because there was no related API provided. (i.e.with something like set Boolean (Settings .System.LOCK_PATTERN_ENABLED, enabled)) It is clear that this in not a good way, but from my knowledge there was no alternative. My hope was, that Froyo would introduce a new API to handle things like that "legally". With the new security model of Android 2.2 writing to this kind of settings is now disallowed and the PolicyManager class seems just to offer password complexity options. So here is my question: Is there still any way to temporary deactivate the "lock pattern" as long as Android does not support such a delay functions natively?

View 10 Replies View RelatedI followed all the instructions on the other really long thread. I am having one issue though. I installed SDK and the drivers, that all went perfect. The only issue I am having is with the actual bootanimation.zip. I am thoroughly stuck. After I download a bootanimation.zip it shows up in winrar with 4 files (loading, eye, android, and the desc.txt) I know it has to go in tools. I am just not sure how? Do I add each folder or is there a way to add them all? I also know the name has to be bootanimation.zip. I tried a few different ways and pushed it to my Inc. But I cant get it to boot with the animation.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've got a library of short snippet/sound effect .mp3's that I've created over the years to use with my cell phones. They've always worked with my Droid through 2.1, but two things happen on every Froyo ROM I've tried (BB 0.1-0.4). First, when browsing (with astro) to the mediaaudio
otifications folder I can see them and play them once. The second time I attempt to play them, the very beginning of the file plays then stops. Second, these files are no longer listed in the notifications settings/options like they used to be.
If I flash back to 2.1, everything is peaches. Back to 2.2 and same behavior, though everything else in the ROM seems to be running fine, even music. I'm guessing Froyo looks for notifications in a new place within the file system, but I can't find it. Can anyone point me in the right direction, and also shed light why the .mp3's that play fine in 2.0 and 2.1 won't in 2.2?

View 2 Replies View Relatedgot a Samsung Galaxy S4 (for several years I had iPhones) and I am enjoying it. Now that I have gotten all my music files away from iTunes' clunky clutches I have reorganized them and they are on my S4's sim card and it works great.
The issue is that I have updated a few of the files and moved a couple more around. I want to update those music files on my S4 from my PC. I could just delete the Music folder on the S4 and recopy everything over, but that seems to be a huge overkill.
What is a good way to compare files between my S4 and folders on the PC and match/update between the two? I am using Windows 7. I have tried to map the Sim Card as a drive but couldn't get that to work. I have Kies from Samsung but that is kinda clunky. I have also tried AirDroid (which I think is great) but I can't really sync files with that. Normally I would use a Windows application like Beyond Compare or WinMerge to do something like this.
I am on a standard website that has a normal upload button, I need to upload a PDF file, But when I click on the upload button on the web site a popup window from my Android phone appears and says "Choose action" and gives me access to the gallery, camcorder, voice recorder , choose music track, gallery (again), select music track and voice recorder (again).
I need to some how get access to my SD card and my download folder to be able to pick the the pdf file that I need to upload. I have tried this both on the default internet browser and Google Chrome, but both give the same options.
