Nexus :: Using Home Replacement - Deactivate
Feb 3, 2010
(before question shout out to how great home ++ is) ok so i've tried ish some home replacements before(and by tried i mean installed didnt like look or quite get it and uninstall(when i first got phone)). i started to youtube home++ became very intrested and installed it and love it so far! great alternative i think everyone should try it out! ok now to question this is my first time posting so hello all! now that i have home++ installed i notice that my original "home screen" is always running in the background,so is there a way to "deactivate"(for lack of better terminology). doesnt it take up cpu/gpu resources and then new home screen does also in turn draining battery or slowing phone down? if no way to deactivate should i goto original and turn off stuff like live wallpapers and also remove any widgets that update regularly so i dont have it running twice?

When using a home replacment like Helix, Home++, etc. does the android home still run in the background and reduce performance? I had a lot of stuff on my stock home but just switched to Helix so how do i stop/disable stock home if it is running?

I have been working on a replacement for the stock Car Home app for a bit, and I am completely stumped on how to override the Home button so that my app will be brought back to the foreground whenever the phone is docked. This is the way that Car Home works, so there must be a way. It seems that BroadcastReceivers won't work, because the intent that is broadcast whenever the Home button is pressed will still cause the default homescreen app to launch; I cannot prevent it. I can override the Home button from within my app, but that does me no good since this needs to work when the user is outside my app. Car Home also does not do anything weird like set itself as the default homescreen app while it's running (I checked the logcat to make sure).
I've been really beating my head against the wall on this. Does anyone have any ideas, or can you at least point me in the right direction?

I got a replacement Nexus One yesterday and it came with 2.2 installed. My original N1 had an OTA update to 2.2.1. How do I pull a new 2.2.1 update? I have searched but the one link reported to have the update is no longer valid: http://android.clients.google.com/packages/passion/signed-passion-FRG83-from-FRF91.c8847c98.zip
So will my new N1 eventually automatically get an OTA, or does Google think I already have my OTA, or what? I guess I'll try to contact HTC and see what the story is.
Even more annoying is that the replacement didn't fix the problem, which is that my Nexus One DOESN'T WORK AT THE OFFICE anymore. At first I thought it was because I dropped the phone (actually, it was knocked out of my hand on the airport bus by a clumsy person who let go of their suitcase). So I was glad to get a warranty replacement for free. But the new phone, just like the original one, doesn't get signal. Wifi still works, albeit Marketplace downloads are erratic and don't always work.

I just starting trying out other home replacement apps. Sence seems to be the best. I would like to try home++. I think its only for 1.6 because I can't find it in the market. What are you thoughts on home replacements for the Sprint Hero.

Does anyone know of any good home replacements on 1.5? I've only used sense, home, and slidescreen, none of which I am super happy with. Helix Launcher looks great, but I think is only 2.1.

I know there have been a few threads on home replacements but I ran across one the other day (don't know if it's been mentioned here before) called LauncherPro. It is by far the fastest most stable home replacement I have ever used. It is in the market so I suggest you check it out if you are looking for something different!

Just found this one on the market last night, its called PandaHero-Hero Style, by Honeybee apps. It is an actual full app that makes the phone almost exactly like a HTC-Hero. I love it so far, so easy to use and looks really good, it is pretty intuitive.

I cooked this up and wanted to share. By following the instructions here I was able to customize my N1 homescreen with the 3rd greatest British rock band; The Who! You will need ADW or LauncherPro and Desktop Visualizer and of course photo editing skills if you want to make a custom screen.

If you have a home replacement, could you swap it with Launcher.apk and have it be the only one running, or would that not work?

Just picked up a Fascinate for my wife and as we all know it's infested with Bing (until the 2.2 update). I have installed google search etc and its mostly running like her Eris was BUT the car home app that pops up when you place the phone in the car mount is the Samsung Bing app. The icons point to VZ navigator etc and she is like WTF I can't get the nav to work. Anyone know the easiest way (here come the "root the phone man....." comments) to disable the car home or replace it will the stock google one?

I have installed my Webview app as home replacement and now my app is loaded after Android reboot. (I do this only for test). Now I can't close my application and I can't uninstall it . (This was what I wanted, but not now!! my application was still under development. ) How I can now uninstall it and return to the default home? The only thing I can think of is to update the firmware, but this is my last option.

Is it possible to launch other apps from my app like the application launcher or home screen do? I don't want to try a home replacement app. At least would a widget on home screen be able to launch other applications? Also can a widget on the (default) home screen receive swipe events (before a touch event)?

Funny topic maybe, but I feel like I have a decent hold on app development, widget development, and even made a game. I'd like to tinker with creating a home screen replacement but havn't been able to dig up any examples or good places to start. Does anyone have any recommendations or links that might help out?

The Android Applications forum keeps misleading me because people talk about apps and features that aren't available in Android 1.5, so I thought I'd ask the other Moment owners about home replacement apps. I think I'd like something, but I'm really hesitant to pay for one that I may not like, and I also worry that I'd not really understand all I could do with one and therefore not truly appreciate it.
I've also seen very mixed reviews on nearly every home replacement app.
So I'm curious about the opinions of other Moment owners on these home replacement apps and also if there are any good places for thorough information on them.

Since I'm on a 2.1 ROM with live wallpapers and a 7 screen 2.0.1 home, I thought I'd give stock home a chance. I couldn't even last the whole day - as soon as I got to work I switched it back over to sweeterhome. I'll live with the rare FCs and the long slow buggy bootups for now Anyone else addicted to their home replacement?

I've found this great home replacement app called launcherpro that is wayyy faster and smoother than the sense home. I currently have this set as my default home, so I just pull up taskiller to kill off sense and free up some memory. Even though I kill sense off with taskiller I see that sense has started back up every once and awhile and was wondering both why it starts back up and whether there is a way to stop it from doing so? Also, will killing sense like this lead to any problems down the road?

Which is the most highly recommended? I hear that both Home++ and Sweeter Home are good. I'd like something that looks like Sense UI if possible.

I'm looking for an app that allows me to have more than 5 screens on my nexus one. Currently I have home++ but it doesn't allow for live wallpapers and the app selection is really outdated looking imo. I tried launcher++ but it too had the app selection ugliness.
What i really want is a home replacement that mimics the normal launcher on 2.1 but has extra screens. I don't need anything fancy, i just want more screens and perhaps an infinity scroll feature. is there anything like that? even a custom rom maybe? does cyanogen offer more screens?
