General :: Automatic Timezone Incorrect On WiFi?
Apr 22, 2014
I'm testing a hybrid phone/scanner that came from China and I noticed the time was wrong on it (we don't use the phone part), so I went into time settings and it was set to automatic date & time and timezone, but when I turned off automatic timezone it said it was still China even though I've been using the device for a week. When I look up our IP on the web it says it's in the US in the correct state so I don't understand why Android is not locating the phone by IP.
I've noticed on other Android phones the time randomly goes incorrect when off cell service (like on my old Droid 2 or Galaxy Tab which I keep the cell service off for), so this appears to be a bug in Android. Is there a way I can smack the phone so it does it automatically or do I always have to expect Google not to do this right and make me have to manually set the timezone (and sometimes the time)?

I have been lurking for a few months now but have finally registered as i have an issue i just cant figure out. Me and the wife both have a Desire. When the time is set to automatically update from the network it keeps changing to GMT -8 Las Vegas time. it even says Las Vegas in the current clock.(and i cant delete it We have never manually changed the clock to Vegas time. The freaky thing is that we used to live in Las Vegas, BUT we didn't get our Desire's until moving back to the UK. I have made sure all my router, modem and PC settings are all GMT UK Time. the only thing that i can think is it is Gmail doing it as we made our Gmail account whilst in Las Vegas. its very annoying as when it changes to Vegas time obviously all our alarms and calender entries go "pete tong".
Also if i set the clock to manual it loses time pretty quickly as i left the wifes on auto and mine manual and within a few days mine had dropped 2 or 3 mins. We have the same gmail account synced to both phones. we also use Launcher Pro I thnk that is all the info i have for now.

I have several remembered WiFi SSIDs on my Droid, including my home WiFi and one for the local library, which are at least 4 miles apart. I just discovered that my Droid is indicating I am connected to the public library WiFi (as shown in my settings screen), when I'm actually connected to my home WiFi. Just to make sure before posting this, I used Network Discovery to confirm that the devices visible to my Droid were the devices on my home WiFi. Other than the incorrect SSID display, the connection seems fine.

Is there an app that will automatically recognize when I am near my bluetooth headset (which I keep in the car) and turn bluetooth on, then off again when I am out of range? Same for my home wifi? I typically turn one off and the other on when I leave the house or come home. Any way to automate it? I know there are ones where you can schedule it, but I don't have a predictable schedule, so that won't work for me.

I just acquired my first proper smart phone, the HTC desire, and am quite pleased so far.I am looking for an application, widget or setting that automatically updates my gmail, weather, news and whatnot when I connect to a wifi hotspot.If this can't be done automatically I guess a simple button on my home-screen would do.Any tips are greatly appreciated.

Here is my current code:
Code:
TimeZone tz = TimeZone.getDefault();

The method setText(CharSequence) in the type TextView is not applicable for the arguments (TimeZone). I understand the error, but I do not know how to convert the Timezone to "Eastern Standard Time" or "Pacific Standard Time" or whatever the case may be.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S, running Froyo. I have an issue with WiFi handover, so I am posting here (in addition to the SGS section) in case this is an Android issue rather than an SGS-specific issue. I have two WiFi Access Points (APs) at home, both using the same SSID, but on different channels.
I expected the SGS to automatically move (handover) from one AP to another based on signal strengths that vary depending on where I am. However, this does not happen. It stays on the AP that it is connected to, even when moving to very poor signal levels. I need to manually trigger this (e.g by disconnecting from the AP). Any configuration or Android app. By the way, I also tried configuring the APs with different SSIDs, but this didn't work either.

My Active Applications Widget is incorrect. It now says 0 on the Widget, but clicking on it and opening the program shows "Active applications: 4" and it lists the 4 apps that I have recently used.
Why is the Widget wrong? It worked when I first put it there.

I bought a Sandisk 32gb (4) micro sd and downloaded the n2a jelly bean 4.2.2.My issue is that it keeps 27gb fat 32 which my nook can't see. It says I have an 800mb partition and a 5gb one in device manager.
On the nook it says total storage 5gb? Where has my 27 Gb gone? And as it's booting off a card why is it telling me it's internal memory too? When I boot to the stock nook o/s it says 12gb left out of 16. Why does my n2a boot up not tell me I have 27 left out of 32??
I have rebuilt card and partitioned it to one big partition before building the image but still totally confused as to what's going on??

I have had a samsung galaxy s3 for about a week now, and everything has been working on it fine until today. Suddenly one of my email accounts decided that it had the wrong password (a University email address); I tried deleting the address and re-adding but now it won't let me add it as it says that the address or password is incorrect.
As i know the password is right and really need this email address to work!

How is the operating system getting these numbers? If I'm using 2+ GB on Rdio alone, how am I below 2gb of data during the month so far? I'm on Solavei so I have 4gb of 4g before it gets throttled and it would suck to get throttled and have no idea how much data I've actually used.

I'm working on a CM port and currently facing issues with vold. For some weird reason, vold isn't mounting storage devices as it should. Here is my current vold.fstab file:
Code:
dev_mount flash /storage/sdcard0 auto /devices/platform/mtd/mtd8/media nonremovable
dev_mount sdcard /storage/sdcard1 auto /devices/platform/AMLOGIC_CARD/card_host/memorycard0.
Using adb I can confirm that everything is mounted correctly and also I can browse the files. Using applications (even MediaScanner) fails with permission errors. This is how I'm creating the storage folders, for user/permissions reference:
Code:
# Create mountpoints
mkdir /mnt 0775 root system
export EXTERNAL_STORAGE /storage/sdcard0
export SECONDARY_STORAGE /storage/sdcard1
mkdir /storage 0550 system sdcard_r
mkdir /storage/sdcard0 0000 system system
mkdir /storage/sdcard1 0000 system system
[code]....
I have also noticed that the system reports different owner/group/permissions through adb and Terminal Emulator. Here are the outputs:
Code:
root@android:/ # ls -la /storage/
d---rwxr-x system sdcard_rw 1970-01-01 02:00 sdcard0
d---rwxr-x system sdcard_rw 1970-01-01 02:00 sdcard1
d--------- system system 2013-09-05 02:29 usbdisk0
[code]....
I'm suspecting storage_list.xml, but I checked mine and seems correct. Also, it doesn't define permissions, so I excluded that.How can I further debug this? Logcat doesn't show anything useful, everything seems fine with vold.

I'm searching for an app (or hack, or whatever) which allows me to do custom actions when there are too many incorrect unlocking attempts. For example, when 5 incorrect patterns are entered, get the location and send it to a remote web server. In my case, I would like to start Cerberus tracking, but that's not the main point.
Is there an app, or custom lock screen, or any security app that allows me to do this?

In a WIP for create a CWM for Galaxy Music GT-S6010 I doing a wrong operation.
First at all I've dumped the recovery of my phone and used CWM builder online, but the recovery didn't work.
I have founded a recovery of another smartphone that I think has similar hardware, the GT-S5310. I have flashed the CWM recovery of this other phone and the result is:
1) The CWM work. It seems to work well.
2) The touch screen behavior is bad. Is incorrect and inverted. In some point when touch with one finger the result give two touch.
I think that the problem is software not hardware, because with bluetooth mouse and keyboard the phone work well.
I have already tried many times, in this order:
1) restore the original recovery;
2) flash the stock firmware;
3) flash the CWM, doing a clean cache, format /sysem, format /cache, clean dalvik cache;
But not solved.

I meet a strange timezone issue when I debug my application on Android_2.1 SDK. I first start the emulator and set timezone to "Alaska" in Settings. I also search the internet and find Alaska is in GMT-9:00. If DST applied, it should be GMT-8:00. Then write some sample code like: TimeZone.getDefault().getOffset(0); // returns 36000000 (= 10 * 60 * 60 * 1000) TimeZone.getTimeZone("GMT-9:00").getOffset(0); // returns 32400000 (= 9 * 60 * 60 * 1000)
How does this happen? Why this same API getOffset with same parameter returns different value? You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Android Developers" group. I am trying to get phone's correct timezone. I tried String newTzID = Calendar.getInstance().getTimeZone().getID(); This is returning "America/Atikokan". But my phone's timezone is EST. Both of these have an offset of GMT -5 hours. But I actually need to differentiate between EST and "America/Atikokan", since "America/ Atikokan" doesn't have day light savings time. Is there a way to get the correct id?

to dear all Android developers, I need to know the UTC bias of my phone to correct the UTC time information I got from a site. I have read earlier posts and already found the solution to get TimeZone information from the "System.currentTimeMillis();" method. However, I need to translate the TimeZone (as like, "Asia/Taipei") to the UTC bias that it has to be (as like, "UTC+8" or other formats). Does anyone know the actual API solution? I have surveyed android.util.TimeUtils and found nothing to do this. The worst solution may I have is to build a "TimeZone/UTC" database table to translate this..

I've written an Android app that needs the short timezone name in which the handset is currently located.I'm using the following code: String timeZone = Calendar.getInstance().getTimeZone().getDisplayName(false, TimeZone.SHORT);When running in Chicago, this returns "CST". In New York, "EST". In Strasbourg, France, it's returning "HNEC" (Heure Normale de l'Europe Centrale in French).
The timezone in this location is referred to by some as "Central European Time" (see Wikipedia's Time zones of Europe).I'm passing timeZone off to a third-party system which very much insists on getting "CET" (not "HNEC"). Is there an API call I can rely on to return the three-letter (and, I think, "more modern") short timezone name? As my code runs in more and more locations, I'm guessing this problem is going to occur elsewhere, too. I'm really hoping to avoid maintaining some sort of map of three-letter to four-letter short timezone names.

the different timezones you cannot always answer in 24 hours, but atm I am really asking myself in which timezone do you actually live? Is it in a parallel universe where the time lasts forever? That would definitively explain why you only post 1 answer in a week. OK answer might be the wrong word, you sum up the obvious. So Jeff plz tell me that I am right otherwise you should perhaps rethink if you are the right person for this job.
