I can't use Emoji on my SGS! I have installed the add-on dictionary Emoji for English words but refresh it and it disappears. I'm using the default AOSP keyboard on CM10.1 on English (UK).

I'm not sure if it works on other devices I'm using an OV running cai. you won't need any messaging app other than stock. So go into your stock messaging app, and hit the menu button. Go into settings, and find emojis support, and check that. Then right above that (on my phone) check the option that says Unicode support. These options both are under extra settings!
Now to get the emojis go your messaging, go into a new message or one that your already talking to (your girl , hit the menu button and it gives the option the insert smiley's and the option to insert emojis! The rest is easy

How can I change the emoji icons used? The Android logo based ones are frankly naff. Plain graphics, or even old school characters would be much preferred.

Can we somehow get android 4.4 color emoji on Android 4.2.2? I don't mind replacing some system files. Obviously Apple emojis would be cool, but they use some proprietary stuff in the ttf file.

Softbank Japan has just released an sms/mms app that allows sending and receiving emoji! I just tested with my wife's iphone, and I could send emoji fine with my HTC Desire (Softbank x06HT), and I could receive it fine! A big selection of emoji too, maybe the complete set that Softbank usually includes on their other phones. It is buggy and a bit clunky, but it's a *lot* better than nothing! Lots of complaining in the comments section, but I don't think it's that bad. Now, the big question: Is it available in other markets? I'm in Japan right now, and I searched for "Softbank" in the market and I found it... It's called "Softbank メール". The link that they sent me in a news SMS is: "http://market.android.com/search?q=jp.softbank.mb.mail". They also say it is Froyo only...
Lastly, for those who have been in Japan a while and have an @softbank.ne.jp or @x.vodafone.ne.jp (like me) can now use those mails on their phones as well, inside the app. I sent myself a message and received it fine, and when I replied it sent from my old vodafone mail address (although I haven't figured out how to choose between SMS and e-mail for sending yet). EDIT: Figured it out, just type in a phone number (or choose from contacts) to send an SMS, type in an e-mail address to send from your @softbank or @vodafone address. Swet. I'll see if I can post the full message, for those who can read Japanese (I can't read very much of it, only hiragana/katakana).

It seems there is a general voice search / voice recognition issue with non-english languages. The problem is basically that punctuation is written in plain and not recognized. It seems to affect a number of devices (if not all?) running ICS / JB.
So period will write "period" and not "." .
Same for comma that will end in writing "comma" and not ",".
(this of course in each different Language)
This basically makes the voice recognition totally unusable and useless for anything but English. So far, this issue has been reported with the following languages:
French
German
Spanish
Italian
I'm not allowed to post links yet but if you go to Android official project page, in the Issues and search for punctuation, you'll basically see all those.

I have a GNex. But have my phone in German. Because of this Google Search and Google Now are also in german.
And Google voice no longer talks back to me. Even though I have changed my setting(or so I think) to english. Google Now still defaults to giving me search results for google.de
Is there a way I can keep my phone in german, but have my voice search talk and answer in english?

My application has resources files in English and French and works on Android 1.5 and >.
Inside the emulator, in Settings > Locale & Text > Select Locale, I can choose English or French. This updates the language of my application.
However, when I use the Android Dev Phone 1, only English is available in the "Select Locale" screen...
Is it possible to install french locale on Android Dev Phone 1 ? If so, how can I do this ?

I'm new to Android development and have just started playing with the SDK.
One thing that is annoying is that the emulator always start with Japanese settings. I have found out how to fix this by going into settings and remove all the Japanese stuff, but this is time consuming since I have to do it every time I start the emulator.
Can someone help me change the startup settings for the emulator?

Hence, I would like to contribute to the Android project to help render it. However, since I have just started I have no ideas of where to look for and begin with !
To be very precise, I would like to contribute for proper rendering of Nepali Language (Devanagari Script) for the Android OS. For ex. I would like to be able to see the following in an Android device rendered properly......................

So I'm trying to figure out how I can get English (United States) set up on my new Hero. I've looked through the Locale Text settings and found a few English settings, but they were all for Poland or Czech or wherever, no US. With my current setting, it connects me to UK versions of sites, and apps like ShopSavvy returns products in Pounds. I want USD please.Does anyone have a solution for this?
