Android :: Which Folders Can Safely Access In A Droid Device

Jan 15, 2010

I know that we can safely write to /data/data/app_package... however, can the application also create folders and maybe access other folders as well, such as system? I could easily create an application to test that, but what i really want to know if the official Android approach to this issue. I don't want to assume something that will be changed in the future.

HTC Droid Eris : Sd Card Folders - Access Other Folders With Saved Data

Feb 17, 2010

I usually view email with attachments from my pc because I usually lack the time to download the attachment. Today, I had some spare time so I tried to download an attachment. It downloaded fine but when I went to view it, I received a pop-up box to save it to the sd card. After pressing ok, I was told the save was successful but now I can't find it. Aside from pics and videos, how do I access other folders with saved data?

HTC Desire :: HTC Mail Emptied IMAP Folders On Device

Aug 31, 2010

For some reason, my inbox for my IMAP connection to the office email decided to empty itself on my Desire (2.1).An email arrived and I opened the inbox (not the email) and my inbox was empty.I have just popped in to the office (day off - typical!) and all my email is still there so it's not a total loss, just a little confusing since everything was working sweetly. The email server is based on an OS X 10.6.4 server in the office (not that this should have anything to do with it really).I've been through checking the settings and they're all OK. Only thing I haven't tried is removing the account and putting it back on. Might give that a try later on.

Motorola Droid :: Minimum Required For Root Access - Any Device

Aug 11, 2010

All this talk about different rooting methods and how some are unreliable makes me want to learn exactly what's required.

So far from looking at different exploits and methods to root different phones, the most simplest to understand is Peter Alfonso's Galaxy S rooting method posted today it seems all you need is to find a way on your device to install the following:

/system/bin/su (is this included in stock and replaced or just doesn't exist in stock systems?)
/system/app/Superuser.apk (it seems the Android OS has a "super user access" intent that this listens for -- so when apps try to access su this picks app it up?)

Motorola Droid : No SetCPU - Non Root Access To Device Correct?

Mar 16, 2010

I have a probably silly and stupid question. I did the sbf file to bring my phone back to stock (I have to give my phone to a family member, long story). Anyway, when I did the sbf file it recovered all my apps, and one of them was SetCPU.

SetCPU won't run unless it has root access correct? I mean the fact that it was installed (and then uninstalled) it can't change anything without root access to the device correct?

Samsung Fascinate :: Access Fascinate's System Files - Folders

Oct 18, 2010

I have a rooted Fascinate. Using ES file explorer I was able to view system folders and found the system media files containing ringtones, notification tone, etc. However, I can not edit the files there or paste new files in there. I cannot find the system folder when I connect the fascinate to a computer. I tried showing "hidden files" but the folders still would not show up.

What I want to do is add my downloaded ringtones into the system media folder so that I can use those ringtones without having those ringtones appear in my music player. Another post tried to deal with this issue of the music player recognizing ringtones and notification tones, but no one could provide an actual solution to the problem. If I could move ringtones from the media folder on the SD to card to the media folder in the system folder, this would solve the problem.

Can anybody access the system folders in a manner that I can add files to the folders.

EDITED: PROBLEM SOLVED.
With the help given below, I came up with a solution, and have pasted instructions directly below.
Here are the steps I did in case any one else is interested.

Once your phone is rooted, it's pretty simple.
1)Download Root Explorer from the Market. Root explorer will give you the ability to edit folders/files that normally can't be edited, ie read and write permission as opposed to read only.

2)Using Root Explorer (make sure in top left of program it says "mounted as r/w"), copy any ringtone, notification file, .ogg file, .mp3 file, etc that you have made or downloaded, by selecting sdcard folder and navigating to the location of your tones, long pressing the file of interest, and select copy. (You can even long press on the folder and copy the whole folder of tones).

3)Still using Root Explorer, back out of the SD folder, and find the folder called "system". Navigate to system/media/audio/"ringtones" or "notifications" . Click the paste button at the bottom of the screen (which should have appeared as soon as you copied your file/folder). The file/folder will now be in your system's tone folder.

4)You must power down and power back up your phone before the phone will recognize these newly added tones.

5)Either delete the tone files from your SD card, or put a .nomedia file into the folder to remove them from the SF's media player.

General :: IPv6 Access From Host To Android Device?

Jan 1, 2012

I'm trying to connect from a host (PC or other) to a mobile cellular Android device on the Verizon/AT&T cellular network. This device uses only the 3G network and has its Wi-Fi turned off. The Android device has a listening socket and I need the remote host to be the connection initiator. As far as I know, Verizon/AT&T uses NAT traversal for mobile phones and assigns local IP addresses to them on the cellular network. This prevents me from initiating a connection to the device from a remote host.

With the usage of IPv6 assignments there shouldn't be any practical limitation (virtually unlimited) to the number of "real" IPs that can be assigned. Therefore my questions are:

1. Does the Verizon/AT&T cellular network support IPv6 and assigns IPv6 addresses to capable Android devices?

2. Does Android 2.2+ have enough support for IPv6 to implement such solution?

I am aware of other methods that can be used, such as C2DM, but it has some drawbacks (such as unknown response time) that prevent me from using it.

General :: TCP / IP Access To Windows 7 PC From Android Device Using USB Cable

Aug 14, 2013

Is it possible to have a TCP/IP access to Windows 7 PC from Android device (create a LAN between them) using just direct connection via USB cable, without wifi or bluetooth? I already have it working using wifi, but I am also interested in just USB cable way.

I do _not_ need to use PC's internet connection, I only want to access the PC itself. I want to access HTTP/FTP/SSH servers on the PC and its samba (Windows Network) shares via Android CifsManager app.

Is this possible using "reverse tethering" solution which is used to access PC's internet connectivity on Android device and uses some 3rd party app? Is there a simpler solution without using 3rd party apps? Is this possible somehow via adb?

My Android device uses Android 4.0.3 and is rooted. My Windows version is Windows 7 64-bit.

Android :: Mobile 'Web Wrapper' Framework Allowing Device Access To A Remote Site?

Jan 3, 2010

When I first ran across PhoneGap, I was excited because I envisioned simply dropping in the URL of a mobile site and simply updating the mobile site to use the devices capabilities when available.

Alas, it seems it is not that easy.

From what I understand (and I could be incorrect), any HTML/JS access to the device's hardware is limited to local 'pages'. So essentially create a HTML/JS local 'web' app to access the 'real' mobile web app by AJAX like calls. It seems a little redundant (at least to me) when the point is to simply extend the interface an existing mobile site.

Not trying to knock PhoneGap here, just wondering if there's a similar framework that allows a remote site to access the phone's hardware directly. Or if I've missed how that can be done with PhoneGap.

(Sure, I know "allows a remote site to access the phone's hardware directly" sounds scary - but the URL is hard-coded in the app, and HTTPS could provide authenticity. Of course, security is probably why this isn't supported by PhoneGap.)

HTC Hero :: RA V1.5.3.1 Cant Get ADB Access Device Malfunctioned

Mar 7, 2010

Just wondering if there is a way out of my situation, last night I installed the latest recovery image (RA-hero-v1.5.3.1), prior to that I put the latest Villian Rom on to update, but I think I messed things up, with some of the new menus in the Recovery rom as I accidently hits a few things Messages I'm getting are on almost every option I try is : E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0 (no such file or directory)and E:Can't mount SDCARD:/nandroid/If I try any other options aswell I get "Error: Run 'bart' via adb" which is no good when I get the adb messages as for some reason my windows 7 pc has stopped detecting the phone in adb mode?! The normal Hero bootloader get's detected fine in windows, is there anything I can do here to restore the system. I think some messages flashed by saying missing image! Which don't sound good.UPDATE: Some more details: was messing around with the new partition options in the recovery menu, wasn't meant to actually use them but one of them went through and done some partitioning or something, so I think I screwed it up there somehow. Maybe my SD card needs formatting in a certain way(which I don't know), I have my original SD card contents backed up with nandroid backup but was done with an older version of the recovery image. Also, when I mount the SD card in Windows there is one partition that I cannot remove or format etc. hope all this helps in a solution.Any ideas on how I can fix this? Sorry for lack of phone details, as I can't get any info due to no rom being installed. But it's a HTC Hero, SIM Free, Not sprint, Latest kernel as im aware, latest recovery image(recovery-RA-hero-v1.5.3.1.img).
