Motorola Droid X :: Safely Delete The VZW Backup Assistant?
Jul 18, 2010
Is it possible to safely delete the VZW backup assistant?
It seems unnecessary as I have my contacts in Gmail, and it won't even sink now anyway...
I know I can just set it to not sync, but I can't stand knowing that it is there, doing nothing...
Can this be done without damaging any of the phones information?

I just got the Droid X, realized there were so much Bloatware and used Titanium Backup to remove a lot of it. I got happy fingers and before I know it Backup Assistant was gone.
THEN>>>>I read on the forum that if I delete this my phone could brick in the future.
I've since reinstalled it from a download off the forums (thanks guys). But I'm not sure if I have the correct versions as now I have both version 2.1-update1 AND version 1.0
Would someone with an unmolested/virgin Droid X running Android 2.2 verify for me:
How many versions of the Backup Assistance Apps are running on your phone? Just one or both? And please verify the version for me.

I don't use this app, but noticed it is running when I check running applications. I must have opened it at one time. Can I stop this application from running or is it needed by other applications?

Anyone else having issues with Backup Assistant. Mine has not worked in over a month. Everytime it is scheduled to run I get a message that says incorrect PIN. I know the PIN I'm using is correct, I click on "forgot PIN" and get the same number I'm using. VZW tells me it is a "KNOWN PROBLEM" but apparently in over a month they haven't been able to fix it. It worked to begin with when I got the DX, how can something like this happen. If they made changes that didn't work, can't they change it back?

I rooted my X last night. I removed some apps and took out Backup Assistant. I had a 1.0 2.2 version of Backup Assistant. I took out the 1.0 and kept 2.2. I wish I had kept the original version. Does anybody know where I can get Backup Assistant apk?

Anyone know how to un-sync or remove Backup Assistant from the Droid 2? I am helping my mom setup her phone and she had the guys down at Verizon swap all her contacts from her old phone to her Droid 2, but now she wants it undone. I know nothing about Backup Assistant and how it works...the contact setup is different from my phone(Moto Droid)

Rooting and Titanium backup so wanted to throw that out to you all.
Anyway, I was messing with freezing stuff in Titanium backup, and I wanted to freeze the VZW Backup Assistant. It worked, but in the process when I rebooted the phone, all of my contacts were gone.
Now in Titanium, there are two versions appearing. 1.0 and 2.2. (I froze both). When I defrosted them and rebooted the phone, the backup app came back. When I tried to sync (thinking it will pull whatever I had in my Verizon account, it did not). I guess it just syncs what you have on the phone vs. pulling down when you have online.
Anyway, just logged into my VZW account and all my contacts are indeed gone.
Now, is there something hidden somewhere in the phone where I can get them back? A file or something?
If not then...
I have my Droid Incredible (not activated at the moment) with all of my contacts. Is there a file or way to export that data from my Incredible and import it back into my X?
If you need any more questions answered please let me know. Worst case scenario is I have to manually add them all back. I chalk it up as a learning experience.

I am new to android and made the mistake of enabling the backup assistant. It serves no purpose when I already have all my contacts on Google.
It is frustrating me because it does a daily sync and is constantly running on my phone. I searched and found help with removing from an Inc but their menu options are different and I couldn't get it to work.
How to get rid of it after making the mistake of installing it?

The first step in the activation of my new Droid 4 instructs me to download Motorola's Backup Assistant to my current phone before proceeding any further, warning me that I will lose my contacts if I do not do so. My Droid has none of the menu items referred to in the download process instructions. How do I proceed? I can't afford to lose my phonebook.

Will Droid work with Verizon's Backup Assistant to backup contact list, or sync with Google(gmail/gtalk) Contacts?Or, both? The backup assistant costs $1.99 a month, or something like that, but is waived if on Premium plan.I'll be dropping down to the "Connect" plan since don't need VZ-Navigator option anymore, which would mean I'd have to start paying the $1.99 for Backup Assistant, or I assume for FREE sync to Google contacts?

I uploaded about 50 pictures from iPhoto (using a Mac) just to see what they looked like and then later formatted the Droid's SD card, so the pictures were no longer there.
Now, if I mount the Droid via USB and view the file structure there is a folder named /albumthumbs which contains 50 files, presumably for the 50 pictures a had on the SD card.
To me, these file, unless linking to actual photos stored on the SD card, take up extra space in the phone's memory (not worried about the SD card). I wonder if I can safely delete them (just the files...not the folder)?

Last night I donated and am just waiting for the paid version now, but I have a couple of questions:
1. What exactly is "freezing" an app? Will it remove the app from the app drawer? Will it just prevent it from running?
2. Can I use Titanium backup to delete apps that are safe for delete like amazon.mp3, etc?
3. If I "freeze" an app like backup assistant will it still be on the phone so that it doesn't brick if I do a reset?
4. Can I delete or freeze things like crap ringtones so they don't show up when I am setting a ringtone?

I am trying to backup my current contact on my dumbphone, but I'm having trouble doing it. I can't get backup assistant by going to "get it now" on my phone and when I try to send backup assistant to my phone on verizon's website, it will only let me send it to the primary account number (i'm on a family plan) and not my number.

I have a question about how the Backup Assistant works. I currently have an LG Dare and have Backup Assistant on it. I will be getting my DINC in mid-July (hopefully! ). I assume that I will be able to simply download the backup assistant app on the DINC and update all of the contacts from the Dare, is that correct? I really don't want to have to set up all of these contacts again.

Total newbie with basic questions about backing up contacts using VW Backup Assistant. I had all my contacts copied over to my new Fascinate and all my Gmail contacts info also got synched up. I just wanted the contacts with phone numbers to show up in my Contacts list and so selected the option that displays Contacts this way.
Now the backup service seems to only back up 4 contacts (#BAL, #DATA, #MIN, #PMT) and none of my actual contacts. how to get all my contacts synched up with the online Backup Assistant?

How to disable / turn off Verizon Backup Assistant without a factory reset (and Use gmail contacts sync only - recommended!)
Also in post #3 below: How to Sync Contacts with Gmail and Change Contact type from Phone to Google
Disabling Backup Assistant on the HTC Droid Incredible There may be other ways to disable backup assistant, but follow these steps to remove duplicate contacts and backup assistant without having to factory reset. Please be aware that I just tinkered around until I got the desired result. I'm no expert and I have no idea if this effects the phone in any other way. I did this over the weekend and everything is working perfectly on my phone. So proceed at your own risk, I don't want to get any pm's about how your phone blew up. I'm just trying to help out here.
1) Be sure to have all your contacts backed up to your Gmail account. Check online before proceeding to step 2.
2) Log into your My Verizon account. Go to the contacts tab, sort by list view and select all contacts. Delete the entire list. There's a deleted contacts tab as well. Select that and delete anything that's in there.
3) Go into your Incredible settings tab, select applications, manage applications. Do not sort or filter, allow list to populate. Select Sync Service, (icon resembles backup assistant icon) select clear data.
4) Also in manage applications scroll down to backup assistant, select clear data. This should do it.
5) To verify backup assistant is now disabled, select settings, accounts and sync, then under manage accounts, select backup assistant. You should be looking at a license agreement screen.
No more backup assistant, no factory reset.

If you're rooted, you can use the free "Titanium Backup" to uninstall Backup Assistant. Be sure to back it up in Titanium backup before uninstalling it. After you uninstall, it will no longer appear at all in Accounts and Sync.

Okay, I've asked this question in several other threads and forums, but never gotten a clear answer:
If I use Titanium to back up my Inc w/ 2.1+rooted+Leaked OTA , can I safely restore all apps, settings (including email account settings, wallpaper, home screens), and appearance once I install the Froyo 2.2 that leaked today?
I've seen some posts that say you should never apply system settings from an old ROM to a new one, but the whole reason I bought Titanium was so that I wouldn't have to re-set up all my home screens, background images, wallpapers, email accounts, etc. If I wanted to just backup/restore apps, there are a million ways to do that. I thought the whole reason Titanium only works on a rooted phone was so that I could restore EVERYTHING.
How can I SAFELY use Titanium to move to the leaked Froyo ROM without losing any of my settings, apps, or appearance?

I had to clear my contact data the other day from settings/applications/manage applications/contacts storage to cure a google mail account sync problem. It worked and the phone now syncs fine. But, I now have duplicates of all facebook events in all my calendars. Can I safely delete the data in settings/applications/manage applications/Facebook for HTC Sense? do you think if I did that that it would sort the problem? Would this cause issues with my contacts, as some are linked to Facebook friends, or would this sort its self out when it re-synced?

I have an LG Ally and all my contacts are pretty much loaded on my gmail account, but i have backup assistant installed because the VZ guy added it to get all my contacts from my Env2 onto my new android phone.
My question is how do i get all of my contacts that are now synced with gmail BACK to backup assistant? it's sounds kind of silly but i want to make sure that all my contacts will be there for me in case i have to go back to my Env2 or another phone that does not support google sync.

Once upon a time I accidently thought backup assistant would be useful and set it up. Now ever since setting it up it runs in the background like an annoying pest. I have cleared the cache as online recommendations have mentioned, but Backup Assistant STILL runs in the background and restarts if forced to quit.I'm now rooted and have the Clockwork recovery mod on my phone....what can I do now to permenantly banish "Backup Assistant" from running? I've heard of people deleting it but then having problems with syncing FCing. So I'm just looking to slam the door in its face.
