General :: Access Windows Shared Folders In Android
Mar 6, 2012
I've been searching for an app or a way to be able to access the shared folders of my desktop PC in my android mobile (Huawei U8650 not rooted) and my tablet (Acer A100 also not rooted).
I want to be able to watch my movies in the shared folders or read my ebooks like I do from my laptop. The PC is connected with a wifi rooter as all the rest devices. Since the laptops can access the shared files, I guess my android devices should also be able to do it... but how...?

Just got my Droid 2.
Trying to access shared folders on my home network (3 computers running XP) via the Media Share.
Set up the files for sharing on the computers.
On my Droid clicked on "Media Share" -> "Start" -> "Computer" -> "Copy" -> "Windows File Sharing" -> "Next" -> Shared 3 folders on my computer. -> "Next" -> Verified my home network was availabe, clicked "Next" -> clicked "Next" -> "Shared Folders" -> "Add Server" -> "Scan for Servers" ->
At this point it finds the IP address of the laptop Im working on. using DHCP. But when I click on it, it keeps asking for a user name and password. dont have one for XP and no password on the files.

I usually view email with attachments from my pc because I usually lack the time to download the attachment. Today, I had some spare time so I tried to download an attachment. It downloaded fine but when I went to view it, I received a pop-up box to save it to the sd card. After pressing ok, I was told the save was successful but now I can't find it. Aside from pics and videos, how do I access other folders with saved data?

I know that I am supposed to add application/vnd.android.package- archive mime type in it. However I have to access to this. I have emailed godaddy asking them to add it but I just wanted to see if anyone knows of an alternate method that I could use to allow my users to download this from my site.

Im looking for an app which would show some popup window containing apps/folders which I've selected.
The idea is that I could quickly access my most-used apps, and maybe folders, without flicking through many home screens.
Im using the stock A2.1 launcher (on SE x10mp).

I'd like an app that lets you access a windows file share, and lets you stream music from that location. Is there a way to do this on Android?

Is it possible to have a TCP/IP access to Windows 7 PC from Android device (create a LAN between them) using just direct connection via USB cable, without wifi or bluetooth? I already have it working using wifi, but I am also interested in just USB cable way.
I do _not_ need to use PC's internet connection, I only want to access the PC itself. I want to access HTTP/FTP/SSH servers on the PC and its samba (Windows Network) shares via Android CifsManager app.
Is this possible using "reverse tethering" solution which is used to access PC's internet connectivity on Android device and uses some 3rd party app? Is there a simpler solution without using 3rd party apps? Is this possible somehow via adb?
My Android device uses Android 4.0.3 and is rooted. My Windows version is Windows 7 64-bit.

Now I have 2 activities that would simultaneously access one data/ settings. However, two kind of solution can be applied after I study from the Android Developer's Guild. One is ContentProvider, The discription in guild is as: "Content providers store and retrieve data and make it accessible to all applications. They're the only way to share data across applications; there's no common storage area that all Android packages can access."and another is SharedPreferences, "To use preferences that are shared across multiple application components (activities, receivers, services, providers), you can use the underlying Context.getSharedPreferences() method to retrieve a preferences object stored under a specific name."

I know that we can safely write to /data/data/app_package... however, can the application also create folders and maybe access other folders as well, such as system? I could easily create an application to test that, but what i really want to know if the official Android approach to this issue. I don't want to assume something that will be changed in the future.

I am programming a game and I have MANY MANY images. Is there a way how I can sort them in folders and access them in my program? For example: res/drawable/gameboard/image*.png res/drawable/animals/image*.png res/drawable/character/image*.png
Or do I HAVE to put all of them directly in res/drawable/* to be able to use them in my program?

copy local_filename \192.168.2.xc$foreign_folder
This DOS script copy a local file on a remote hard disk.

I have a rooted Fascinate. Using ES file explorer I was able to view system folders and found the system media files containing ringtones, notification tone, etc. However, I can not edit the files there or paste new files in there. I cannot find the system folder when I connect the fascinate to a computer. I tried showing "hidden files" but the folders still would not show up.
What I want to do is add my downloaded ringtones into the system media folder so that I can use those ringtones without having those ringtones appear in my music player. Another post tried to deal with this issue of the music player recognizing ringtones and notification tones, but no one could provide an actual solution to the problem. If I could move ringtones from the media folder on the SD to card to the media folder in the system folder, this would solve the problem.
Can anybody access the system folders in a manner that I can add files to the folders.
EDITED: PROBLEM SOLVED.
With the help given below, I came up with a solution, and have pasted instructions directly below.
Here are the steps I did in case any one else is interested.
Once your phone is rooted, it's pretty simple.
1)Download Root Explorer from the Market. Root explorer will give you the ability to edit folders/files that normally can't be edited, ie read and write permission as opposed to read only.
2)Using Root Explorer (make sure in top left of program it says "mounted as r/w"), copy any ringtone, notification file, .ogg file, .mp3 file, etc that you have made or downloaded, by selecting sdcard folder and navigating to the location of your tones, long pressing the file of interest, and select copy. (You can even long press on the folder and copy the whole folder of tones).
3)Still using Root Explorer, back out of the SD folder, and find the folder called "system". Navigate to system/media/audio/"ringtones" or "notifications" . Click the paste button at the bottom of the screen (which should have appeared as soon as you copied your file/folder). The file/folder will now be in your system's tone folder.
4)You must power down and power back up your phone before the phone will recognize these newly added tones.
5)Either delete the tone files from your SD card, or put a .nomedia file into the folder to remove them from the SF's media player.

Every time I share a picture via twitter, g+, Facebook, or mms, or even upload it to a message board, the orientation defaults to landscape regardless if its taken in portrait mode. This is pretty annoying. It also happens when I try to edit my avatar using the xda app.
How can I fix this so that a picture is uploaded in the orientation that the picture is taken in?

I cant connect nor find my samba network drive from Android whatsover... I have tried using different apps (ES File Explorer, AndroXplorer and AndSMB), but none of them are able to connect nor to find my shared folders....
On the android client side, I am using anonymous login and I have tried using both the ip address of the samba server in the hostname field and the hostname itself. I also tried with the domain set or empty. I have a Galaxy Nexus with Android 4.2.1
On the server side, I have the following configuration ( add V0BRW3vK to pastebin address -> I cant post links) and I can access it through windows, ubuntu and even through my playstation =D But not with my android device... Therefore, I dont think it is a server issue (unless if Android connects in a different way).
It is also perhaps worth mentioning that my samba server has a static IP and it is not on the DHCP list of the router. However, Im not sure if this should influence something as I'm even trying to access it directly through its IP.
Is there something I need to do in the android device beforehand in order to connect to the network drive? Any hints of what could be going wrong? Most of the issues, I read about it seem to handled in my config and have been discarded due to the fact that I can connect to the shared folder with other devices. The only other thing that comes to my mind now is to either find an open source application that connects to a samba shared folder and run it with logging.

A Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 is connect to a shared network drive located on the network it's connected to (eg \sharefoldersharesofficeshares) I open a file from the shared folder, like a word or excel document, and make some changes. Here comes the challenge: When I save the file, it does not save back to the shared folder but only locally on the tablet. That means that if I go to a computer on the same network, connected to the folder and open the file I just edited on the tablet; No changes has been made
The problem is that I have yet to find a android word/excel processor that has the option to save on a network drive.
The only solution without an app with the option stated above is to somehow syncronize the android folder where the edited file is saved. Unfortunately that requires some actions that I would not like to teach the non-IT personal who uses the tablet.

We also shared our calendars with each other and can view them online. However, we cannot see each other's calendar on the GS3. Is there a setting or something that we are missing?

Got an Android phone (HTC Desire 2 years old) but now I have splashed out on a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1.
Now on my home computer I have a shared folder with all our digital photos. what I want to do is access these photos on the Note and view them as a slideshow. A second computer (with Picasa) can access these pictures over the home network and run a slideshow. I want something similar on the Note - is this possible? I know i can access network drives with, for example, ES File Explorer, but how can I view the photos in a folder (and subfolders) as a slideshow?
