Android :: Size A View Based On Its Parent's Dimensions?
Jan 29, 2010
How can I size a view based on the size of its parent layout. For example I have a relativelayout that fills the full screen, and I want a child view, say an imageview, to take up the whole height, and 1/2 the width? I've tried overriding all on onMeasu onLayout onSizeChanged etc and I couldn't get it working....

I have a compound UI component built up from a ViewGroup containing a number of TextView, ImageView etc. components. Many of these have StateListDrawables as their images/backgrounds. Is there any way of making them select from this drawable based on the state of the parent ViewGroup rather than the component itself? Ideally I want to be able to change the visual state of all children of the ViewGroup (text colour, image etc) based on the state of the ViewGroup, preferably without having to hook up complex logical code. This seems like a fairly common sort of requirement, so I was hoping it would be straightforward in Android - am I going to be disappointed?

I want to build my own custom view which should look like the Crysis-GUI.At first I designed a XML-based Layout and made it visible via the setContentView(int resid)-Method. Worked pretty well.But now I wan't to go a step further and draw in my Layout. So I created a new Class, let it extend View and overrode the onDraw()-Method. So far so good.But how can I still use my XML-Layout? I can't do setContentView anymore, so how could the same effect be achieved?

So I'm loading images from a web service, but the size of the images are sometimes smaller or bigger than other images and the visualization looks silly when I put them in a ListView in android. I'd like to fix the size of my ImageView so that it only shows a portion of the image if it's larger than a preset amount. I've tried everything I can think of setting the setMaxWidth/setMaxHeight, setting the scale type to centerCrop, using ClipableDrawable wrapping my BitmapDrawable, setting using Drawable.setBounds(). I've tried setting in the XML and programmatically, but neither worked. I'm very surprised setting max width/height didn't do anything. Below is the XML I'm using ImageView definition in my layout file

I want to do some cleanup in a view when the activity is being destroyed. Is there any way to get a callback in the View when the activity is being destroyed? I tried using onDetachedFromWindow, but I'm not sure whether it is correct thing to do.

In one of my Activities I have a ListView that displays a list of locations. For each list item I want a little arrow icon that points in the direction of the corresponding location. I implemented this icon by extending ImageView. This custom View has a listener that reacts to changes of the device's orientation by rotating the icon image accordingly. I register the listener in the onAttachedToWindow() method and unregister it in onDetachedFromWindow(). This kind of works but the problem is that onDetachedFromWindow() sometimes gets called only a long time after the containing Activity has paused. Also, the whole layout overall seems a little hacky. So my question is: Is there a proper way to unregister the listeners or would you implement this in a completely different way to begin with?

I have a custom Android view which overrides onTouchEvent(MotionEvent) to handle horizontal scrolling of content within the view. However, when the ScrollView in which this is contained scrolls vertically, the custom view stops receiving touch events. Ideally what I want is for the custom view to continue receiving events so it can handle its own horizontal scrolling, while the containing view hierarchy deals with vertical scrolling.
Is there any way to continue receiving those motion events on scroll? If not, is there any other way to get the touch events I need?

I think this is a pretty simple question but I'm having trouble finding the answer out there.I'm developing an android application (currently developing against v1.5 API) and one of the activities use a ListView. I want to be able to set the properties of each List Item based on the state of an in memory object rather than the state of the view or list item.Here is a simple example....say I have a Person class who's public members are defined as follows. I have a GridView, using a custom adapter (myAdapter extends BaseAdapter), where each item in the grid holds an ImageButton. getView() is working fine.
However, from elsewhere in my code, how can I update the image (setImageResource) for one particular item in the grid based on its position in the GridView?
So far, I've added this to my adapter class:
CODE:........
And would like to write something like this: mygridview.getItemIdAtPosition(20).changeImage(); (doesn't compile).

Should I create a Listener within a BaseAdapter or should I pass it in? I have 4 classes that inherit from a base class. I pass the Adapter a list objects.
The Adapter is eventually used with a ListActivity I want to create a View based on the derived class and I want them to launch an Activity based on the type of a View. Currently I create the intent and Listener in the BaseAdapter. Is what I'm doing a good pratice?

Is the view aware of the orientation change in order to return updated size after a change in orientation? I'm handling the orientation myself (android:configChanges="orientation|keyboardHidden"). Does it means that I have to take into account the orientation state when querying for view.getHeight()? The view returns the same value as before the orientation change. It this the normal behavior or I should "notify" somehow the view to "refresh" its size.

I currently have a view in my Android app and the view is playing a frame animation. I want to animate the view to increase its size to 150%. When I apply a scale animation to it, and the scale animation is completed, I want the view to stay at that new size for the rest of the activities life cycle. Unfortunately right now when the scale up animation is complete, the view snaps back to the original size. How can I get it to keep the new animated tranformation? I'm using myView.startAnimation(AnimationUtils.loadAnimation(mContext,R.anim.scaleUp150));
