Android :: Filtering Items In View Based On Value Selected In Spinner
Sep 29, 2009
I am trying to change the items in a list view based on a value that gets selected in a spinner that is in the same activity. Is there a quick way to do filtering on the list adapter data based on that value, or should I go the long way of changing my adapter implementation for easy filtering?

I have a spinner 'aperture' set up with a list of numbers, and a spinner 'mode' with two options. When a button is pushed I need a calculation to run using various inputs, including the current selection from 'aperture' and a value derived from 'mode'. How do I call the value of a spinner so I can use it in a calculation?
Also, how do I use the spinner 'mode's selection to set this other value before implimenting it in the calculation? To be more specific, if the spinner is set to Small then the value I use in the calculation is 0.015, whereas if Large is selected I need to use 0.028
My other inputs are EditText views, so right now I am set up like this:
CODE:............
That is not the actual equation, it is just a test to make sure everything connects properly. How would I call the value of spinner 'aperture' and the Small/Large spinner 'mode'

My application has a ListView displaying some items that are associated with different documents:
CODE:..........
The ListView implements an OnItemLongClickListener and displays the available document types as follows:
CODE:...............
I would like to modify onPrepareDialog to filter the dialog to display only the document types relevant for the long clicked item (like a context menu except that some long clicks will perform a different task: expand or collapse the hierarchy displayed in the custom ListView). For example, if an item is long clicked that is associated with only document types A and B, I would like the dialog to avoid displaying document types C and D as dialog items? However, looking at R.java, it is not clear to me what the id of an individual item in the select_doc_dialog_items array would be.
How to use onPrepareDialog() to filter displayed dialog items?

I have an Android ListView, backed by an ArrayAdapter. When the user clicks on an item in the list, that item is removed. This all appears to work fine, you can click on each item until there are no items left.
However, it all goes wrong once text filtering occurs. Once the list has been filtered once, even if that filter is cleared, all subsequent calls to remove(Object) on the adapter fail to remove the item from the visible list. I've tried calling ListView.clearTextFilter() before removing the item, calling it after removing the item, and not calling it all. There's no difference.
I've looked through the source for ArrayAdapter.java and it seems that once filtering is set, the adapter uses one collection to respond to queries but updates a different one. I can see no obvious way to get it to revert its behaviour. Is this a bug or am I missing something?

I am a newbie coder and new to the SDK. I was just playing around with an app that i made. I wanted to know as to how to retrieve the item id of the selected item from the spinner when the spinner is re- populated.
For example, I created 2 spinners, if you selected item 0 from spinner1 then spinner2 will have a bunch of items and if you selected item 1 from spinner1 then spinner2 will have a different set of items. Now, my question is that when i select item 1 from spinner 1 then the items in spinner2 dont have different ids. So how do i differentiate from the two sets of data?
To illustrate,
User selected item 0 in spinner1 -> spinner2 gets data from array1 -> item 0 in spinner2 has id '0' and item text is "apple"
User selected item 1 in spinner1 -> spinner2 gets data from array2 -> item 0 in spinner2 has id '0' and item text is "oranges"
I know this sounds confusing but i hope the right people understood it..

I want to obtain the index of the selected item in a spinner.
I am aware of the method getSelectedItem() which returns the item selected (which might be a String). But i want the index of the selected item.
Something equivalent to the setSelection(index) to set the selected item.
Of course I can get the selected item and compare it against the array of items to obtain the index, but I hope there is a better way of doing this.

I'm trying to get the selected items string out of a spinner. So far I've got this:
bundle.putString(ListDbAdapter.DB_PRI, v.getText().toString());
This doesn't work and gives a casting exception (I thought you could cast a view to a widget that inherits it... obviously not!). So how do you get the selected value of a spinner

I have a update view, where I need to preselect the value stored in database for a Spinner.
I was having in mind something like this, but the Adapter has no indexOf method, so I am stuck .
void setSpinner(String value)
{
int pos=getSpinnerField().getAdapter().indexOf(value);
getSpinnerField().setSelection(pos);}

I am trying to get the selected item of my spinner that is populated and I am already seeing the values. when I try to use (String) s.getSelectedItem(); to get the selected item, I am receiving a handler exception on Logcat.
The spinner throwing the error is a 2nd spinner resulting from the 1st spinner's selected item (that works perfectly). In other words, user selects from spinner one and upon selection, populates spinner 2 (until here everything is fine). When trying to get the value of the selected row in spinner2 , I am receiving the error.
here's the main parts of my code...

Newbie question. I'm using a SimleCursorAdapter to populate a spinner from an SQLite table, as shown in the Android dev docs. Code...
I've set up a listener, but I can't figure out how to get the selected item text, it pulls up the SQLiteCursor, not the actual text in the spinner.Code...
Google turns up the question on several message boards, but no answers, so it appears to be a common newbie question. It may be painfully obvious to some.

I am to display the list and store the selected items in an array. But I am not able to get the correct items that were selected. Here whenever the user clicks an item, the array is getting updated, irrespective if the user is clicking the item to select it or deselect it. Could some one please help me solve this. I could actually perform an iteration to remove the odd numbered items in the array but I feel that would become an overload on the phone. Is there something for efficient. Please advise.
public class MainActivity extends ListActivity { TextView selection; String[] items={"sodium", "O2", "C02", "HCL", "NaCl", "H2So4", "O3", "Ag"}; String names[] = new String[10]; static int i=0; int posarray[] = new int[10]; @Override public void onCreate(Bundle icicle) { super.onCreate(icicle); setContentView(R.layout.main); setListAdapter(new ArrayAdapter<String>(this, android.R.layout.simple_list_item_multiple_choice, items)); .........

I am trying to change the text color of the spinner list items individually. I would like to be able to color the top three texts black and then the bottom four grey. This way the last items look disabled, but I still want to be able to capture the event when they are chosen. I haven't been able to find any documentation on how to do that. Alternatively I would like to disable som list items, but still be able to capture the event when they are chosen.

I have an android spinner that's populated by a list of strings using an ArrayAdapter and it operates fine, however because of the way the spinner is displayed I'm running into a display height problem with the list items.
At first glance it would seem that the ArrayAdapter can use a single layout for displaying options which leads to the problem I'm having. When displaying the current item in the spinner (when the user is not selecting a new item from the list) the spinner pads the text so that the spinner is a reasonable size for clicking on. However when the user taps on it and brings up the list to select a new item, the list items presented are way to small height-wise. If I use an item layout that presents the list items at a reasonable height, then the spinner itself becomes exorbitantly huge due to it's own padding of the list item.
Any ideas on how I can manage the height of these two item display modes so that effectively they display with the same height value instead of the spinner height being larger than the list item display height?

I have a selection for some items using a spinner widget. At the moment the spinner will load a simple Textview and show the name of the item.It is possible to define an own view to show inside the spinner row? I would suspect it being similar to a custom List row.I simply want to show an individual icon left from the spinner text for each item in the list.

I want to build my own custom view which should look like the Crysis-GUI.At first I designed a XML-based Layout and made it visible via the setContentView(int resid)-Method. Worked pretty well.But now I wan't to go a step further and draw in my Layout. So I created a new Class, let it extend View and overrode the onDraw()-Method. So far so good.But how can I still use my XML-Layout? I can't do setContentView anymore, so how could the same effect be achieved?
